The Genetic Counselor Assistant will work collaboratively to support functions of the Genetics team across the organization. The GCA will work as a team member with other practice staff and consistently project a professional and courteous demeanor. Major Responsibilities:

1. Draw and update patient pedigrees using Progeny pedigree drawing software and patient history forms and EPIC.

2. Maintain database/track patients who require authorization for genetic testing and communicate approvals to patients.

3. Maintain database/track pending results for genetic testing and communicate finding with Genetic Counselors.

4. Contact labs about tests out of turnaround time or to respond to inquiries about corrections to test requisitions.

5. Ensure that patient charts are prepared for clinic and obtain insurance approval for necessary laboratory studies.

6. Assist genetic counselors with administrative tasks such as sending faxes, making copies, writing letters of medical necessity, preparing test requisitions, working on mailings and completing any additional paperwork, etc.

7. Process calls and requests from patients and outside facilities.

8. Call to obtain results or additional records from various hospital departments, outside laboratories, and/or physician offices prior to the appointment or as requested for emergent inpatient consults.

9. Perform literature reviews under the guidance of the Genetic Counselor.

10. Create patient-centered handouts.  
12. Communicate negative/reassuring patient results if/when appropriate.
13. Help coordinate blood draws at outside facilities.
14. Contact patients ahead of sessions to request they send or bring in copies of familial test reports.

15. Perform other job-related responsibilities as requested, including other patient preparation and follow-up tasks.

Performs support functions to the eye practices of the department including pre-testing for appointments and various diagnostic tests.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Perform preliminary testing procedures to include measurement and verification of visual acuity and checking intra-ocular pressures. Interview patient to develop statement of visual history.

2. Responsible for administering Humphrey visual field diagnostic procedures as well as OCT analysis of optic nerve and retina. Other testing may include pentacam, pachymetery, and specular microscope.

3. Coordinate the scheduling of various surgical procedures and preparation of pre-op paperwork. Perform equipment maintenance and minor repairs. May also include outreach travel.

4. Interact with patients, pharmacies, and optical dispensaries in the release and communication of prescriptions and give appropriate advice regarding eye symptoms and problems.

5. Certain other responsibilities may include managing and ordering supplies and inventories in department, contact lens order processing, and instruction in insertion, removal, and handling of contact lenses.

6. May assist in minor surgical procedures including cleaning and sterilization of surgical equipment and instruments as well as assisting the surgeon in the procedure. Could also counsel pre- and post-opeative eye surgery patients regarding eye care instructions and medication use.

7. Support to refractive surgery program could include informing patients of preoperative and postoperative instructions, set up and clean equipment, and calculate postoperative refractive surgery results.

8. Witness waste of controlled substances with authorized staff in the state of Wisconsin. Will not witness waste in Minnesota and Iowa, both states require licensed individuals or registered pharmacy technician staff only to witness the waste of controlled substances.

9. Performs other job-related responsibilities as needed to ensure successful operation of department/vision center.

Job Description:

The Pathologists' Assistant performs gross description and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens, including selection and submission of sections for histological, microbiological, immunological and other specialized testing.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Performs complete dissection at the gross level for all types of surgical pathology specimens, with accurate and appropriate description of findings dictated for surgical pathology report.

2. Recognizes pathology at the gross level and appropriately, selects and submits tissue specimens for routine microscopic exam in a timely, accurate and efficient manner.

3. Selects and submits appropriate tissue specimens for other special procedures, including frozen section examination, touch preparations, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, cytogenetics and microbiology.

4. Photographs gross pathology specimens, both as directed by the pathologist or other physician, and also in self-directed manner. Recognizes the medicolegal and educational value of photographing certain specimens.

5. Photographs microscopic sections as directed by the pathologist or another physician.

6. Utilizes multiple information systems to obtain and summarize patients' pathology records, cytology reports, laboratory test results, radiology reports and clinical histories.

7. Collects, reviews and summarizes data for departmental quality assurance efforts, including but not limited to the following topics: completeness of surgical pathology and autopsy reports; accuracy of SNOMED and CPT coding; correlation of frozen section with permanent section diagnoses; and correlation of outside diagnoses with inhouse diagnoses.

8. Maintains, with timely revisions, the anatomic pathologic quality assurance and procedure manuals.

9. Serves as an educator; teaches residents and students rotating through pathology, presents autopsies at the monthly clinical pathology conference and allowing job shadowing as time permits.

10. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

Education and Learning:

REQUIRED

Bachelor's degree in a related field A copy of the applicant's/employee's diploma and/or transcript as confirmation of the education requirement must be provided at time of hire.
