About you:

We are seeking a skilled research associate in public involvement and/or engagement who ideally also has experience of working with underserved communities. The university has a strong track record in developing innovative and effective public involvement and engagement. Working with public contributors you will support the College’s research and knowledge exchange ambitions by helping to deliver impactful outcomes. Key activities will include:

Building capacity and expertise in public involvement/engagement in research across the College
Identifying pre-grant funding to support early engagement activities
Working collaboratively with public contributors to ensure strong public involvement in research across the College, potentially leading on work packages for specific projects
Working with and building upon existing networks (internal and external) to foster future collaboration opportunities and improve inclusivity
Streamlining internal processes and procedures that recognise and value meaningful public involvement where contributors are rewarded for their time commitments where desired.

About the vacancy:

Highly motivated candidates are invited to apply for a four-year post-doctoral position to conduct research on a BBSRC-funded project entitled “Bac-chat: Bacterial density-dependent quorum sensing mechanisms in Acute Oak Decline symptom development”. This is an exciting opportunity to identify the chemical signalling molecules responsible for communication and interaction between AOD bacteria, to determine how they influence lesion development, and if they play a role in the potential shift from an endophytic to pathogenic lifestyle. The successful candidate will join an expanding research group dedicated to tree health, and also assist in the daily running of the lab and supervision of current and new PhD students.

About you:

Applicants will have a PhD in molecular microbiology or related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in research methods and techniques to fulfil the project objectives. Previous experience of either bacterial transformation and mutagenesis, confocal microscopy, next generation sequencing and data analysis is desirable. The successful candidate should have an excellent track record commensurate with their career stage, ideally including contributions to published work.

To participate in internal and external training as required
To be the line manager for the Science Technicians
