The postholder willprovideday to day support of on-going clinical trials and other studies. Their overall supervision will be directed byProf Burns, but on a day-to-daybasis they will work primarily withHIV and Vaccine clinical trial research teams. The postholder will be central to the effective running of the wider group. An exact breakdown of percentage time spent in different duties is impossible togiventhe fluctuating nature of clinic visits for clinicalresearchhowever it isanticipatedthat the successful applicant will undertake 3-4 clinical trial clinics per week seeing patientsparticipatingin clinical trials as per trial protocol.Outside of these responsibilities it is expected that the post-holder will develop their own clinical research project as well asparticipateinundergraduate and postgraduate teaching. If they do not already hold a higherdegreethen creating pilot data/fellowship applicationto register for a PHD would beencouraged.Theclinical research project(s)should be withinHIV/infectious diseases/STIs and related conditionsand will beunder the guidance and supervision of senior academic staff.

Main duties and responsibilities:
• Day to day support of on-going clinical trials and other studies.
• Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
• Development of own clinical research projects.
• Under Consultant supervision, to be responsible for the clinical care of patients attending the HIV/ID service including those participating in the clinical trials liaising with colleagues to ensure they receive the best standard of clinical care.
• Participation in HIV/ID on call rota (optional & subject to experience).

The HIV service provided by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is recognised as an international Centre of Excellence for HIV care. It serves the inpatient and outpatient needs of over 3000 people with HIV and has the largest cohort of women with HIV in the country. It has an inpatient HIV unit and runs specialist consultant-led clinics within the department including in viral hepatitis, TB, cardiology, renal disease, rheumatology, ageing and frailty, chronic fatigue, lipid disorders, AIN,gynaecologyand psychiatry. For stable patients on medication e-clinics are in place, which are both Doctor and Nurse led. Care in all areas of medicine is increasingly being provided at a network level and the department is active in developing and strengthening links with our clinical colleagues across the North Central London Network. The HIV department has a dedicated researchteamand many patients are involved inclinicaltrials including those for new antivirals, primary HIV infections andquestionnaire basedstudies.

More recently, the Royal Free hasestablisheda dedicated vaccine trial research team. This team successfully delivered on large scale Covid vaccine trials during the pandemic. The vaccine trials team have morelarge-scalevaccine trials (Phase 1 through to 3) about to open and others on the horizon. The post-holder will help support delivery and oversight of these trials.

We are excited to offer this combined research and clinical post with a focus on delivering research within our 50 bed Critical Care Service. Our service provides care for critically unwell patients in in the setting of our large London teaching hospital. Royal Free London is a tertiary referral centre for liver failure, liver transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, vascular surgery, nephrology, renal transplantation, infectious diseases and complex abdominal surgery.

We would welcome candidates from a wide variety of clinical backgrounds including Medicine, Hepatology, Anaesthesia, and Emergency medicine. Airway skills are not specifically required and therefore these posts would be ideal for any candidate wishing to extend their experience in critical care medicine. This post would be well suited to a senior trainee who is taking time out of programme from higher specialist training in order to focus on research and prepare for applications for higher degrees. You will be well supported by our dedicated team of Critical Care Consultants, and we will help you develop mentorship and support from colleagues in our academic partner UCL.

The Royal Free Hospital Critical Care Service is recognised for training at all levels of intensive care medicine. Educational supervision is provided and attendance at ICU teaching programme is expected. The duration of this post will be 12 months.

The Royal Free Hospital has a total complement of 42 Intensive Care beds (mixed level 2 and level 3) an 8 bedded post anaesthesia care unit (PACU). All medical and surgical specialties, with exception of neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery and ECMO are covered. The Renal unit at the Royal Free provides services for the whole of the North Central sector. Tertiary specialist services include liver transplantation, hepatobiliary (HPB), plastic and vascular surgery. With the recent expansion and amalgamation of HPB services at the Royal Free Hospital, we are now one of the largest centres in Europe in terms of these surgical procedures.

The total throughput of patients is in excess of 1600 per year. Senior medical cover is provided by 24 Consultants, who provide a 24 hour service.
