In the role of a Science Assistant, you will:

• Conduct analyses and provide reports and related presentations of information on the Division's (or Office's) scientific programs.
• Provide scientific input to relevant aspects of the merit review process, including developing solicitations; reading proposals for responsiveness to the solicitation and preliminary grouping of proposals.
• Attend panel meetings and provide feedback on completeness of panel summaries and/or minutes of the scientific discussion.
• Provide assistance to program officers and division management in overseeing scientific progress on awards, including working with principal investigators and program officers to collect high quality, scientifically accurate highlights and results.
• Develop data and report on scientific portfolios for Committees of Visitors and other results-oriented activities.
• Provide assistance to Division (or Office) management in enhancing interactions with the scientific community, including interactions with Advisory Committees.
• Participate in outreach meetings, including activities with schools and interacts with relevant elements of the National Academies.

The Student Trainee Business Operations Assistant is responsible for performing various administrative support duties in their assigned organization. They may provide administrative support related to NSF's efforts to promote and fund awards through grants, cooperative agreements, and other mechanisms, or may support technical and business operations throughout NSF. Student interns will perform a combination of the following:

Administrative/Office Support

• Receives, controls, and tracks all incoming mail, correspondence, documents, congressional and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and action items.
• Creates, maintains, and promptly distributes important documents and records to appropriate staff, including the assigned organization's telephone list, Staff Conflict of Interest (COI) list, and Emergency Contact list.
• Receives visitors and screens telephone calls for the assigned organization.
• Maintains the assigned organization's calendar, assisting management staff in tracking important activities, such as panels, committee of visitors (COVs), site visits, and staff absences.
• Assists in planning and coordinating meetings by notifying participants, reserving space, sending agendas, preparing materials, assisting management officials in preparing for meetings and presentations, providing support during meetings, taking minutes, and following up as needed.
• Establishes, organizes, and maintains office files for the assigned organization.
• Assists with preparing purchase orders and requisitions for office equipment, furniture, and printing/copying supplies for the assigned organization.
• Serves as the assigned organization's primary timekeeper by maintaining accurate, up-to-date time and attendance records for all staff.

• Assists with processing non-award actions or recommended awards and providing general administrative support for assigned programs.
• Arranges logistics for in-person panels including negotiating hotel rates, reserving room blocks, and ensuring reviewers have the required materials, such as proposals and background information.
• Provides authoritative information to Principal Investigators (PIs) on proposal submission requirements and coordinates with PIs to obtain necessary information for incomplete proposals.
• Handles PI inquiries about their request status. Refers only the most controversial, sensitive, or substantive scientific issues to other staff members, as necessary.
• Enters budget and award data into the appropriate system for funded proposals.

• Develop, instruct, and assess courses at the undergraduate level.
• Teach a full load for research-active faculty (~12 contact hours/week during the semester), including Introduction to GIS, Remote Sensing, Raster GIS, and GIS Programming courses.
• Maintain currency in their field through professional development, conference attendance, and engagement in scholarly activities.
• Support student success in courses and in their pursuit of the GIS certificate.
• Submit timely feedback to students and upload grades by required deadlines.
• Participate in Geosciences Department faculty meetings.
• Participate in program assessment, curriculum planning for the GIS program, and outreach to prospective students and professional GIS organizations.
• Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
• Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility, including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
• Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Specialized Skills, and Experience:

• PhD in Geography, Geosciences, Environmental Science, or related field (ABD will be considered)
• Ability to teach Introductory through advanced GIS, including a remote sensing course
• Mastery of ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro software environment
• Minimum of 4 years of experience using and/or teaching GIS
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills, and Experience:

• Experience and/or interest in remote sensing applied to snow science and/or climate change
• 4+ years of experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro, as well as open-source GIS platforms (e.g. qGIS)
• Proficiency in Python programming and/or Google Earth Engine
• GISP certification
• Active engagement with the broader GIS community (industry, federal government, etc)
