A vacancy has arisen for a Band 5 nurse to join an established team in supporting clinical research in Critical Care and Emergency Medicine based at University Hospital, Coventry. Applications are welcomed from individuals with recent experience in an acute care setting who can demonstrate the knowledge and skills that would enable them to succeed in this post. Research nurses need to be empathetic and adept at establishing rapport with patients, their families and members of the multi-disciplinary teams involved in their care. Other key characteristics that help to make a good research nurse include resourcefulness, flexibility, and the willingness to adapt to the needs of the moment.
The ideal candidate will be dedicated to improving patient care, eager to learn, have an eye for detail and be able to demonstrate excellent documentation, organisational and time management skills. The post holder will work in conjunction with other team members to ensure that all research is conducted to the highest standards, safeguarding the wellbeing of the participants, in accordance with all current legislative, ethical and governance principles and policies.
While experience in clinical research and/or one of the specialties mentioned above would be desirable, all relevant training will be provided.
This post offers the potential for the successful candidate to progress to a Band 6 research sister/charge nurse position within 12 to 18 months. Please note that progression is dependent on achieving the following criteria: completion of all relevant training, sign off for all the core R&D competencies, ability to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge in practice and a satisfactory appraisal. If the criteria have not been met by month 18 there will be no automatic upgrade and progression to a band 6 post would be in the usual way (by application and interview), when an opportunity arises.
Typical activities in this role include being actively involved in the recruitment of patients to a range of research studies (e.g., obtaining consent, collecting data and biological samples), managing a study caseload and liaising with academic and commercial sponsor organisations, both national and international.
New starters undergo an induction programme and relevant training to help them complete their research competency package. During this time they have opportunities to observe and practice the varied aspects of the research nurse role and, when ready, will take the lead on a small number of simple studies while working with other team members on those which are more complex.
Please note that this is a full-time post worked over 5 days (Monday to Friday), usually from 08:00-16:00 with the need to be flexible if required.

Ensure care to patients is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures and the research protocol
Assist in the day to day care and monitoring of patients participating in complex treatment studies.
Attend Multi-disciplinary Meetings, and appropriate clinics, to assess volunteers/patients for eligibility for research and recruit new patients, to act as a resource to the members of the MDT. Communicate information regarding clinical decisions to patients, carers and the MDT as required.
Ensure that trial specific investigations are undertaken as required by the research protocol in order to establish eligibility and safety to enter the trial.
Following relevant training and assessment perform investigations/procedures including but not restricted to electrocardiograms, venepuncture, blood pressures, height, weight, urinalysis, faecal sampling, in accordance with the study protocol and local standards operating procedures
