Research Assistant on NIHR funded HARP Aphasia study
The post holder will work as a member of the HARP Aphasia research team led by Dr Anna Caute. The full title of the project is “Harnessing portable smart-camera technology to support the communication skills of people with aphasia”. It is funded by an NIHR Research for Patient Benefit grant. The project will explore how existing portable smart-camera technology can be used to enhance the expressive language and reading skills of people with aphasia. The project will start with a scoping review of the literature about the use of portable smart-camera technology in communication disabilities and rehabilitation. Then we will conduct a market survey of commercially available apps suitable for use in healthcare. In the second phase of the project, participatory health approaches will be used to design a novel intervention harnessing portable smart-camera technology. We will conduct a series of focus groups and workshops with people with aphasia and Speech and Language Therapists, and will develop a therapy manual for the novel intervention.
The post-holder will contribute to the scoping review and market survey, working closely with the research team, which comprises Speech and Language Therapists, a researcher who has aphasia and a computer scientist. They will be involved in a range of research activities with research participants which include, but are not limited to; recruitment, conducting face-to-face assessments, facilitating focus groups and workshops, conducting go-along interviews, data collection, data entry, data analysis and updating and securely maintaining participant files. They will contribute to developing the therapy manual and to dissemination activities. The post holder will support the Principal Investigator with the day-to-day operations of the research and contribute to the administrative aspects of the research governance processes.
