Administrative and Supervisory
- Provides first-line coordination and oversight for pharmacist and technician work activities, including staff leave and scheduling, staff work assignments, order verification processes, veteran and non-veteran customer services, and regulatory compliance regarding medication control and security.
- Develops, implements, and manages programs to optimize drug therapy costs, including participation in the development of disease management programs.
- Establishes programs for the appropriate and cost-efficient use of selected drugs (target drugs) that are high cost and subject to misuse. May serve as the approval authority of target drugs.
- Coordinates medication conversions and to comply with local, VISN, and National contracts or approved formulary substitutions. Provides information to patients, providers, and other healthcare personnel regarding the conversion process to promote a safe and efficient transition.
- Develops and conducts medication use evaluations (MUE) in areas of needs from a cost-effective and patient outcome perspective and makes recommendations based on results.
Control Point Management - Incumbent is responsible for daily functions related to fund control management.
- Responsible for processing 1358s, 2237s, and purchase card orders for obligating appropriate funds for pharmacy service budget.
- Acts as a purchase cardholder approving official for the Pharmacy Service and oversees purchases of pharmacy procurement technicians.
- Incumbent complies with all Federal, VA, and local acquisition policies and regulations.
- Responsible for making decisions concerning cost containment related to pharmacy transactions.
Inventory Management - Incumbent is responsible for inventory management of all pharmaceuticals and supplies for the pharmacy service.
- Assures the proper pharmacy storage of all pharmaceuticals and supplies.
- Coordinates the purchase and record keeping of REMS medications.
- Responsible for the annual wall-to-wall inventory preparation.
Education - Serves as a resource and provides information and education to staff, residents, and students in areas of formulary management and approved clinical guidelines to reduce unnecessary and inappropriate use of drugs.
- Educates medical staff regarding formulary management, approved clinical guidelines and the cost-efficient use of drugs. Education is provided through in-services and one-on-one encounters. Where possible, uses before and after data to assess the impact of these educational interventions.
- Provides input and assistance to Pharmacy Administration on issues related to areas of practice and expertise.
General - Actively works to add to the body of knowledge by supporting the research and quality improvement initiatives of pharmacy service, residents, other clinical pharmacy staff, and other practitioners within the facility and/or network.
- Performs other pharmacy related duties as needed to help fulfill our mission and abide by our organization's values.
