The Director of Internal Communications & Digital Media is responsible for leading the company’s strategy for employee communications, brand journalism and proactive social media. A key objective in this is building an understanding, internally and externally, of Duke Energy’s energy transition and progress on key initiatives through compelling storytelling. This position reports to the Managing Director of Enterprise Communications & Digital Media.
Responsibilities
- Lead the team in developing and executing effective internal communications, social media and brand journalism strategies to drive engagement, brand reputation and business outcomes.
- Direct high-impact content and campaigns to reach, inform and engage multiple audiences.
- Effectively execute campaigns, initiatives and projects on time and on budget.
- Drive employee engagement, alignment to company strategy and measure progress.
- Collaborate internally to align content narrative; leverage content across channels.
- Maintain positive relationships within department and with business partners.
- Champion opportunities for innovation, continuous improvement and new approaches.
- Stay informed on company and industry-related issues and develop communications strategies to address these issues.
- Remain apprised of the evolving internal communications and digital media landscape and best practices.
- Serve as part of the company’s emergency and storm response team.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or other related degree
- In addition to bachelor’s degree, ten (10) years minimum of related work experience
- In lieu of bachelor’s degree, high school diploma/GED AND fourteen (14) years minimum of related work experience
Desired Qualifications
- Experience managing internal communications on issues critical to a large company
- Prior experience leading teams, preferably in a corporate environment
- Experience in providing sound communications counsel to executives
- Proficiency in staying informed of current trends in internal communications and digital communications strategies and best practices.
- Proficiency in social media management tools (Sprinklr, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, etc.)
- Excellent written, verbal and visual communications skills
- Experience measuring the effectiveness of communications plans and campaigns
- Experience with crisis communications and/or issues management
- Exceptional problem-solving, organizational and project management skills, with a meticulous attention to detail
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to influence internally
- Storytelling experience across a variety of mediums with a proven track record of delivering business outcomes
- Strong journalistic skills and news judgment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products, such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, as well as SharePoint
- Experience with human resources-related issues and multi-generation workforces
- Experience in the electric utility industry
- Experience with a Fortune 500 company
- Accreditation in Public Relations (APR)
Working Conditions
- M – F, 2 – 3 days per week in office. May be required on-site as needed to lead effectively and for emergency response.
- Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility.
- Occasional travel – 5-15% as needed.
