The HSDU at The Royal Oldham Hospital are looking for a self-motivated and reliable individual to train as a Decontamination Technician.

You will be joining a busy team to undertake decontamination science duties in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.

Full training will be given in line with the departments ISO 13485 Accreditation, to allow you to assist in the safe and efficient delivery of decontamination services. You will receive continuous development and the opportunity to enhance your career within the decontamination field.

You will demonstrate a commitment and interest within the speciality and have proven ability to work within a challenging environment as part of a dedicated team.

You will have strong verbal skills and the ability to communicate with staff at all levels, often being the main contact between the HSDU and service users.

• Work in accordance with the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.
• To plan your own workload with limited supervision.
• The role involves exposure to blood and body fluids.

Due to our continued expansion, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced LCV Technician/Mechanic to join our team. Based in our workshop at our Skelmersdale site, you will play a key role in mechanic services for our fleet clients, sourced from our meticulously dismantled vehicles.

This role is ideal for a highly skilled mechanic who is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently. The successful candidate will ensure the highest standards of workmanship and safety when fitting engines, contributing to the seamless operation of our fleet services.

Responsibilities Include:

• Install engines in fleet vehicles, ensuring precision and adherence to safety standards.
• Perform diagnostic checks and post-installation testing to ensure optimal performance.
• Identify and troubleshoot any issues during the fitting process.
• Collaborate with the Supply Chain and Fleet teams to ensure timely and efficient completion of jobs.
• Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including parts used and time spent on each job.
• Ensure all work complies with legal requirements and company standards.
• Conduct routine maintenance and inspections on vehicles as required.
• Support the team in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
• Communicate effectively with fleet customers to provide updates and ensure their satisfaction.
• Assist in training junior mechanics or apprentices as needed.

What we need from you:

Essential

• Proven experience as a mechanic, with a strong focus on engine fitting and diagnostics.
• Relevant mechanical qualifications (e.g., NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent).
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
• A commitment to maintaining high standards of health and safety.
• Valid UK driving license.

Desirable

• Previous experience working with vehicles.

The post holder will be required to:- To liaise and work with other trades/disciplines including external agencies (contractors), calling them out when required. Work on electrical distribution systems including emergency standby, UPS and generation. Carry out installation, repairs and planned preventative maintenance on the control systems for laundry machinery, steam raising plant, heating systems, motors, pumps, heat recovery, ventilation systems, sterilisers, washer disinfectors, and fire alarms. Carry out statutory inspections and testing on engineering plant and equipment, and complete necessary documentation. Undertake non-complex tasks including fault finding of other trades. Install heavy engineering plant using lifting equipment in compliance with Trust policies. Use own initiative, knowledge and experience when quantifying, and installing specialist electrical services, engineering plant and equipment in accordance with current guidance and legislation. Use specialist software to programme/reprogramme for the control of laundry and similar equipment. Participate in the departments Equipment Release and Permit to Work Systems. Drive Trust vehicles as and when required. The hours of work are 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday. The shifts are 06:00-14:00 hours, 08:00-16:00 and 10:00-18:00 hours. From time to time you will be expected to work overtime to carry out emergency repairs as required by management. The post holder may be expected to partake in the emergency on-call team to ensure emergency repairs are completed outside of normal working hours including repairs within the Hospital. Price and raise requisitions for materials and equipment in accordance with standing financial instructions. Must be able to achieve acceptable standards of workmanship and productivity. Report performance issues relating to specialist electrical / mechanical services, engineering plant equipment to the Laundry Management Team. The post holder will be required to liaise and work with other trades/disciplines including external agencies (contractors). The post holder will be expected to communicate regularly with estates / laundry staff and senior management. It is expected the post holder will be able to communicate technical issues to senior management to ensure any service line disruptions are minimal and managed correctly. The Post holder will be required to at all times to carry Trust communication devices (pagers, DECT phone, handheld device for work provision etc.) to facilitate. The post holder will be able to provide training, technical advice and support to other Trust employees. Analytical and Judgmental Skills Diagnose and repair faults on complex electrical/mechanical services, engineering plant and equipment, deal with new situations as they arise and pass on knowledge to others. The post holder will be required to understand, interpret situations such as diagnose and repair faults on electrical or mechanical services, engineering plant and equipment. Dealing with repairs and judging economical repair and pass on knowledge to others. Interpret detailed engineering drawings and specifications to instruct contractors and advise others of what the solution is as well as using them to determine the issue. Repairs to lifts including emergency evacuation of persons in accordance with Health & Safety requirements if appropriate. Monitor temperatures using handheld data collection device. Be able to using information for such devices diagnose faults, recalibrate and carry out repairs to steam gauges and boiler controls. This information would be used to investigate and assess complex faults. Undertake non-complex tasks including fault finding outside own specialism. The laundry is an active and busy process plant, the post holder must be able to analyse a range of equipment. Planning and Organisational Skills The post holder shall be required to organise and implement a range of tasks such as planned maintenance and repairs which would affect the service. The post holder will be required to plan and co-ordinate the works required with different estates service lines and disciplines, as well as understanding the implication on the linen service. Work overtime to carry out emergency repairs as required by management. Must be able to manage own workload, plan and respond efficiently to the demands of the service. Plan, organise and carry out installation, repairs and planned preventative maintenance on the control systems for laundry machinery, steam raising plant, heating systems, motors, pumps, heat recovery, ventilation systems, and fire alarms. Plan, organise and carry out statutory inspections and testing on specialist electrical services, engineering plant and equipment and complete necessary documentation. Physical Skills Due to the nature of the intricate works on fine systems the post holder must have the ability to diagnose and repair faults on electronic or mechanical equipment by manipulation of tools e.g., soldering iron, fine screw drivers. The post holder must be able to achieve high standards of workmanship and productivity with limited supervision. High levels of attention to detail are required to enable works to be completed promptly and efficiently. The post holder will be required to lift heavy tools and equipment on occasion, with suitable lifting equipment where necessary.
