This position is duty-stationed in Mammoth Hot Springs in the Division of Facility Management and Operations. Primary responsibilities include:

• Install and repair heating and HVAC systems

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Engaged in assisting in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails.
• Assists in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls.
• Removes windfalls, rockslides, surface outcroppings and debris from trails. Builds up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Installs stepping stones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed.
• Safely and effectively, uses hand power tools required for the job and has the ability to maintain these tools properly.

Major Duties

Performs minor carpentry and marine repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches and catches or parts on equipment. Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles. Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote and isolated island in northwestern Lake Superior. With numerous lakes and native wildlife such as moose and wolves, the park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking and more. Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI. The incumbent will be duty stationed on the island and is required to occupy government quarters. Rent will be paid by the incumbent based on OMB Circular 45 guidelines. Isle Royale is 99% federally-designated Wilderness with no roads, few telephones, no cellular coverage, limited amenities and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on incumbent's specific duty station on the island. These positions will perform the full range of supervisory duties for a team of permanent and temporary seasonal recreation fee technicians and clerks which includes:

• Collect appropriate fees at entrance station in accordance with accountability guidelines; determine visitor eligibility for the sale of various park passes. Maintain accountable stock.
• Serve as a front-line uniformed representative of the park. Provide current and accurate information and excellent customer service to visitors concerning the park and surrounding areas.
• Operate equipment (e.g., point of sale systems, electronic cash register, credit card machine, and/or computer) to collect fees and track various forms of payment (e.g., cash, credit cards, checks, etc.).

Duties for the position with Denali National Park and Preserve include but are not limited to the following:

Assists with the collection and compilation of data necessary for implementing the adaptive management component of the 2012 Denali Park Road Vehicle Management Plan (VMP). Duties include:

• Collect data using hand-held Juno GPS units while traveling in a concessioner-operated buses or a government vehicle transiting all or part of the 92-mile Denali Park Road.
• Collect data on wildlife sightings using binoculars and a range finder.
• Collect data on VMP indicators (number and type of vehicles at a wildlife stop and rest stops, amount of time hikers have been waiting to be picked up by a bus).
• Collect vehicle traffic data from monitoring locations.
• Install and maintain traffic counters, download and process data using specialized software.
• Download and process data using MS Excel, MS Access, and ArcMap.
• Perform quality control/quality assurance and follow established protocols.
• Maintain monitoring equipment.
• Follow assigned monitoring schedule.
• Communicate changes in schedule to supervisor or crew lead in a timely manner in writing and orally.
• Interface with concessioner staff and park visitors.
• Conduct Dall sheep surveys.

• Work hours will vary and will include early-mornings and late-evenings, weekends, nights, and holidays. Sheep surveys will involve hiking in wilderness. Close encounters with grizzly bears, moose, and wolves are possible at work and living locations. The incumbent may be required to drive a government vehicle. A uniform will not be required while traveling on buses but will be required when traveling in a government vehicle. Safety training will include living and working in grizzly bear, moose, and wolf habitat and traveling in remote wilderness locations. Incumbent must follow safety protocols and regulations.

• Use fish capture techniques such as seines, hoop nets, and/or gill nets.
• Count salmon from a raised platform or weir.
• Operate small (18 - 23 feet) boats on lakes and/or rivers.
• Use radio telemetry to track fish or wildlife movements.

Some of the duties you will perform include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinate biosecurity inspections schedule and work tasks, and work with contractors and park staff to accomplish biosecurity and weed management project goals
• Conduct routine resource monitoring programs for evaluating nonnative species invasiveness, vegetation communities, population dynamics, ecosystem relationships, and public health/safety issues.
• Carry out a variety of field activities such as the plant surveys, control of non-native and invasive plant or insect species, and enhancement of native plant populations.
• Perform routine and recurring testing of collected samples. Record all data collected and ensure adequate quality control. Make field observations of natural resource conditions.
• Mix, load, and apply herbicides for the purpose of vegetation control.

• IMPORTANT Special Consideration: The island of Hawai'i can be subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gases and particulates. The fumes are known to be hazardous to an unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. Long-term effects on normal healthy persons are unknown.

At the GS-04 level: You serve as a crew member on invasive plant control and ecological restoration projects in the front country or wilderness areas. Duties include:

• Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.
• Identifying vascular plants to species level using dichotomous keys.
• Assisting with leading volunteers.

Positions are being recruited in both Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks including positions in the Lodgepole, Grant Grove and Cedar Grove Subdistricts.

EMTs will be assigned ambulance duty, responding as the initial provider for most EMS calls. EMTs will request assistance from other trained personnel as necessary. The park employs approximately 25 permanent rangers who have certifications ranging from EMT to Paramedic. The parks respond to roughly 350 calls annually ranging from first aid to advanced life support. EMTs respond to roughly ten fatal incidents each year. EMTs will conduct appropriate patient assessment, make a transport decision, and work within established NPS Protocols under medical control. EMTs will make base hospital contact via phone and radio patch. Patient care will be documented appropriately in the field to allow for electronic reporting after the call. EMTs will keep supplies stocked and notify their supervisor when supplies need to be ordered. Ambulances will be cleaned and organized for effective response. Equipment will be decontaminated and cleaned after every call. EMTs will plan, prepare for, and execute EMS training for local responders. EMTs may conduct other emergency services operations with appropriate certifications including Search and Rescue, structural and wildland fire, extrication, and visitor services. The parks respond to roughly 150 SAR incidents a year, with a handful of them requiring technical rescue. EMTs will be responsible to respond as directed to manage foot and vehicle traffic in congested areas. EMTs may be assigned project work during slow periods or intermittent down time.

Housing: Available rental housing units may include tent cabins, mobile homes, apartments, or traditional houses and housing/rooms will likely be shared with other employees, interns, volunteers, etc. Units may be rustic, located in wilderness areas, with few if any modern conveniences. Pets (other than service pets) and overnight guests are not allowed; units are to house assigned employees only.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (96% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,505 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged reaches of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (including Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet elevation) and feature the world's largest trees - Giant Sequoias. Sequoia National Park is the nation's second oldest national park (established September 25, 1890) and encompasses 404,863 acres. Kings Canyon was established on March 4, 1940, and encompasses 458,847 acres. • Yosemite NP: Yosemite, Ca (GS-6,7,8) Telework eligible position with supervisors approval, You may be expected to travel for this position up to 16 nights/month, Drivers license MAY be required.

Important duties at the GS-06 level, include:

• Lead field crews to implement vegetation and ecological restoration project work.
• Controlling invasive exotic plants using a variety of herbicides as well as manual-mechanical methods.
• Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.
• Using GPS to map vegetation and other features.
• Identifying vascular plants to species level using dichotomous keys.
• Leading volunteers.
• Photo documentation of projects.
• Using a variety of computer programs including Geographic Information System (GIS) software to compile, and report data and other resource management information.
• Compiling and presenting educational programs to staff, volunteers and the public.
• Assist in preparing reports, plans, and guidelines. Maintain and organize computer databases.
• Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment. Perform equipment inventories, evaluate quality assurance compliance, order and calibrate parts and equipment/supplies.
• Provide training to others involved in resource management projects and field research.

• Assist staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs. Schedule, coordinate and carry out a variety of field activities.
• Develop and using databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data using standard statistical methods.
• Provide work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians, volunteers, or YCC enrollees.
• Assist in preparing draft news releases and provide information to individuals, local organizations and schools.

• Coordinate the implementation of scientifically credible ecological restoration or vegetation projects
• Collect, maintain, summarize, and report on natural resource data in order to ensure highly credible data acquisition and reporting
• Provides advice, assistance, training to field crews, students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research.
• Assist staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs. Schedule, coordinate and carry out a variety of field activities.
