Our work with the Dept of Veteran Affairs delivers clinical care to Veterans by managing the logistics and flow of supplies and equipment. Supply Chain Management (SCM) ensures that the right equipment and supplies are available when needed, and the Supply Chain Management Product Line (SCM PL) encompasses the activities to procure resources, manage supplies, and deliver goods and services to providers and patients.
What is the position?
Cognosante is looking for a motivated, hands-on Cloud Database Administrator (DBA) with strong logic and interpersonal skills who is up for the challenge of joining a high-performing Data Ecosystem (DE) team (Enterprise Data Warehousing combined with Analytics). As a Cloud DBA, you will work with the Data Architect to lead the strategy and implementation for the data integration solution. In this role, you'll be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of our cloud-based database infrastructure on the AWS platform. You'll ensure the scalability, performance, security, and availability of our databases to support critical business operations. This critical role will focus on driving efficiency, security, and innovation within the VA's supply chain modernization initiative. You will need to clearly identify goals for data management, translate user needs to database design, and create database management processes along with detailed documentation. What will I get to do?
- Design and implement scalable, highly available database solutions utilizing AWS native services (e.g., RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift).
- Leverage AWS tools and services (e.g., EC2, RDS, EBS, S3) to optimize cloud database infrastructure.
- Utilize AWS security features (AM, KMS, Security Groups) to maintain robust database security posture.
- Collaborate with developers and architects to select optimal database technologies based on application requirements.
- Define and enforce database standards, best practices, and security protocols.
- Perform regular database administration tasks, including backups, restores, patching, and upgrades.
- Proactively monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies for optimal performance.
- Conduct proactive capacity planning and scaling in line with fluctuating supply chain demands.
- Diagnose and resolve complex database issues in a timely and efficient manner.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for troubleshooting and knowledge transfer.
- Automate routine database management tasks utilizing scripting and AWS tools.
- Integrate database deployment and provisioning processes into existing CI/CD pipelines.
- Work closely with development teams, systems engineers, and stakeholders to understand data requirements and optimize database usage.
- Support efforts to enforce data governance, data security, and compliance (especially HIPAA-related regulations).
What qualifications do I need?
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. (8 years of experience can be substitute for degree)
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a Database Administrator, with demonstrated expertise in MongoDB, Cockroach DB, and PostgreSQL.
- Deep expertise in AWS relational (RDS, Aurora) and/or NoSQL (DynamoDB) database technologies.
- In-depth understanding of cloud database design principles and best practices within AWS.
- Solid understand of database querying, performance tuning, replication, and sharding concepts.
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one scripting language (Python, Shell, etc.).
- Experience with Database software installation, upgrades, management, troubleshooting, design, support (including backups and recovery), data migration techniques, and Database security.
- Extensive experience dealing with Sensitive Data abiding by Industry Standards and regulations.
- Experience with technical requirements for data classification and implementing data protection technologies.
- Must be able to achieve a moderate (Tier 2) VA position of trust.
What additional characteristics will help me thrive?
- AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Database - Specialty, AWS Certified Solutions Architect)
- Experience with Kubernetes and containerized database environments.
- Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools (CloudFormation, Terraform).
- Understanding of DevOps principles and methodologies.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau and Power BI
- Active clearance for Public Trust Position

Compensation
$96,760.98 - $154,817.56
The pay range for this job is determined by various factors, including but not necessarily limited to location, responsibilities of the job, and alignment with market data. When determining a salary for this role, the following factors may be taken into consideration - contract-specific affordability, education, knowledge, skills, competencies and experience. The estimate displayed represents the salary range for this position and is just one component of Cognosante’s total compensation package for employees.
