Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties include, but are limited to:
- Develops individual or group goals and objectives as well as monitors, operates, evaluates, coordinates, and oversees the Social Work staff of the assigned programs.
- Assures the Social Workers whom they supervise are aware of, adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current Joint Commission standards, State licensure standards, and VA-OIG expectations.
- Conducts ongoing intensive reviews and appraisals to ensure the accomplishment of objectives and adherence to standards set by governing bodies.
- Demonstrates expert knowledge of Social Work practice along with the ability to assume responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating programs.
- Assists in planning, establishing, and implementing policies and procedures.
- Supervises the Social Workers in a variety of clinical areas providing inpatient and outpatient services at Mann-Grandstaff as well as Social Workers practicing independently at the CBOCs.
- Evaluates the performance assigned staff and makes independent professional decisions and recommendations with infrequent recourse to supervisory guidance.
- Analyzes current and future workforce requirements to determine competencies and skills needed.
- Transitions new hires into the position by promptly communicating performance elements and standards within applicable timeframes, providing ongoing feedback, and coaching, and making appropriate use of the probationary period to assess the employee's ability to perform.
- Establishes results-oriented plans with subordinate employees with cascaded goals within 60 days of the beginning of the performance appraisal cycles.
- Identifies and addresses specific, performance-related deficiencies with the employee promptly to ensure the employee is given every opportunity to improve to a successful level of performance.
- Develops the ability of the subordinate staff and others, as appropriate, to perform and contribute to the organization through coaching, mentoring, and providing ongoing feedback and by granting opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.
- Recognizes and rewards employee's contributions and performance by policy and within established timeframes.
- Works with the servicing Human Resources Management Office, as appropriate, to ensure that an employee's conduct deficiencies are addressed expeditiously.
- Ensures that subordinates complete all mandatory training on a timely basis.
- Makes decisions regarding resolution of difficult problems when required, with appropriate input from other key staff members.
- Drafts service level policies to provide staff accurate, current procedural information, instructions, guidelines and resources.
- Drafts assigned Medical Center policies, conducts gap analyses, and institutes necessary revisions.
- Recommends Social Work staffing ratios to meet patient needs.
- Participates in recruiting qualified social workers.
- Responsible for conducting interview panels, selection, and orientation of social workers.
- Oversees orientation for clinical staff regarding Social Work functions.
- Tracks required licensure and/or certification for all social workers, including continuing education requirements, license renewal, and other requirements that social workers must meet to deliver appropriate care.
