In October 2023 East and North Hertfordshire urgent and emergency care services received significant revenue investment. Therefore, we are looking to increase our Nurse Team Leaders with focus on improvements in CDU to improve patient safety and experience as well as help achieve the NHS England’s drive to 4 hour standard.

The CDU plays a crucial role in ensuring assessment, observation, and treatment of patients requiring further evaluation before a decision on their admission or discharge is made.

You will manage the CDU, which is a 7 bed and 4 chair space area along with a team of nurses and clinical support workers, providing clinical guidelines.

You will lead CDU to accommodate frailty patients, patients needing clinical navigator review, and ED patients aiming discharge within the 4 to 6 hours.

You will ensure that patient care is of the highest possible standard and provide advice and support to all staff working in the area.

You will be responsible for the development, monitoring and auditing of standards for use in the clinical area.

Ensuring that care delivered in the clinical area is of the highest quality, supported by research and in accordance with local and national policies, procedures and guidelines.

You will coordinate the daily activities and operations with CDU and safely pulling patients from other areas within ED, ensuring efficient patient flow, timely assessments, and adherence to clinical protocols.

Working in collaboration with other key staff in the clinical group, maintain effective use of bed availability by timely and effective admission and discharge.

It is envisaged that the post holder will work 10 programmed activities over 5 days. Following appointment there will be a meeting at no later than three months with the clinical manager to review and revise the job plan and objectives of the post holder. Manage the specific symptoms of mental illness, de-escalation and helping patients overcome challenges. Liaising with doctors, social workers and other professionals. Interacting with patients' families and caregivers, offering advice and information on patients' conditions. Prepare and maintain patient records, producing care plans and risk assessments. To provide high-quality, evidence-based nursing care. If physical intervention with a patient is required, it is integral that you carry out this duty for your role. Lead a staff team, including HCA's, throughout the patient conveyance or therapeutic observational service. Ensure you have adequate handover of the patient's details, including the risk history and current presentation, from the Clinical Logistics Manager or health care professional responsible for the patient at the collection address. The post holder will work across the UEC, Emergency department (ED)and Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) , Assessment Areas and SDEC service) within ENHT maintaining a high level of clinical presence and providing highly specialised professional advice, consultancy, clinical expertise and leadership to patients, carers and Trust staff.

The successful candidate will demonstrate advanced skills and competencies to directly influence the delivery of programmes of care across the full range of UEC. A significant element of the role will be developing advanced practice and ensuring robust clinical governance frameworks for autonomous practice within UEC services.

The post holder will initiate research in the field of UEC to ensure that evidence-based practice is inherent in all aspects of service delivery.
