The incumbent serves as a Medical Technologist, performing the full range of duties in all areas of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service as assigned. The Medical Technologist may be assigned to one or more of the following departments encompassing the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service: Core Laboratory (Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry sections), Blood Bank, and/or Microbiology/Serology/Molecular.
Duties include but are not limited to: The Medical Technologist rotates with other generalists on a regular basis through the above-mentioned areas. Requires rotations on an as needed basis to perform duties in all sections. They will work off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need.
- Develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results ensuring all laboratory regulatory requirements are met.
- Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, following practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace.
- Performs blood type and screen for antibodies following VBEC's protocols for data entry at each step.
- Performs crossmatch of compatible blood and processing of FFP, platelets, and other components, while maintaining awareness of state and critical request.
- Perform specimen processing, receiving all specimens that arrive in-house, Lab OPD, and CBOC's, ensuring patient identification is verified and maintained.
- Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technician occupation.
- Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/automated techniques. In addition, performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures; tests include complex as well as routine analysis.
- Recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
- Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis taking into account physiologic processes and requirements.
- Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Evaluates and implements new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge.
When assigned specifically to a core specialty area, the Medical Technologist will be able to:
- Perform specialty assignments within core sections.
- Utilize additional advanced, or unique, theories, techniques, and procedures pertinent to the section.
- Recognize limitations of specific methodologies and use professional judgment to select alternative or additional methodologies in order to obtain more meaningful results.
- Perform advanced method or instrumentation troubleshooting, maintenance and quality control procedures as appropriate to the section, inclusive of required documentation.
Work Schedule: Sunday thru Thursday, 12:00am - 8:00am, or Tuesday thru Saturday, 3:30pm - 12:00pm.
