East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) invites applications for a Specialty Doctor (ST3 level +) in Haematology based at Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General hospital.

The clinical team currently comprises 5 consultant/specialist grade haematologists, 2 specialty doctors, a JCF, an ACP, four clinical nurse specialists and a cancer support worker.

The department is warm, friendly, open and supportive and has a professional and friendly working relationship with all teams involved in the care of haematology patients.

The job plan covers all aspects of a Specialty Doctor’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. Job plans are reviewed on an annual basis.

The post is available full time, part time working will be considered.

ELHT has Teaching Hospital status and has an active educational programme. The post holder has an opportunity to participate in the education of medical students/foundation year doctors.

The Department provides a clinical and laboratory service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2a. Salvage therapy and high dose therapy cases are referred to Royal Victoria Hospital Blackpool and Central Manchester Haematology centres. Clinical haematology in-patient beds are ring fenced, with junior doctor cover provided by the medical team. The modern Blood Sciences laboratory is accredited to UKAS ISO15189.

ELHT holds a weekly independent haemato-oncology MDT, with diagnostic services provided by HMDS Leeds and Radiotherapy services provided by Royal Preston Hospital. The MDT is highly rated in the recent cancer peer review.

He lives at home with his wife and pet dog, which you will be able to build up key relationships to anyone else involved. Our Healthcare Assistant roles are considered more of a companionship role by building up key relationships and promoting independence through daily tasks for our service user within their own home and especially within the community.

You will need to communicate with our services users and their next of kin effectively and appropriately, whilst also giving then the opportunity to communicate their needs as well.

Activities will include taking part with clinical tasks, as well as aspects of Personal Care and Moving & Handling.

Support the delivery of training to staff groups across the Trust for Tobacco Very Brief Advice Provide ad hoc advice to ward staff on the provision of nicotine replacement therapy products to manage nicotine withdrawal symptoms where approproiate. Support delivery and development of innovative ways of working with clients including the use of novel technologies. Analyse trends and highlight issues and problems and propose remedial actions using IT software and systems where appropriate. Monitor, develop and evaluate client feedback in order to make service improvement recommendations and learn from good practice and successes. To manage own caseload for daily inpatients smokers list and electronic maternity referrals and their associate interpretation and administration, which will include identifying patients in electronic systems to check information and ward, booking appointments and completing Tobacco Dependency Consultations, documenting discussions, treatment plans and Nicotine Replacement administered and follow ups. Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum and for inpatients as a way to engage in smoking cessation Dispense Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) according to the Trust protocol. To be responsible for documenting patient care on EPR systems and clearly recording actions taken including follow up and mandatory reporting outcomes To maintain detailed and accurate records (manual and electronic) that are consistent with legislation, policies and procedure, regarding interventions and advice given. To contribute to the community pharmacy/Local Authority smoking cessation pathways.
