The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist oncology centre split across two sites: one in Chelsea, London and the other in Sutton, Surrey. We now have a vacancy for an enthusiastic and experienced Medical Laboratory Assistant to work in the Blood Sciences department in Chelsea. The department processes approximately 200 000 samples per year.
Applications are invited for a Medical Laboratory Assistant on our Chelsea site to support our Blood Sciences service. As a member of the departmental team, you will be involved in receiving samples and entering details into the Laboratory IT system. The role also involves performing and supporting the analysis of samples throughout the Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories. You will be expected to be involved in streamlining and modernising processes within the department.
The laboratories are open for routine work between the hours of 08:00 and 20:00, 7 days per week.
Applicants should have experience working in a routine healthcare laboratory and be able to demonstrate excellent team working. The department carries full ISO15189 Accreditation. CPD is actively encouraged.
The post-holder will perform basic tasks to support the Biomedical Scientists within the Blood Sciences laboratories in accordance with Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs). The post holder will organise and receive samples ensuring they are processed in a timely manner, including samples analysed on site and referred to other laboratories.

• To assist with the receipt and processing of biological samples in accordance with SOPs.
• Undertake sample reception and data entry with a high level of accuracy
• Perform analysis of biological samples on basic analytical instrumentation
• Collection and delivery of transport bags and consumables to and from bus / taxi.

• To keep the laboratory manager and BMSs informed of all matters regarding laboratory procedures and help with the smooth running of the dept.
• To acknowledge limits of capability and seek advice as appropriate.
• To participate in the training and assessments for specified areas of the laboratory. To complete training to a satisfactory level of competence in order to carry out duties as required.
