We are looking for a team of medical laboratory assistants to support the provision of our 24/7 service 7 days a week. The role will deliver a hybrid function of specimen reception and laboratory duties for Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Infection divisions. Applicants must have a strong team ethos, with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services of the Trust and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in an Agenda for Change shift system.

The post holder will integrate with the technical & scientific laboratory team and will take direction from Biomedical Scientists in supporting Operational Leads for ESEL sites.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.

You must be able to relate appropriately and sensitively to patients needs in the imaging department. Previous nursing or health care worker experience would be advantageous. We are recruiting for a full-time Finance Assistant - Accounts Receivable, to work in our Finance Department based at the Richmond Campus.
The postholder will be first point of contact for Accounts Receivable queries responding to requests and taking payments at the Finance desk, invoicing and collection of tuition, high needs and other fees, from the College’s students, LAs, sponsors and customer sales invoices. This role spans Pathology Services, the Moorfields Lions Eye Bank and the Department of Eye Pathology (a dedicated Cellular Pathology Department as part of a National service), whom will be coming together in Oriel.

In preparation for that move we are starting to bring the workforce together with roles such as this which have elements which cover all areas on a rotational basis, subject to planned need. .Full comprehensive training shall be provided. The department seeks dynamic individuals with a “can-do” attitude, positive outlook, require minimal supervision and possess the appetite to seek continuous improvement with excellent outcomes.

The role covers the Pathology Services Department within the main Moorfields Hospital. The main duties here are to receive and despatch samples from across the Trust to the relevant pathology provider(s). It is an admin based role, handling the samples and fielding calls and queries from clinical teams relating to the results.

The Moorfields Lions Eye Bank order and receive transplantable tissues and materials from multiple suppliers, before sending them to theatres and network sites for use in patients. There is a need to check theatre lists to ensure tissue is ordered in good time and to check it against acceptance criteria upon receipt. The correct tissue is then distributed for the correct recipient, with a custody trail maintained throughout,

The Department of Eye Pathology forms part of NSOPS and receives ophthalmic samples nationally which are dissected, processed and reported free of charge as a block funded service. Initially the role here would mirror that of a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) until IBMS training accreditation is back in place and then would transfer to a trainee role to enable HCPC registration.

MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES:

Pathology Services:

To collect, log and send samples to the relevant pathology assessment service in accordance with the Pathology standard operating procedures (SOPs) and national guidelines for the for the dispatching of pathology samples.

To receive samples from network sites and clinics, log and send them to the relevant provider, returning the labelled Bio-Bottle containers to the originator as required.

To safely handle, log and send pathology samples (blood and other body fluid samples, tissue samples and so forth) to the relevant pathology provider.

To carefully check the request form and patient samples in accordance with the Request Form and specimen Labelling Policy.

To prioritise the workload so that urgent samples are dealt with in a timely manner and to record all urgent requests as required, to follow these up and promptly give results to the requesting clinician.

To field and escalate issues raised either via phone, the shared mailbox or physically so that the issue can be resolved to all party’s satisfaction.

To provide support to colleagues within the department, as needed.

Moorfields Lions Eye Bank

To scrutinise, with colleagues, and action the daily transplant lists, to ensure the correct tissue is in the correct place in advance of surgery.

To source and order tissues as required from multiple tissue providers (NHSBT, MiS, RMLEB, NuVision and Wescott Medical) to maintain relevant stocks locally.

To undertake appropriate checks on receipt of tissues and ensure the appropriateness of both the tissue and storage conditions.

To ensure, with colleagues, that Tissue usage paperwork if completed for each issued tissue and to chase when there are identified gaps.

To review and generate reports as needed for providers, including the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), Infection Control (IPC) and Graft Outcome Clinics (GOC).

To provide support to colleagues within the department, as needed.

Department of Eye Pathology

To receive samples and biopsies from national senders and handle them in accordance with local guidelines.

To carefully check the request form and patient samples whilst booking the samples in to the departments’ computer system,/database.

To support the Biomedical Scientists by undertaking duties which they request, such as changing the processing machines, refreshing reagents across various analysers, running IQC and retrieving solvents from the bulk store as needed.

Miscellaneous:

To support the line managers towards continuously improving the service delivery and efficiency streams. As such, there may be a requirement to perform any other essential duties required to succeed in the role.

We are looking for band 2 Medical Laboratory Assistant’s for the Central Specimen Reception Department. These are full time permanent positions (37.5 hours per week).

The department provides a 24/7 service and the successful candidates will be required to participate in the shift system to cover early, late, weekend and bank holiday rosters. Some night duties may also be required.

These roles will be based at the Royal London Hospital, however cross site working will be required and the successful applicant may be required to work at any of our NHS ESEL Pathology Partnership sites.

The laboratories are UKAS and HCPC accredited. Our commitment to supporting continuing professional development is evidenced by an excellent training record.

Main duties of the job – The duties will be varied and we have a team of MLA’s who undertake tasks on a rotational basis.

The post holder is expected to work as part of a team to receive, sort, book distribute specimens within Pathology. Core duties involve receipting of specimens and entering data into the laboratory information systems, basic preparation of specimens where appropriate, and placing them into racks on automated tracks or taking them to laboratory areas for processing.
We are looking for people with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner and with the ability to work accurately when under pressure to meet deadlines.

The successful candidates should have the ability to follow written protocol with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership  is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.  The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
