We are looking for a Clinical Trials Assistant to take on an exciting new role, based in the Orthopaedic Research Team but working predominantly with the Newcastle Retrieval Centre based at the Freeman Hospital.

The successful candidate will be based in a small team providing a multi-disciplinary, integrated tissue / implant service within the Trust. Which will develop links with industry, academia and NHS organisations and be able to rapidly answer clinical questions which demand analysis of patient tissue. This will be both an expansion and amalgamation of the existing Newcastle Orthopaedic Retrieval Service (NRC) and the Tissue and Explant Analysis of Medical Implant Failure (TEAM) services to incorporate a range of surgical specialities.

The role will provide an opportunity for the post holder to expand upon their current skills and experience; handling and processing patient samples, contributing towards the expansion of research delivery to beyond the current surgical specialties and working with university based scientists as they analyse samples as we work towards answering important clinical questions.

Working in a small team under the supervision of a Clinical Trials Officer and supported by the Orthopaedic Research Team the post holder will carry out duties to facilitate important clinical research. The post holder will carry out duties including:

· Identifying and screening potential research participants.

· Approaching patients to discuss our research and obtaining informed consent.

· Input of participant data into research databases, ensuring accurate records.

· Accurate input of participant data onto electronic case report forms.

· Coordination of research sample collection with clinical teams.

· Research sample processing and storage.

· Supporting the team in the overall running of our studies.

• Coordinate and improve trial communication throughout Multi-Disciplinary Teams throughout the Trust

The successful candidate may work independently, managing their own caseload and making treatment decisions autonomously for a select group of patients over-viewed/delegated by the qualified Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists on the team. To prepare the treatment area and tidying up after use, including the disposal of soiled linen and the cleaning of equipment.
