We are seeking a postgraduate with a background in physical sciences and experience in optical and instrument design to lead our Optical Design department. As the Principal Optical Engineer, you will work on cutting-edge projects, pushing the boundaries of materials and technology to deliver bespoke, complex shaped large optics for astronomical, physical science, airborne, and space applications.
Responsibilities include negotiating design input with clients, overseeing project delivery, preparing reports, and providing technical leadership. You will collaborate across engineering disciplines to deliver precision optics and instrumentation, ensuring all design and measurement meet contractual requirements. Additionally, you will participate in technical sales activities, project costing, and maintain communication with customers and internal teams.
The ideal candidate for the Principal Optical Engineer position at Glyndwr Innovations Ltd should possess the following qualifications and skills:
- A doctoral degree in a physical sciences or engineering discipline
- Familiarity with classical and wave optics, including lenses, mirrors, optical aberrations, and interferometry.
- Strong practical laboratory and experimental skills.
- Knowledge of experimental statistics to provide training for colleagues.
- Understanding of modern Systems Engineering concepts and methodologies.
- Experience with metrology equipment in a manufacturing or laboratory setting.
- Thorough understanding of optical design methodologies, aberration theory, and tolerancing.
- Practical use of computer-aided optical design software such as Zemax or Code V.
- Ability to analyse sources and propagation of experimental errors and determine statistical uncertainty in results.
- Familiarity with interferometric measurement techniques.
