As a Supervisory General Engineer, you will:

• Serve as the Project Engineering Division Chief and manage operation of the Division, including supervising and developing the Division’s staff.
• Serve as the principal advisor to the Director, Office of Railroad Planning and Engineering on all matters related to engineering reviews and approvals, including but not limited to projects receiving approval into preliminary engineering or acceptance into final design.
• Lead, review and provide oversight over the Amtrak, State and railroad capital planning/implementation, including state-of-good-repair, capacity improvement, service enhancement projects, and other projects resulting from discretionary and/or formula funding programs.
• Direct and lead the identification and incorporation of best practices in railroad engineering, operations, and project planning/development from across the industry and internationally.
• Establish internal and external procedures, guidelines, and standards to review, assess and provide adequate technical assistance, guidance, and approvals where necessary throughout the project development phases on engineering components.

The ideal candidate for this position has significant experience supervising a staff of engineers, including vast experience in delivering technical guidance and expertise on engineering matters related to passenger rail projects. The candidate is a subject matter expert in the areas of transportation engineering; is an experienced professional who is comfortable in a fast-paced work environment with regular interactions with senior leadership; exhibits creativity, sound judgment, discretion, attention to detail, and sensitivity to protocol, deadlines and timetables; has the ability to manage multiple engineering projects and competing priorities; possesses a strong work ethic, strong logic and reasoning skills and a demonstrated ability to accurately interpret literal and thematic subject matter; is diplomatic, responsive, and comfortable working within a diverse, multicultural, rapidly evolving organization. The incumbent performs as a Supervisory Biomedical Engineer for the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) program at the Kansas City VAMC, a large, 1b complexity medical center. The Kansas City VAMC has 157 beds and 8 CBOCs serving more than 50,000 veterans. The facility is supported by $47million inventory of medical equipment. HTM Service oversees all medical equipment systems.

Major duties include but not limited to:

• Apply advanced knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, and practices of biomedical engineering. Keep abreast of changes in technology and utilize the information gained in the solution of biomedical engineering problems to meet operational needs of multiple facilities.
• Ability to directly support the most complex and specialized clinical technology including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance for multiple facilities.
• Directly support the most complex and specialized clinical technology including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance for multiple facilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines, senior management, VHA Central Office, and VISN staff.
• Has responsibility supervising technical staff, including lower-level engineers, biomedical engineering technicians, and other staff typically found at a university affiliated tertiary care facility (complexity level 1,) with one or more subordinate biomedical engineers. In this assignment, supervisory biomedical engineers at the facility level will have notable ongoing responsibilities, supporting VISN biomedical engineering initiatives, and/or notable ongoing responsibilities as assigned by the Healthcare Technology Management Program Office.
• Knowledge of the management of overall department resources, i.e., finances, space, equipment, supplies, and staffing at the local level or at the VISN level.
• Draft and/or make recommendations to policies and /or directives related to healthcare technology management in scope of organizational objectives spanning from multiple facilities, VISN or national.
• Sets priorities, responsibilities, meets multiple deadlines, analyze organizational problems, delegate tasks, and develop and implement effective solutions.
• Supporting an equipment management program that meets current Joint Commission, FDA, CAP, CARF, NFPA, and VA requirements.
