Job Description

This Engineer position is in the Thermal Engineering group under Combination Product Operations. This position requires the application of diverse and advanced engineering & scientific principles in support of transportation testing and operation within Amgen.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing transportation lab operation and performing lab related testing. The individual will actively participate in multi-functional teams to qualify shipping solutions that meet Amgen’s expanding business need and serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for addressing and resolving technical issues or challenges related to cold chain shippers. In addition, the individual will lead the management of CAPA/Deviation/Change-control activities; perform technical assessment and studies; write technical reports, manuals, specifications, SOPs, and bill-of-materials with minimal supervision. This position also carries responsibilities for managing collaborative relationships with internal customers and external partners.

Responsibilities

• Complete all lab related testing per test protocols in accordance with operating standards, SOPs and regulatory requirements, while understanding safety precautions.

• Familiarity with lab testing equipment, e.g., Compression Tester, Vibration Systems, Environmental Chambers, Vacuum Systems, and Drop Tester.

• Responsible for planning and scheduling all lab related activities, such equipment calibration, maintenance, lab tour, etc.

• Manage lab budget/expense and supply inventory levels to satisfy testing demand.

• Able to solve and perform general maintenance on equipment to keep a test running.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (i.e. Research and Development, QA/QC, Supply Chain, Maintenance, Manufacturing, Regulatory) on protocol review, testing preparation, change control process, deviation & CAPA, and controlled documentation.

In this role the Sr Engineer is responsible for planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and technical support of Amgen manufacturing infrastructure, world-wide. The Engineering Technical Authority (TA) is responsible for technical direction, leadership, guidance, and support for a specific array of process systems within an area of responsibility, such as Upstream Processes, Downstream Processes, Fill/Finish, CIP/SIP, Clean Utilities, Utilities, HVAC, Packaging, Devices, etc. Through their team(s) of global and site technical domain experts, the TA will bring to bear engineering expertise both in the company and industry to optimize the life cycle management of Amgen’s assets and is accountable for performance and reliability across multiple sites. This position is in the Process System Engineering team, the position is for Formulation and Filling Systems with responsibility for technical leadership to formulation, aseptic filling and lyophilization operations for the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals.

Planning: Working with clients, as appropriate (e.g., PD, Quality, Manufacturing), develop and specify engineering standards, specifications, equipment selection and design. Develop metrics to support procurement strategies for equipment, inventory management, spares, and preventative maintenance. Construction: Use their TA network to provide engineering support during the construction process, including responses to RFIs, resolving complex technical issues and conflicts, supporting overall project objectives.

Commissioning: Ensure commissioning and qualification standards are developed and used. Use their network to provide engineering support to commissioning and qualification.

Operations: Support development of, or approve operation procedures for the safe, efficient, and effective operations of systems. Review performance data and make recommendations for improvement of system operations. Support NC/CAPA investigations related to equipment failures.

Maintenance: Support systems failure analysis, approve maintenance standards and techniques. The position will support global supply, new product introductions, partnerships/acquisitions and combination products. This position will apply engineering principles to implement the accurate design, qualification and implementation of Primary and Secondary Packaging components and the associated systems such as documentation, equipment, and processes. A knowledge of common materials used in healthcare packaging is key to this role. Material knowledge of structural components are integral in the day-to-day oversight of this role: bottles, labels, trays, lidding material, leaflets, paperboard, sterile barrier packaging, corrugate, etc. This role may have some junior level management potential and the successful candidate will also apply excellent organizational, project management, technical problem solving and communication (written and verbal) skills, with the ability to work in teams and adapt to a dynamic environment.

• Possible management of junior level engineers and contingent workers
• Lead testing and evaluations to recommend and select primary and secondary packaging materials for both large and small molecule products

Undergrad Intern - Engineering

As a Reliability Engineer Intern, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and performance of critical assets that directly support clinical and commercial manufacturing of Amgen’s biologics portfolio. You will work closely with our experienced engineering team to analyze and enhance the reliability of systems, identify maintenance efficiency levers through use of lean six sigma concepts (e.g. VSM, DMAIC, FMEA etc), develop and deploy risk assessments framework and tools, and implement improvements. This internship is designed to provide valuable insights into real-world reliability engineering practices and contribute to the success of our organization.

Project might involve doing one or more of the following:

• Facilitate reliability centered maintenance assessments, spares design and inventory optimization, vendor single point fail risks assessments in collaboration with SMEs to apply six sigma methodologies for improving maintenance strategies, and implementation
• Develop & Deploy Advanced analytics along with Engineering SME for predicative analytics on asset performance

Key learnings for staff in this role are applications of reliability centered maintenance strategies, condition-based maintenance techniques, and good engineering practices, data science applications, advanced analytics, and project management capabilities for Reliability Engineering projects.

• Soft skills learnings include – Working in diverse teams, Influencing teams, Decision making
• Developing expertise in end-to-end lifecycle management and the strategic analysis involved in making business plans
• Developing a strong understanding of Operations including: drug development, manufacturing, global planning, and associated financials

Basic Qualifications

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for an undergrad internship or a co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

• 18 years or older
• Currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s Degree program from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent
• Completion of one year of study from an accredited college or university prior to the internship commencing
• Enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s degree program following the potential internship or co-op assignment with an accredited college or university
• Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
• Student must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship OR co-op

Preferred Qualifications

• Majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related fields
• Data science/Analytics, Engineering or sciences - Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data and trends related to asset performance, spares inventory optimization based on failure frequency and usage, and potential areas for improvement.
• Root Cause Analysis: Investigate and determine the root causes of failures or performance issues and propose corrective actions, taking into consideration the impact on spare parts availability.
• Working in teams: Interpersonal and influencing skills to drive progress
• Continuous Improvement: Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, offering insights and recommendations to enhance overall product reliability and spares management efficiency.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate records of reliability tests, analysis results, spare parts optimization strategies, and inventory management for future reference.
