Wellcome FUTUREPOP project

We are delighted to welcome applications for a research post in the area of population forecasting and demographic modelling as part of the FuturePop project, funded by the Wellcome Trust. The new funding is a collaborative project between the University of Southampton and the University of Bristol.

The project is led by Dr Laurence Hawker and Prof. Andy Tatem and aims to produce high spatial resolution (100m grid cell) global age/sex-structured population estimates for multiple socio-economic scenarios. This project extends previous work conducted by the WorldPop and University of Bristol groups by incorporating spatially varying patterns between covariates and population size, as well as by quantifying uncertainty around estimates.

This post sits within a FuturePop work package focused on the production of subnational population projections by administrative geography. Estimates at high spatial resolution are produced by disaggregation of such estimates and projections, and thus the post forms a key part of the workflow in this area. In particular, the post-holder will develop probabilistic methodology to produce estimates and projections of the global population by subnational areas.

The work package is led by Dr Jason Hilton, Dr Laurence Hawker and Prof. Andy Tatem, and the research position will be based in the Department of Social Statistics and Demography, but the post holder will also need to develop strong working relationships with colleagues in the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences and at the University of Bristol.

To be successful in this role you will have, or will be close to completing, a PhD (or have equivalent professional qualifications and experience) with a strong statistical or mathematical component, such as in statistics, demography, economics, geography, or mathematics. Essential attributes for the role are: experience in statistical modelling; proficiency in the use of R, Python or other equivalent programming language; the ability to plan and organise work independently and as part of a team; and the ability to write research presentations and papers. Additionally, knowledge of demographic projection methods, knowledge of Bayesian statistical methods, and/or experience of working with geospatial data would be an advantage.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The Role:

We have 2 available roles and are seeking a Course Leader for both the BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing and the Postgraduate (PG) Fashion Marketing courses. What you'll need to succeed
As well as strong communication and organisational skills, you should have:

• A PhD (or be nearing completion) in molecular biology, biochemistry, cancer genomics, or related fields, or significant equivalent experience
• Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including RNA/DNA analysis, PCR, protein analysis, and western blotting.
• Advanced cloning skills, with experience in genetic engineering, vector construction, and CRISPR/Cas9 systems.
• Expertise in recombinant protein design and expression, utilising systems like E. coli, along with purification methods such as FPLC and mass spectrometry.
• Familiarity with genomic technologies like ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and single-cell methods, preferably within oncology research, though this is not essential.

It would be an advantage to have good data analysis skills and experience using programming / scripting languages such as Python and/or R, along with tools like MATLAB and Bioconductor, however training can be provided.

This vital role oversees the daily work of a team of embedded research librarians who work with researchers to ensure they have access to the information needed to support a thriving Parliamentary democracy.

The Role

Comprising around twenty people, the Research Information Service is a team of highly skilled information professionals who connect the wider Research and Information research community with the resources (physical, digital and human) they need to complete their work. The Senior Research Librarian will work closely with the Head of Service to ensure high quality service delivery in line with strategic goals and take responsibility for a range of projects.

Line management and a coaching approach are essential to this role. The postholder will be responsible for the direct line management of a group of Research Librarians in addition to deputising for the Head of Service in their absence.

What you’ll do

- You will provide undergraduate clinical teaching in Child Health for Medical students from Southampton University Faculty of Medicine along with the General Paediatric Consultant team at University Hospital Southampton
- You will collate feedback from students and work with educational leads to improve the undergraduate course.
- You will be supported to contribute to the work-based assessment of Medical students from Southampton University Faculty of Medicine
- You will support post graduate educational activities within Southampton Children’s Hospital by coordinating and managing educational teaching programmes for junior trainees and coordinating wider MDT educational sessions.
- You will provide care for General Paediatric in-patients and out-patients based at Southampton Children’s Hospital and provide out of hours care as part of the Paediatric middle grade on call rota.
- You will be supported to evaluate, review, and help to redesign the delivery of Child Health Undergraduate teaching in Southampton.

Applications are invited for PICU Research Fellows (Registrar ST3+ equivalent) in Paediatric Intensive Care at Southampton General Hospital commencing August / September 2020.

No prior experience of PICU or research is required, but a minimum of two years of either paediatrics (including neonates) OR anaesthesia OR ICU is essential. This post will be split approximately 50% clinical on PICU on the registrar rota, and 50% in the research to role to provide day to day care for children undertaking clinical trials in the Paediatric Critical Care setting. WHAT YOU’LL DO

Clinical Role:Southampton PICU is a 16 bedded mixed intensive care unit admitting around 1000 patients each year. We are the regional referral centre for Wessex and run the combined Southampton Oxford retrieval team (SORT) service for the Wessex / Oxford network, moving around 500 critically ill and injured children per year.

Our case mix includes cardiac, ECMO, neonatal and neurosurgical cases as well as the full range of general and paediatric sub-speciality work. We are the Wessex paediatric major trauma centre, with a dedicated paediatric emergency department on site. The successful applicant will form part of the middle grade rota for PICU, which includes shifts for the retrieval service. Full retrieval training will be provided for those without paediatric transport experience. We run a comprehensive induction and training programme for all staff starting PICU. This is a great opportunity for trainees wanting PICU experience before progressing with training or before taking substantive consultant posts.

Research Role:University Hospital Southampton is consistently among the highest recruiting NHS Trusts for all NIHR commercial and non-commercial research including interventional studies. The Southampton National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is the operational centre of translational research at the University of Southampton (UoS) and Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The CRF operates to support research across all specialities and brings together all areas engaged in clinical translational research (including the current Southampton NIHR CRF, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and NIHR CRUK Experimental Cancer Research Centre). The NIHR CRF is part of a national network of CRFs with adult and paediatric capability.

The primary role of this post is to provide day to day care for children undertaking clinical trials in the Paediatric Critical Care setting. In addition, the Fellow may be asked to assist in the running of other clinical studies and trials for patients. By arrangement this may be outside of the primary speciality. We are very excited to be recruiting for a Senior Student and Family Support Worker (Offsite Learning Provision) at Rowhill School. Rowhill School is a Pupil Referral Unit serving 13.5 secondary schools across North-East and East Hampshire. We have capacity to work with approximately 82 students on our roll at any one time and work with upwards of 50 students through our outreach programmes either in their mainstream schools or their homes. Students are referred to Rowhill School for a variety of reasons including being medically unfit for school, emotionally vulnerable, at risk of permanent exclusion or because they have been permanently excluded from school.
This is as an exciting opportunity to be part of the introduction of an offsite learning provision designed to support students who are struggling to attend their mainstream school. The successful candidate will provide in home support for students tailored to whatever need is preventing them from successfully attending their mainstream school and once ready will support students to return to their mainstreams in liaison with home school staff. This is a developmental opportunity and as the provision grows it is envisaged that the successful candidate will have the skills to lead a team of Student and Family Support Workers to effectively deliver this provision.
The aim of this role will be to work with students, their families in their homes and in liaison with their mainstream school to support their learning and emotional needs. This will involve working in a variety of ways to build relationships and overcome barriers to attendance, learning and engagement. The role will include visiting students in their homes, working on a one-to-one basis with students both on and off their mainstream school site, and working with staff in mainstream school to plan their return when ready.
