Senior Laboratory Research Scientist

We have an opportunity for a talented, experienced, and motivated Senior Laboratory Research Scientist in the Proteomics Scientific Technology Platform at the Francis Crick Institute. The post holder will help us provide a world class platform to contribute towards key research in collaboration with the wider Crick scientific community. This is a lab-based position, responsible for driving forward qualitative and quantitative proteomic and clinical proteomic projects, from experimental design through sample preparation to data analysis.

The Proteomics STP houses a broad range of mass spectrometers including a Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid with FAIMS and ETD, Exploris 480, Q Exactive UHMR, Bruker timsTOF Ultra and Pro2, Waters Select Cyclic and SYNAPT G2Si HDMS. The role will involve setting up new experiments as collaborative projects arise using the available mass spectrometry technologies to both qualitatively and quantitatively measure proteins.

Key Responsibilities
These include but are not limited to:

• Planning of experiments, decision making about which pipeline to take, and independently executing experiments for projects.
• Performing both standard and bespoke proteomics experiments starting with sample preparation from a variety of biological sources using common biochemical methodologies for cell lysis, SDS-PAGE, in-gel, in-solution, TCA and acetone precipitation digest protocols, TMT labelling, high pH chromatographic fractionation and label free quantification.
• LC-MS/MS nanoUHPLC data acquisition, evaluation, and processing of raw data.
• Communication of results in collaboration.

The Opportunity:

Senior Research Fellow (qualitative methods) to join the Discovering Liveability: Co-producing alternatives to suicide prevention project, contributing to the leadership of innovative suicide research that centres liveability and lived/living experience.

The Opportunity:

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is seeking a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) based within the Hospital for Small Animals on Easter Bush Campus, just outside Edinburgh. The successful applicant will join our established ECC team, and will share supervision of our combined emergency receiving and ICU services within our well-equipped multidisciplinary teaching hospital.

Short summary

The Quantitative Stem Cell Biology lab, headed by Dr Silvia Santos, is seeking a Senior Laboratory Research Scientist (SLRS). The successful candidate will investigate spatio-temporal control of cell division and cell cycle remodelling during cellular differentiation using 2D and 3D stem cell-based models of human gastrulation. The postholder will drive a research project and contribute to collaborative projects within the lab. The postholder will benefit from excellent mentorship and training.

The research group
The Quantitative Stem Cell Biology lab, headed by Dr Silvia Santos, was established in 2018 at the Francis Crick Institute. The lab’s primary focus is understanding cell decision-making. Current areas of research include understanding regulatory mechanism regulating cell fate specification, cell cycle remodeling during cellular differentiation and the interplay between metabolism, cell cycle and cell fate. There is a strong focus on single cell analysis and advanced live cell imaging. The lab uses a variety of model systems: mouse and human embryonic stem cells (ESC), 3D organoid models of mouse and human development and mouse embryos.
The team is multi-disciplinary, diverse and currently composed of three PhD students, two post-doctoral fellow and one principal laboratory research scientist. The Santos lab promotes independent and creative thinking and all members are committed to providing excellent training and mentorship.

Senior Laboratory Research Scientist - High Throughput Screening

Short summary
The High Throughput Screening (HTS) facility is one of the core science technology platforms (STP’s) available to all researchers at the Crick. We enable researchers at all levels to use large-scale screening techniques as part of their research. Our most popular activities include arrayed genome-wide CRISPR deletion and CRISPRa over-expression screens, genome-wide RNAi screens, large-scale cell-based screens with collections of well-characterised small molecules or proof-of-concept probe or tool discovery screens. The majority of the output of these screens is high content imaging. We also develop novel screening platforms as required by researchers one example of which is our development of a high throughput neutralisation assay to assess the ability of patient serum to prevent SARS Cov-2 infection (now succesfully spun off as a separate unit within the Crick).

Key Responsibilities
• Full project engagement and involvement (both strategically and at the bench) from initial assay development, to prosecuting the screen and final data analysis
• Quickly understand new biological systems and techniques when necessary and drive the whole screening process
• Creation of cell-based assays for high throughput screening applications in collaboration with, and harnessing the expertise of, domain experts
• Using existing High Content Imaging and liquid handling infrastructure effectively and inventively across a wide range of projects
• Employ a range of different reagents and where appropriate reagents are not available, create new ones e.g. creating cell lines
• Independently explore new screening techniques and approaches with a focus on meeting the user’s needs within tight timelines
• Establish viable cell free assays and prosecute such screens at scale with a range of modalities (e.g. HTRF, FP, thermal shift assays)

Senior Laboratory Research Scientist – Cryo-electron Microscopy

Short summary
The Senior Laboratory Research Scientist (SLRS) will be appointed to the Structural Biology Science Technology Platform (SB STP), which supports the Crick in the areas of protein science (expression and purification), biophysics, X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and related areas. The post holder will help provide a world class platform to contribute towards key research in collaboration with the Crick scientific community. This is a lab-based position, responsible for driving forward cryo-EM research by providing scientific support and training in single-particle and tomography technologies.

The role of a Senior Laboratory Research Scientist in the Crick is diverse and rewarding. The role covers a wide range of different functions and allows for continuity of lab operations. The role offers support to one or more scientific projects or programmes. Within a Science Technology Platform(STP) - typical activities include:
• Providing experimental or technical support to STP users
• Providing technical expertise/input for the development, refinement and troubleshooting of relevant/novel methodologies.
• Managing long-term collaborations with STP users.
• Participating in academic activities, including group meetings and journal clubs, seminars, and scientific meetings.

The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) is an internationally leading department, Delivering Total Engineering for responsible and sustainable futures. We seek to appoint two positions as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader in Supply Chain Engineering Management. These posts are part of a wider talent and thought leader recruitment strategy. In the UK, a Lecturer is tenured and at Assistant Professor level, a Senior Lecturer is tenured and at Associate Professorship level, and a Reader position is tenured and at next level following an Associate Professorship, equivalent to a promoted Professorship as it is, for example, termed in Sweden.

The position is aimed at research leaders who have a technical background, e.g. in operations and production engineering or related disciplines bridging to business and social sciences. Engineering Management is a core area and one of the three main pillars that DMEM is founded on and critical to it being a unique Department in the UK with a rising number of students registering for associated programmes.

Operations and production management or engineering supply chain management expertise plays a vital role across the Department’s key activities of research, teaching and knowledge exchange.

You must have research experience and interests consistent with the strategic direction of the Department, Faculty and University and you will have experience of research leadership, including support of senior researchers in a University or industrial environment and management of research teams/projects/programmes. You will have extensive experience of delivering high quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students including experience of developing and managing large teaching programmes and you will have experience of PhD/EngD research project supervision in Higher Education.

You will have an outstanding/sustained track record of published research in high quality publications demonstrating standards of excellence, with an international reputation. You will have an outstanding/substantial track record of securing research funding through relevant successful collaborative research grant applications and you will have an established national/international reputation as an expert and leader within Supply Chain Engineering Management. You will be an excellent educator and mentor and will show leadership in identifying key research questions and attracting funding support. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong people skills and an ability to operate as part of a team.

We are looking for a proactive and motivated Research Bid Development Executive to join the University of Edinburgh’s new Strategic Proposals team. As such, they will have a vital contribution towards meeting the goals of the University’s ambitious Research and Innovation 2030 Strategy.

The Opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to support the embedding of the Strategic Proposals team, which is core to the University’s newly launched Research & Innovation 2030 Strategy. The post holder will primarily support University applicants leading strategic international proposals to be submitted to prestigious schemes such as the European Research Council (ERC) calls. They will work closely with colleagues from across Edinburgh Research Office, as well as broader research support services including those in Schools, Institutes and Colleges.

Senior/Laboratory Research Scientist – Santos Lab

Short summary

The Quantitative Stem Cell Biology lab, headed by Dr Silvia Santos, is seeking a Senior Laboratory Research Scientist (SLRS). The postholder will drive a research project and contribute to collaborative projects within the lab.

The Quantitative Stem Cell Biology lab, headed by Dr Silvia Santos, was established in 2018 at the Francis Crick Institute. The lab’s primary focus is understanding cell decision-making. Current areas of research include understanding regulatory mechanism regulating cell fate specification, cell cycle remodeling during cellular differentiation and the interplay between metabolism, cell cycle and cell fate. There is a strong focus on single cell analysis, advanced live cell imaging, multi-omics approaches and computations. The lab uses a variety of model systems: mouse and human embryonic stem cells (ESC), 3D organoid models of mouse and human development and mouse embryos. The team is multi-disciplinary, diverse and currently composed of two PhD students, two post-doctoral fellow and one principal laboratory research scientist. The Santos lab promotes independent and creative thinking and all members are committed to providing excellent training and mentorship.
