About the role

As part of our continued growth, we now have a fantastic opportunity for a Learning Support Assistant to join our close-knit team at The Wenlock School located in Dudley, West Midlands.

About the role

The Learning Support Assistant will work specifically with individual pupils who are placed at the school, requiring 1:1 staff support. They may experience multiple social, emotional and learning challenges, related behaviours ranges from speech and sound disorder, disordered expressive language skills, delayed understanding of language, concentration and attention difficulties, challenging behaviour and work avoidance behaviours. This role is predominantly education based but will also have a wider remit including supporting families, carers and the wider community. This role will also involve close working partnerships with all relevant agencies that support the young person including Social Workers, Speech and Language Therapy Service, Social Communication Disorder Assessment Service, Early Intervention Team and an Educational Psychologist. Work may sometimes be undertaken outside the main teaching area. To share the school’s responsibility to support and promote the learning, personal development and well-being of all pupils.

General Responsibilities

The post holder will:

Safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils and young people;
Work in accordance with professional practice, statutory and legal requirements and the policies of The Wenlock School;
Take on specific tasks related to the day to day administration and organisation of the school;
Take responsibility for specific areas of work which will be reviewed annually then negotiated and agreed within the performance management cycle and school improvement process;
Take on any additional responsibilities which might from time to time be determined.

We are a co-educational day school catering for pupils aged 7-18 with a range of complex needs including a range of social, emotional and mental health needs and also pupils who have been diagnosed with autism or demonstrate behaviours associated with autism.

About the role

Care First Reeves Street is a further education provider with the plan to be registered as a college with EHCP in the coming future, caring and supporting student from the ages of 19-25 with complex care needs and SEMH needs. We look to support and prepare our students so that when they reach 25 they are able to transition from our service into a more independent life style.

As a Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include the preparation of learning materials, facilitation of classroom activities, and hands-on involvement, including some supervisory duties. The pupils we work with have a complex range of social, emotional, and additional needs, and supporting them appropriately is key, these will vary and the challenges faced different for each learner.

You would also provide and deliver high quality person-centered education, learning outcomes and or care support needed to service users with learning disabilities, autism, Mental Health, Behavioural support needs, Complex health, physical disabilities and or PMLD in accordance with Company policies procedures and practice standards set by the Regulatory Body.

Key task areas and responsibilities:

To support and promote development of Service Users attending the ‘Skills Tank’ Provision and to meet the range of social care, Leaning and Education support needs for vulnerable adults with a broad range of needs and conditions.
To actively support the Hub Manager in the delivery of Educational and Learning through fun, meaningful session and activities always promoting a quality and professional service. Ensuring tracked appropriately on daily systems.
To give concise and accurate feedback and reports to Hub Manager on each learner’s progress so that assessments, support plans, behaviour plans and other individual information are focused and clear on support needs, learning outcomes and achievements.
To provide relevant and appropriate support to Service Users, on an individual or group basis, in order to enable them to access the curriculum and learning outcomes as independently as possible.
To ensure that the available equipment and resources are used, stored and maintained efficiently, reporting any maintenance issues to Hub Manager or Deputy Manager.
To organise the classroom, its resources, Service User groupings and displays to provide a stimulating learning situation. Leading practical, work base or enterprise sessions inline with planning and timetables for service users learning goals specific to the learning environment they access.

Main duties and
responsibilities


To work in partnership with class
teachers to support learning with individuals or small groups of children under
the direction of the class teacher.


Learning Support Assistants will
be expected to:


1. Work with the class teacher
and implement planned learning activities/teaching programmes as agreed with
the teacher


2. Adjust learning activities
based on pupils’ responses as appropriate to achieve effective learning
outcomes


3. Keep notes of children’s work
and provide information to the teacher for monitoring, assessing and recording
pupil progress/activities. Contribute to review meetings as necessary


4. Provide feedback to pupils in
relation to attainment and progress under the guidance of the teacher


5. Support learning by
arranging/providing resources for lessons/activities under the direction of the
teacher


6. Liaise with other teachers and
specialist staff, provide information about pupils as appropriate and support
programmes of work which they may set


7. Deliver Literacy and Numeracy
intervention strategies as appropriate


8. Understand and support pupils
with special needs. Be prepared to support children with sensory, physical,
learning and behaviour needs


9. Support the work of volunteers
and other learning support staff in the classroom


10. Assist with break-time
supervision including facilitating games and activities


11. Assist with escorting pupils
on educational visits


12. Assist with the preparation
and maintenance of stocks of materials and resources. Maintain equipment so
that it is easily accessible to children


13. Carry out clerical and
display tasks as directed by the class teacher


14. Attend to pupils’ personal
care needs including help with social, welfare and health matters including the
administration of first aid at an appropriate level


15. Establish and maintain good
relationships with parents and carers


16. Work within the school’s
framework promoting equal opportunities for all and embrace the inclusive,
diverse nature of the school community


17. Work as a member of a team,
showing initiative as required


18. Ensure that confidentiality

Training
Your full role and responsibilities will be set out by your employer. Pleasant street Primary will provide you with all of the on-the-job training you need to up-skill in your role, and your 20% off-the-job learning will be incorporated as part of your working day.
You will be working towards the Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard, which includes:

CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Safeguarding and Prevent

Qualifications required
English and Maths to a Grade 4 or equivalent - desirable
Experience of working with or caring for children of a relevant age in a voluntary or work experience capacity is desirable.
