To complete the assessment and treatment of patients in the UTC who may present with complex and/or chronic illnesses and/or injury; in order to determine a clinical diagnosis, treatment and appropriate discharge. Post holders must also manage the effective streaming and prioritization of patients self-presenting/referred to Luton UTC at the front door, to ensure the patients are managed in the most appropriate way. Successful applicants will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including GPs, ANPs/ENPs/ECPs (Urgent Care Practitioners) and operational staff. All staff are expected to contribute to meeting Key Performance Indicators mandated by the service within the time frames identified. The post holder will work the full complement of the rota as required by the service. Principle Responsibilities will Include: • To autonomously undertake clinical assessments, diagnose, treat and discharge patients with • a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries, including management of complex cases • To work as a key member of the multidisciplinary team to provide effective face-to face assessment within the UTC to ensure that patients are streamed to the correct clinician with the correct clinical priority for their condition • To stream and prioritise self-presenting/referred patients to Luton UTC at the front door. • To support access for patients within the UTC service opening hours and facilitate a clear patient pathway • To offer advice and health education as appropriate • Enable patients to carry out self-care as appropriate, through effective communication of health care advice. • Following agreed Patient Group Directions administer simple analgesics to patients whilst awaiting senior clinical review if clinically indicated. • Recognize the acutely ill patient and the need for urgent/emergency treatment acting appropriately with other clinical support as required • Identify any safeguarding concerns and make appropriate referrals following safeguarding processes • To be committed to working in a changing environment, responding positively to new demands and changes and to be willing to be flexible to the changing needs of the service • To promote and facilitate audit and research-based practice as required • To direct patients appropriately to the right professional within appropriate time frame • To assess and priorities presenting patients in terms of acuity whilst maintaining patient safety at all times. • To undertake ECGs, chaperoning and other tasks as requested by colleagues, this is not an exhaustive list. • To support clinicians and other members of the team to ensure timely care to patients. We are seeking a highly creative psychologist with a range of clinical and leadership experience to join our Psychiatric Liaison Service in Luton.



The post holder will contribute a psychological perspective to multidisciplinary service development and delivery within the general acute hospital and A&E settings. This will include reviewing pathways to meet the needs of our service users, enabling the team to meet the standards for a Core 24 service. You will be part of the PLS Leadership team.

Clinical work focuses both on complex health presentations from the general acute hospital as well as service users with severe mental health difficulties and high risk presenting in crisis to A&E. Clinical work on the hospital side is varied, including service users with eating disorders, FND, MUS, depression and anxiety, as well as those who are experiencing long hospital stays in the face of multiple physical and mental health issues. There are opportunities to develop joint work with health disciplines across the hospital, and to devise training programmes for the general wards. On the A&E side, we offer a ‘follow-up psychology clinic’ for those who have presented with an attempt on their life and need brief psychological support to stabilise and prevent future suicide.
