The Opportunity:

This position is affiliated with the UKRI APRIL AI Hub that aspires to develop AI tools to accelerate innovation across semiconductor technologies, novel microchip designs and system architectures – leading to faster, cheaper, greener and overall, more power-efficient electronics. As one of nine UKRI funded AI Hubs, this is a highly visible programme both nationally and internationally.



The post-holder will work closely with a team of talented researchers and the APRIL operations team to support the development of novel AI capabilities, tools and methodologies that can enhance the productivity of engineers in designing, developing and testing advanced electronic devices and systems. More specifically, the post-holder will be able to develop and introduce AI tools into commercially available circuit design tools that can autonomously synthetise circuits and systems architectures. The aim is to drastically reduce the design time and optimise the transfer of known topologies into new CMOS technologies.



The post-holder will have the ability to engage with world-leading experts across AI and electronics both at Edinburgh and in other UK higher education (HE) institutions but also industrial partners to ensure relevance of their Research in addressing state-of-art challenges in electronics.



The successful candidate will have excellent communication, organisation, and technical skills. They will enjoy working in a dynamic environment and be able to work on their own initiative as well as being an active team member. The role will report to the APRIL Hub Director (Principal Investigator), with on-going engagement with other researchers in the Hub as well as academic leads.

This role is UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis for up to 60 months.

Your skills and attributes for success:

The role-holder will also be available to advise on stock and non-stock items and to process purchase requisitions.

You should be qualified to HND level or have equivalent experience in a relevant area including experience in the safe operation and basic maintenance of A/V & A/V related equipment: video cameras, DSLRs, audio recorders & microphones, tripods & stands, projectors, media players, etc. with an understanding of the creative use of this equipment.

Role

• Ensuring an understanding of project briefs. Design and specification of all Mechanical Building Services systems.
• Preparation and review of documentation eg designs, specifications, assessment reports, survey reports.
• Carry out (managing of others) in the production of detailed calculations using industry standard software tools including Excel, CAD, IES, in house developed tools etc
• Site surveys, inspections and monitoring of site works
• Implementation of detailed surveys of mechanical services and equipment to establish status of the existing installations and gain sufficient information to recommend new/upgrade design proposal
• Assisting with the development of junior engineers
• Report and technical note writing

Qualfications / Experience

• Degree qualified or equivalent qualification in Building Services Engineering / Mechanical Engineering
• Ideally chartered or working towards this with CIBSE or IET.
• 5-10 years experience working in a design consultancy or a similar environment.
• Knowledge of mechanical design within the built environment.
• Good report writing skills, experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with clients.
• Detailed knowledge of appropriate technical standards, able to take charge of project deliverable, make decisions, act on own initiative.
• Good level of computer literacy in a range of digital tools such as IES thermal modelling package, Microscoft packages, CAD

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer will ensure that works are designed to minimize risks during the construction, operation, maintenance and decommissioning/demolition phases. With responsibility to ensure that all designs meet regulatory, statutory, client and industry requirements.

Your role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, including sales, tendering and project managers, to deliver high-quality products on time and within budget.

* Initial and ongoing liaison with the client to establish the design parameters.
* Liaising with the DNO and adopting IDNO to obtain design approval.
* Establish sufficient relevant information to carry out risk assessments in relation to the network type and construction methods to be incorporated into the design.
* Design and develop electrical network and create detailed electrical schematics and diagrams.
* Design the network using design tools such as AutoCAD / Windebut / Castline, selecting the correct demand/voltage and thus the network routing, terminations and any requirement for switchgear etc. Create detailed electrical schematics and diagrams.
* Maintaining a record of the progress of each design project in respect of design progress, communication and notices/applications/forms etc.
* Ensure design is legally compliant and if third party land access required provide information to allow wayleaves/servitudes to be agreed.
* Stay up-to-date with advancements in electrical engineering and Incorporate new technologies into designs.
* Where necessary check designs and drawings completed by others
* Create & deliver the information required to make clients aware of their responsibilities.
* Carry out a hand-over meeting and provide operations with enough information to execute the work safely.
* Respond to requests for variations to the design and process these in accordance with agreed procedures.
* Produce cost estimates in line with current commercial procedures

Electrical Design Engineer - Skills & Experience:

* Electrical Qualification (ONC Level or Higher in Electrical Engineering or Equivalent)
* MIET membership
* Relevant Electrical Industry experience for the last 3 years working as a Design Engineer on HV & LV Distribution Networks.
