Do you want to turn your passion for engineering design into a rewarding career? Our 4-year apprenticeship gives you hands-on CAD experience creating advanced designs for the Royal Navy fleet.

About the programme:
This is no ordinary engineering apprenticeship. As a design and draughtsperson, you'll produce detailed drawings, models and specs to guide the manufacture and maintenance of state-of-the-art maritime vessels and infrastructure.

Focusing on electrical, mechanical or structural design, you'll work on varied projects including submarine and warship refits. Using the latest CAD software and following codes and standards, you'll help to solve real-world engineering challenges.

You'll gain a broad range of skills including:

• Interpreting technical specifications.
• Assessing design factors and constraints.
• Creating CAD models and drawings.
• Evaluating and refining designs.
• Communicating options to stakeholders.

You'll also have the opportunity to embark on work placements across the site, gaining valuable insights into various operations from a design perspective.

Your education/training:
You'll spend an initial period of time at City College, Plymouth, learning the basics. In year 4, you'll be fully immersed, solving challenges alongside experienced designers.

Along the way, you'll study towards a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering to complement your on-the-job training.

Future prospects:
On finishing your apprenticeship, you'll be ready to start an exciting career as an Engineering Design and Draughtsperson, supporting the Royal Navy's fleet.

As a Creative Arts Therapist, what does a typical week look like for you? With us, your day would start with a morning briefing, where you'll share updates and hear about the impactful work being done throughout our Integrated Therapy team.

You'll play an active role in delivering training sessions to our teaching teams, exploring creative activities that enhance learning, and sharing invaluable insights from pupils. To be a successful Creative Arts Therapist, you’ll need:

- A recognised Post Graduate qualification in Art Therapy/Music Therapy or Drama Therapy along with HCPC Registration.
- Great experience working as a Creative Arts Therapist.
- The desire and confidence to run supervisions and offer training and support to other Psychological Therapists.

The Design and Technology department at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School is a well-resourced and modern department. It comprises 3, fully-equipped teaching areas, a new food room, 2 computer suites incorporating 2 laser cutters, and a technicians’ room. There is a dedicated sixth-form engineering area that contains CNC machines and a 3D printer.

Staff currently deliver the full D&T curriculum to all year groups and are adaptable to cover all aspects of the syllabus.

Students have the opportunity to study a rich and challenging curriculum where they experience first-hand a range of techniques and processes through a series of design-and-make units. Digital technology is a key element in many of the units utilising CAD CAM to design, develop and manufacture as well as incorporating embedded micro controllers.

At KS3, the curriculum helps prepare students to be independent, critical thinkers who can adapt their knowledge and understanding to different design situations. There is a healthy uptake for GCSE Design and Technology (OCR J310) where students engage in challenging systems-based project work. Pupils can progress further and take A-level D&T (OCR Design Engineering H404 or Product Design H406). Throughout this course, students are given opportunities to become more independent learners to prepare them for their ongoing careers. The school is affiliated with Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme and all Technology students in year 11 are encouraged to apply for this prestigious award.

The role

As a Senior Naval Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll support complex shipbuilding programmes, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.

Day-to-day, you'll be responsible for authoring, reviewing, and substantiating marine designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning, and diagnostic test support.

• Contribute and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs.
• Act as Technical Authority and have deep subject knowledge of an aspect of marine engineering.
• Preparation and production of substantiation reports for marine solutions throughout the entire design lifecycle phases (Concept, Basic, Functional, Detail, Manufacturing, Installation and Decommissioning), in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
• Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries.

As a Principal Naval Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary.

Day to day, you'll serve a pivotal role in the delivery of the core Warship Technical Authority outputs, responsible for interpreting customer requirements, setting and implementing constructive repair policy and leading and supporting two highly anticipated transformation projects.

• You'll provide provision of technical advice to MoD authorities and Service Providers to ensure platform capability is functional and available.
• Manage and coordinate Classification Society activities to ensure platforms remain in class.

• Completing technical investigations that support the capability and availability of warships.

The role
As a Business Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary, working with customers across the defence sector and the naval marine domain in particular.

• Contribution to the selection/definition of context-appropriate architectural meta-models including industry standard (e.g. Archimate), extended/adapted and bespoke.
• Analysis of current and future business (process and organisation), information and applications to create associated architectural models and viewpoints. This will involve bottom-up analysis of physical artefacts (e.g. database schema) and review of documentation (e.g. quality management systems, specifications, etc.) supported by interviews and workshops with subject matter experts.
• Development of 'as-is' and 'to-be' architectures to support assessment of solution options and transformation programme/portfolio management.
• Liaison with internal and customer leadership in a consultative capacity to assist in development and communication of transformation strategy.
• Application of systems thinking and architectural principles to support project teams with development of user requirements, system requirements and solution specifications including high level designs and functional specifications etc.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements.

Essential experience of the Business Architect

• Excellent communication skills, able to distil and convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
• Able to guide and influence customer understanding and thinking.
• Significant practical experience of the application of model driven architecture (framework agnostic) in support of business transformation.
• Able to guide and lead less experienced team members in model driven architecture.
• Domain experience in engineering and asset management preferably the context of any of naval marine, defence equipment and support and nuclear (defence and civil).
• Must be a professional, self-starter able to take responsibility for their own work without reliance on direct guidance and close supervision.
