The Greater Manchester Combined Authority is looking for dedicated and extraordinary individuals to join our army of Volunteer Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs) visiting police custody suites and speaking to detainees across Greater Manchester to ensure they receive fair and equal treatment under the law.

About the Role

ICVs are members of the local community who volunteer to visit police stations unannounced to make an inspection and check on the treatment and welfare of people held in police custodies across Greater Manchester. They look at a number of issues, from the treatment of detainees and behavior of custody staff, to the effectiveness of custody processes.

On arrival at the police station, ICVs are escorted to the custody area where they interview a number of detainees in their cells and complete a structured report form. For visitors’ protection, interviews are normally carried out within sight, but out of hearing, of the escorting police officer. ICV recommendations can require the police to make improvements for the welfare of detainees and, therefore, they play a valuable role in maintaining public confidence in this important area of policing.

Training

ICV’s are required to attend seven mandatory training sessions to fulfill their role. Further optional training sessions are available, for example on topics including substance misuse, mental health, interview skills, and dementia. The posts are voluntary and unpaid, but all travelling expenses are reimbursed.

Greater Manchester Combined Authority is responsible for recruiting, selecting and appointing all custody visitors. To be eligible as an ICV volunteer, you must be 18 years of age, or older, and have no direct involvement in the criminal justice system. For example, serving or retired police officers or staff, special constables or magistrates would NOT be considered for the role. Other people, such as solicitors or probation officers may also be excluded to prevent possible conflict of interests for the individual. This maintains the independence of the scheme as a whole. Appointment as an independent custody visitor is subject to a successful application and interview process.

What will you be doing as a Claims Handler:
Working as part of a team, you will deal with a mixture of commercial and personal lines insurance claims. Duties include:

• Reviewing and assessing insurance claims across different products to determine coverage and liability
• Acknowledging all new claims to both clients and insurers and keeping clients updated
• Investigating and gathering evidence to support claims decisions
• Negotiating with claimants, insurers and others to reach settlements
• Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all claims activities
• Mentoring and providing guidance to other claims handlers
• Preparing claims reports to be presented by Account Executives on larger cases

• Strong experience in claims handling, ideally in a similar commercial Claims Handler role
• Exceptional customer care skills
• Confident with excellent negotiation skills
• Very strong attention to detail
• Comfortable with Word, Excel and Outlook

About The Trainee Financial Analyst Role:
Working as part of a busy team, you will assist with assessment, analysis and reporting of data captured by the company with primary focus on financial data and reporting. Duties will include:

• Assisting with the maintenance and improvement of existing performance reports and Microsoft Power BI dashboards
• Working with the management to identify areas for better performance management information and developing new reports and dashboards as required
• Assisting with updating and co-ordinating monthly financial reports in Excel

• Co-ordinating and assisting with the capture and storage of data to assist in performance reporting

• Ideally a university graduate with a relevant degree finance or business management based degree or possibly a part qualified CIMA Accountant looking for a move to a ccommercial role
• Strong skills in Excel
• Ideally some experience of Microsoft Power BI although training will be provided
• A logical, inquisitive and problem-solving mindset
