Looking for a clinical fellow to help support the General Surgery Department, commencing in colorectal surgery.

The Unit is a busy tertiary referral centre with a catchment area of approximately 3.7 million in the central south coast of England. The Southampton Colorectal unit consists of 12 Consultant Surgeons (2 academic, and 10 NHS consultants).

This senior level position will be held in the Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton General Hospital. This is a recently constructed, dedicated research building that is the result of a significant fund-raising campaign. It builds on a 40 year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton, and represents the first dedicated cancer immunology centre in the UK. The activities in this centre span from pioneering discovery science to applied research and preclinical modelling and, crucially, onto first-in-human clinical trials and beyond. The centre houses world-class research facilities, including state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and a clinical trials unit.

The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Sally Ward and Raimund Ober. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the use of protein engineering to develop novel antibody-based therapeutics that has led to several therapeutics that are currently approved for clinical use or in advanced stages of clinical trials. The group is also actively involved in the development of advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of novel therapeutics in cellular environments. Their interdisciplinary research is funded by major grants from the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharma companies.

The appointee will oversee in vitro and in vivo cellular assays, including immunological assays. The appointee is expected to have an outstanding track record in analysing the behaviour of antibody or other protein-based therapeutics using mouse models. Knowledge of in vitro cellular assays, including assessment of immunological responses and advanced flow cytometry analyses is required. A background in expressing and purifying recombinant proteins/antibodies is also desirable but not essential. An ability to independently manage research projects is also required.

The appointee will also play a supervisory role, and will be responsible for the research activities of junior technicians in related projects in the laboratory. The ability to train other members of the laboratory in immunological and in vivo techniques is a requirement of the position. The research projects involve teamwork between laboratory members carrying out molecular and cellular analyses through to studies in mouse models of disease. The appointee will therefore be expected to enjoy working as a team member who plays a central role in the research productivity of the group.

The position offers ample opportunities for professional development and career advancement, and pursuit of these by the appointee will be actively encouraged and supported. For example, the research projects related to therapeutic development are closely aligned with the interests of biopharma, providing possibilities for close interactions with this sector.

The Oncology Pharmacy service provides a range of systemic anti-cancer therapies to both adult and paediatric inpatients and outpatients. The year is divided up into 4 x3 month positions to ensure a complete exposure to the range of Paediatric Orthopaedics. The fellows attend outpatient clinics, operating lists and manage the ward inpatients. In addition, fellows are expected to contribute to the teaching programme as well as M&M meetings. Outpatient clinics are held within a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic area which is supported by plaster room and orthotics within the same clinic area. We run a number of peripheral clinics held in the district general hospitals across the south coast area but fellows currently remain onsite at UHS. Surgery is carried out in a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic theatre. Fellows are expected to have reviewed the cases preoperatively, mark and consent in conjunction with the consultant and the anaesthetist. All inpatients MUST be reviewed every day by at least one fellow along with the orthopaedic trainees, ward doctor and ward based nurse practitioner. The postholder is on call weekends 1 in 5. There are no on call duties Monday to Friday. Emergency admissions occur via Emergency Department, regional referral and the paediatric medical admissions unit. WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic fellow with a proven interest in paediatric orthopaedics and with a long term career aim as an orthopaedic consultant with paediatric orthopaedics a significant part of their practice. Applicants would ideally have obtained their CCST (Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training) and be listed on the GMC register.
