Research Assistant/Associate Policy Analyst – Population Health

The Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate Policy Analyst. The rapid population ageing in Singapore calls for innovative solutions. We aim to assess the impact of health promotion programmes (e.g. urban care farming, cognition training, etc) on the health and health-related behaviours of participants. This project will involve recruitment, assessment, and analysis of the research data. The candidate will also be working on models in policy evaluation. This is a full-time position based in Singapore.

Duties may include but are not limited to: (1) provide programming support to a research project (2) assist with recruitment and data analyses; (3) manage large complex databases; (4) conduct literature reviews (5) contribute to the development of scientific papers and the dissemination of the study findings.

The appointed candidate should: (1) Hold at least a bachelor degree (2) be proficient in Stata or R and (3) have experience in statistics, mathematics, econometrics, computer science, quantitative social science, public health, epidemiology or related field. Experience with C++ is preferred but not required.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to query large data sets and have excellent knowledge of quantitative methods in applied health and/or social sciences. Fluency in English, as well as demonstrably good writing and analytic skills are essential. The Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) performs a variety of administrative functions associated with patient care in the community. In this position the incumbent will serve as the primary trainer for all MSAs assigned to the Community Care department. The incumbent will also be responsible for ensuring timely coordination of patient care in the community. As such, the incumbent must have knowledge of VA policies, regulations, guidelines and processes as they relate to patient scheduling practices, consult management, dialysis contracting, and both inpatient and outpatient authorizations for care. The Singapore Population Health Studies (SPHS) is a population-based health research initiative at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore. SPHS aims to investigate the interactions between lifestyle, physiological, genetic and other omics biomarkers and their impact on health and longevity. In addition, SPHS will serve as a platform to monitor risk factors in the population and gain insight into determinants of health-related behaviours. For this purpose, SPHS includes over 50,000 adult Singaporeans and long-term residents from three major ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, and Indian), for a better understanding of disease aetiology in urban Asian settings, and the development of improved preventive and therapeutic measures for Singapore and other Asian populations.

JOB PURPOSE
This role primarily involves the recruitment and data collection activities of the public health research projects under the SPHS unit that will contribute towards the building of a population health biobank for Singapore.

Duties & Responsibilities
1. Inviting target participants as defined above to take part in the relevant study by phone call or messaging;
2. Screening their eligibility for the study and making an appointment with them for the study procedures;
3. Provide logistical information for the interview and study site visit;
4. Manage participant flow at the study site visit and verify the participants' survey completion status;
5. Explaining the information in the study consent documents to the extent that the consent, if given, would be informed and voluntary;
6. Obtaining participants’ consent before beginning any study procedures;
7. Interview participants according to the e-questionnaire and entering the responses accurately to the e-questionnaire via a tablet;
8. Timely completion of interview and registration of participants for their study site visit procedures before the cut-off time;
9. Timely preparation of required material and equipment for the study site visits;
10. Organise work outputs to be handed over to the QC supervisor; and
11. Any other responsibilities as required by future research projects.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Post-secondary qualifications with a good command of spoken English and Malay/Tamil/Mandarin/Cantonese/Hokkien/Teochew (to conduct interview with health research participants in local ethnic languages)
• At least 2 years of customer-facing work experience.
• Work hours are: 7.30am to 5.15pm on Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri; 7.30am to 12.30pm on either Sat or Wed depending on operation days of the study site.
• Comfortable with using a tablet for data entry, retrieve and update records.

Job Description:

Applications are invited for the following full-time position in the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS):

Research Assistant (1 year)

We are looking for a full-time research assistant to support an MOE-funded research project on cancer and public health. The successful candidate will work closely with the principal investigator and a team of cancer clinicians and researchers, and will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in socio-behavioural research to improve cancer care.

Responsibilities:

• Assist with the administration and management of research projects, including coordinating the research team’s meetings and activities and preparing the research ethics application.
• Conduct research fieldwork, including recruiting participants, coordinating interview schedules, administering informed consent forms, conducting qualitative interviews and transcribing interviews verbatim.
• Conduct qualitative data analysis, and work with the research team in preparing research reports/manuscripts.

Requirements:

• Excellent academic writing and communication skills in English.
• Experience of successfully managing multiple tasks concurrently.
• Some qualitative research skills and experience, including at least some experience with conducting semi-structured interviews and/or analysing qualitative data and interest in learning how to conduct socio-behavioural research in cancer care.
• Highly organized and able to work effectively under pressure, use independent judgement, produce high-quality quality work, and problem solve within time constraints.
• Able to work independently as well as with a team.

Desirable:

• Degree or relevant experience in social science methodology or health care.
• Experience with Atlas.ai/NVivo and R or similar software to manage qualitative data or the interest to learn.
• Experience in conducting qualitative interviews.
• Able to speak Mandarin/Chinese dialects or Malay/Tamil is an advantage as some research participants may only speak their mother tongue.

Duties will vary by patient care unit/department and include but are not limited to: Providing personal hygiene care, assisting with nutritional needs, providing comfort care and other assistance, appropriately and safely transferring patients, taking vital signs and completing recordkeeping, recognizing and promptly reporting changes in patient condition to the RN, and maintaining a safe, clean environment for patients to promote the healing process. Works within job scope to meet the requirements of the Joint Commission and other applicable federal, state and local regulatory and accrediting agencies.
