The Associate Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Quality and Patient Safety (Associate DUSH for QPS) is a direct report to the Deputy Under Secretary for Health (DUSH) and supports the overall work of the Office of the Under Secretary for Health (USH). The Associate DUSH for QPS provides national leadership in the formulation and establishment of effective health care policies, programs, and initiatives that fulfill the VHA's mission to provide personalized, pro-active, high quality, safe, reliable care for Veterans. The Associate DUSH for QPS is responsible for leading VHA on its journey toward becoming a high reliability organization and has oversight of VHA's performance measurement, quality and process improvement, safety, clinical risk management, systems redesign, accreditation, and data analytics and reporting programs. The Associate Director Education supports the Deputy Director and the Senior Consultant for Operations in overseeing SPP Education and is responsible for coordinating and supporting VHA's National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide and develops national suicide prevention training and education as well as recommends policy, programming and planning actions, and strategic guidance for suicide prevention for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Associate Director Education provides support to the operationalization of the VA's 10-year National Strategy and its four major domains (Healthy & Empowered Communities, Clinical & Community Prevention Services, Treatment & Support Services, Surveillance, Research & Evaluation) through the SP NOW initiative.

The incumbent is responsible for the advancement of the translation of new suicide prevention initiatives into educational resources across the VA system and works closely with the Rocky Mountain MIRECC and VISN 2 CoE for Suicide Prevention in the translation process. The Associate Director Education is responsible for ensuring national rollout of initiatives are in alignment with implementation science principles and include interface with a wide range of clinical and administrative offices within VHA. • Collaborate with treatment teams to develop a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment and a discharge plan for Veterans treated in the Emergency Department.
• Referrals for surrogate decision makers, guardianship and/or payee services, as recommended by the interdisciplinary team.
• Responsible for using the current social work resource file of VA and community social service programs and enhancing the content to the benefit of Veterans.

• Experienced in completing rapid assessments and developing crisis management plans for admission to mental health inpatient programs.

• Triage Veterans that present to the Emergency Department for mental health evaluations and/or psychosocial related needs.
• Conducts biopsychosocial assessment of the Veteran in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members and significant others.
• Performs case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening Veterans for psychosocial and mental health needs.
• Completes Comprehensive Suicide Risk Assessments, Homicidal Risk Assessments, and Safety Plans for Veterans presenting with suicidal ideation or behaviors in alignment with established policy/procedures.
• Identifies low, moderate and high-risk patients, provides interim case management services with referral for continuity of care.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary team for consultation regarding treatment and disposition for patients in the ED.
• Provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates family conferences and serves as liaison to family members.
• Working knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.
