In preparation for LSTM’s REF2029 submission, we are looking to appoint a Senior Research Excellence and Strategy Manager to join our Office for Research Strategy and Knowledge Exchange within our professional services function.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad range activities including all aspects of REF (Research Excellence Framework) including providing advice, leadership, coordination, compliance, quality and submission. This post will also hold responsibility for providing research strategy insights, in addition to contributing the LSTM funder engagement strategy.

This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Head of Research Strategy & Knowledge Exchange in helping to shape a brand-new department. The post will also support the research committee Chair and leadership of the Secretariat, with the ultimate shared goal of creating an optimal research innovation ecosystem to deliver LSTM’s mission, whilst building on LSTM’s world-class reputation.

Key responsibilities will include:


Strategy Development




Working with the Head of the Research Strategy & Knowledge Exchange to provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the research strategy, fostering a collaborative and innovative approach.
Lead, advise and support as domain expert user within LSTM’s Research Information System.
Manage the relevant delivery priorities of the broader Office for Research Strategy and Knowledge Exchange team to sector-leading standards, ensuring a high quality, focussed and fully compliant service is provided.





Research Excellence Framework (REF)

Adopt the role of LSTM’s trusted REF (Research Excellence Framework) advisor, providing professional management of REF submissions and all subsequent exercises, including supporting the leadership team with the development and implementation of REF strategies.
Analyse, interpret and adopt external guidance and policy, highlighting potential risk and exposure of the organisation and developing appropriate mitigations.




Research Environment & Strategy

Lead regular dialogue and liaison with department heads, global hubs, faculty members and international partners to understand the research needs of the academic community
Develop and implement effective research horizon scanning, intelligence gathering and a strategic funder engagement approach.




External Engagement:

Support the Head of Research Strategy & Knowledge Exchange and senior academics to represent LSTM at relevant national and international forums related to research and knowledge exchange excellence, sharing best practices, and establishing collaborative networks.
Contribute and quality assure information/data returns for relevant Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), including developing local processes to gather appropriate information.



The successful candidate will bring:


Knowledge and experience of research within a higher education context, including REF and/or KEF and Research, Culture and Environment
Significant involvement in previous REF submissions
Knowledge and understanding of relevant funding bodies, their practice and strategic priorities
An excellent understanding of broader national policy priorities in relation to research and knowledge exchange
Experience in a senior research management or planning role in the higher education sector
The ability to assess research performance at all levels of institutional organisation, ensuring responsible use of metrics
Experience of the research cycle, in particular horizon scanning and funder engagement
Educated to degree level or equivalent

Finance Manager
IVCC (Innovative Vector Control Consortium)

Based in Liverpool, hybrid working with 3 days per week based on-site

IVCC was incorporated in 2008 and is hosted by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Our program of work is supported by a wide range of funders including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, FCDO, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), USAID and DFAT (Australian Government).

IVCC partners with third party organisations (industry and academic) to support the development of new vector control products in the fight against malaria, in order to save lives and increase prosperity for some of the poorest communities in the world, which is the vision IVCC strives for.

We have a brand-new role for an additional Finance Manager to join the team, who will serve as a key financial contact, with responsibility for providing a broad range of financial deliverables associated with IVCC’s grant and institution finances.

Working closely with the IVCC and LSTM finance teams, the Finance Manager will be responsible for implementing and ensuring compliance with finance-related policies and procedures, financial monitoring and funder reporting.

Responsibilities include:


Fully understand IVCC’s finance strategy, its purpose and internal/external stakeholders involved in its implementation
Facilitate the integration of the new finance system (OneFinance) and work with the IVCC finance team, administrators and project managers to leverage the capabilities of the system
Maintain a structure of project reporting that enables the tracking and reporting of activity against all projects and grants
Facilitate the development of automated reports, strong financial controls and risk management
Conduct a regular review of expenditure across designated accounts for corporate reporting, in conjunction with variance analysis by budget line, to confirm progress, gain understanding of any anomalies and take action to remedy any issues arising
Report on IVCC’s cash flow in relation to designated projects
Monitor funders’ financial requirements to ensure compliance
Verify and approve partner payments as required


Develop strong links to designated portfolio teams, departments and project teams to support their financial requirements
Support the Senior Finance Manager in the delivery of annual budgets, quarterly reforecasting exercises and 5-year strategic planning
Ensure maximisation of internal costs, core salaries and overheads
Implement and maintain KPI’s and metrics to monitor performance against strategic objectives
Support the finalisation of the financial aspects of grant submissions
Support the production of the financial sections to a range of funder reporting publications, including annual funder and grant progress reports

The ideal candidate will possess the following:


Qualified (CIMA, ACCA, ACA) or qualified by experience

Experience in long-term contract accounting, such as grant financial management or other project-based accounting

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Clinical Sciences team as a Clinical Trials Data Coordinator/Data Manager. The role will be based at the Global Health Trial Unit, undertaking data management projects to ensure the unit delivers high quality research whilst maintaining excellent standards and practice.

As Clinical Trials Data Manager/Coordinator, you will work in close partnership with the GHTU team in close communication with Chief/Principal Investigators and will be responsible for all aspects of the data management process, including development of project documentation, database set-up, overseeing and support data collection and validation, data administration, archiving and sharing.

Your responsibilities will include:

General data management:

Providing data management input on CRFs and contributing to the development of trial databases and eCRFs for studies.
Performing QC checks and Database Quality Assessments on clinical databases.
Monitoring data for consistency and acceptability, reconciling data from external sources/relational databases.
Extracting and preparing data subsets and deriving variables for statistical analysis, and following procedures for the storage, archiving and recovery of data.


Study involvement:

Liaising with Chief/Principal investigators and statisticians to establish, align and confirm data management expectations.
Assisting study teams to monitor the status of participant data, and helping the team develop and review trial documentation related to data management.
Working with study teams to review, analyse and validate clinical trial data to ensure consistency, integrity and accuracy.
Supporting the production of regular reports (such as data entry and query progress of studies).


GHTU support:

Preparing data management documentation and drafting project specific documents for trials (including Data Management Plans for grant applications).
Planning and tracking content, format and quality of data management deliverables, including CRF design, data validation, data quality assessment, database lock, final datasets and archiving.
Managing and updating medical coding dictionaries such as MedDRA and WHODrug.
Working closely with other members within GHTU to develop internal processes, and training staff to ensure compliance and best practice adhered to.

Qualifications and skills required:


A degree or equivalent qualification in a biomedical/scientific/statistical or allied field, or commensurate experience in clinical trial delivery
Strong self-sufficiency and initiative working on MSSQL database [Data Manager]
Evidence of training in Good Clinical Practice
Programming experience in data management such as MS access, Excel
Programming experience in data management such as MS SQL, SAS, Stata, etc [Data Manager]
Experience of working in clinical trials, with a particular experience of working with clinical data and a good understanding of CRF design and management.
Experience in developing reports using MSSQL scripts and Microsoft business reporting tools.

The Department of Vector Biology at LSTM is one of the largest of its kind with a broad portfolio of research and technical assistance activities targeted at improving the control of insect borne diseases. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Research Technician to join this dynamic research team.

The successful candidate will provide molecular biology, and insectary support to research projects performing functional genetics in mosquitoes, particularly towards the study of insecticide resistance. Your role will involve supporting researchers in the group by using molecular biology, CRISPR genome editing and general genetic manipulation techniques to characterise and manipulate the mosquito genome.


Key responsibilities (but not limited to):



Prepare and maintain adequate laboratory records of methods, sample details and results
Provide an efficient and effective technical service to research teams
Undertake general plasmid cloning and screening procedures
Perform basic bioinformatic analysis and plasmid and primer design
Inject mosquito embryos with DNA constructs
Assist in the design of guide RNAs for CRISPR-based genome editing
Assist with the rearing of uninfected mosquito colonies in the insectaries
Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and risk assessments
Collate and assess data using excel, prism and other appropriate software



The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as an integral and flexible member of fast-paced multi-disciplinary research team. Ideally, we are seeking a candidate that can demonstrate on their CV and application a combination of the below:


BSc in Biological Science or science related subject (or equivalent experience)

The successful candidate will join a collaborative research team (also including Fabrice Graf, LSTM, Dept Clinical Sciences; Eva Heinz, University of Strathclyde; Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, NHS) investigating the key factors that influence transposon mediated beta-lactamase gene amplification, which has been identified as a key driver of resistance to beta-lactamase inhibitor combination therapies. The successful candidate will use a mixture of microbiological assays, cloning, qPCR, and whole genome sequencing in order to determine to what extent the organism sequence type, transposon type, or AMR gene impact the likelihood and extent of gene amplification whilst under selective pressure. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and passionate Research Assistant to join our team in the Tropical Disease Biology department in advancing snakebite research and interventions.
Our Tropical Disease Biology (TDB) department is a leading national and international research and teaching department with a focus on translational research of tropical infectious diseases. The vision of TDB is aligned to that of LSTM’s to “save lives in resource poor countries through research, education and capacity strengthening”. To that end, research within the TDB department is focused on solutions that have the potential to have a material impact the health and well-being of people from resource poor settings.
<u>The Role </u>

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting new research enabling LSTM’s Centre for Snakebite Research & Interventions (CSRI). Led by Director Professor Nicholas Casewell, the research centre boasts some of the world's leading snakebite experts and has access to LSTM’s herpetarium, the largest and most diverse collection of tropical venomous snakes in the UK, used to support its research activities. The post holder will primarily be expected to characterise the coagulopathic and platelet-perturbing activity of haemotoxic snake venom proteins, to support the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for the field of thrombosis and haemostasis. Based within the CSRI, this post will join a substantial, multi-disciplinary research team dedicated to identifying and implementing systems and tools to understand snake venoms and improve the treatment of tropical snakebite. The research position will focus predominately on defining the bioactivity of snake venom toxins on clotting factors and platelets, with the goal of identifying tools that could be repurposed for use as clotting test standards and/or therapeutics for thrombotic disorders.





Key deliverables will include (but not be limited to):


Assist in the development and/or optimization of coagulation factor specific bioassays to define toxin activities
Perform well-plate, aggregometry and/or flow cytometry-based platelet function assays to quantify toxin activity and define mechanisms of action on platelet aggregation
Undertake one-stage clotting assays on normal and factor deficient plasma
Assist in the purification of snake toxin proteins from native venom
Perform data analysis on experimental results and deliver reports to the supervisory team
Maintain accurate records of all research activity
Work collaboratively in a research team and in partnership with external collaborators
Contribute to the publication of research outcomes in appropriate peer reviewed journals and relevant grant writing activities
Participate in related scientific and public engagement tasks


<u>The Candidate </u>

The post-holder will be expected to have a background in either haematology or biochemistry, and experience of protein purification is desirable. You will support our research initiatives by conducting literature reviews, collecting and analysing data, and contribute to the preparation of reports and publications.

Our Finance team have recently rolled-out a brand new SaaS finance system to improve efficiency across the organisation. The initial feedback about this project has been excellent, and to support with embedding this system fully, we have created a brand-new opportunity for a Senior Finance System Administrator to join the team on a fixed-term contract, who will be instrumental in ensuring its success.

As a Senior Finance System Administrator, you will work closely with the Finance Systems Manager to proactively maintain and develop the use of LSTM Group’s core finance system and associated software. We are looking for someone who is solution focused with the technical and communication skills to lead change effectively and support colleagues on that journey.

Key responsibilities will include:


Undertake extensive and detailed troubleshooting and testing to investigate system issues, identifying solutions to minimise service disruption.
Day-to-day system support and system administration tasks, ensuring that SLA’s are met, and an outstanding customer service is provided.
Ownership of the development and maintenance of system business processes, understanding stakeholder and operational needs.
Co-ordinate workload and issue prioritisation within the team to reduce risk and provide an excellent customer service.
Proactively identify opportunities to enhance financial processes through system improvements and automation.
Create an established feedback process gathering and analysing data to establish a development of work.
Foster excellent business relationships with colleagues, suppliers and system users to enhance user experience.
Work alongside the Finance Systems Manager to plan and deliver an accessible training schedule for the LSTM group.


We are looking for a proactive individual who will ideally bring the following:


Experience of maintaining and developing finance systems.
Knowledge of underpinning technical infrastructure of finance systems and how accounts are compiled.
Proven experience in administering and optimizing integrated systems.
The ability to effectively troubleshoot, taking ownership for issues until resolution.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Finance Systems Administrator

LSTM is on a journey of transformation to ensure we evolve and continue to be leaders within our field and as we do this, we need to make sure we have the infrastructure to support such change within our professional services departments.

Our Finance department is looking to appoint a Finance Systems Administrator to join the team, and this role will be pivotal in the operation and advancement of our new ‘OneFinance’ system and associated software.

As a Finance Systems Administrator, you will be entrusted with decision making, advising stakeholders, evaluating processes and troubleshooting to ensure seamless operations, and drive continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities will include:

Finance System maintenance and support:

Take ownership of day-to-day system support and administration tasks, ensuring adherence to SLAs and delivering outstanding customer service.
Lead initial troubleshooting efforts to investigate system issues, exercising judgement to resolve or escalate as necessary.
Assume responsibility for setting up user access and permissions.
Support the Finance Systems Manager in the development, maintenance, and administration of OneFinance forms and business processes.

Finance System development and continuous improvement:

Proactively identify opportunities for process enhancement through system improvements and automation.
Assist in systems testing following supplier upgrades, identify issues and potential solutions, working with the supplier to resolve issues.
Work alongside the Senior Finance Systems Administrator to establish support desk KPI’s and subsequent reporting.

Business Partnering:

Cultivate business relationships with colleagues, suppliers and system users to elevate user experience, providing guidance and advice.
Actively participate in supplier groups, leveraging insights to inform system enhancements.

Training/facilitation:

Identify training needs and develop comprehensive content to address skill gaps.
Provide effective training and support to end-users.

Audit and compliance:

Collaborating effectively with colleagues to support the provision of information for audits and other due diligence compliance requirements.
Conduct regular system audits, identifying and resolving discrepancies to ensure data consistency and process compliance.


We are looking for a proactive individual who will ideally bring the following:


Experience of being the first point of contact of systems support helpdesk.
Demonstrable experience of maintaining and developing systems including system administration and support, user management, system monitoring, and security administration.
Proficiency in troubleshooting system issues and implementing effective solutions.
Experience with system testing upgrades, and implementation of process enhancements.
Proven track record of effectively collaborating with colleagues to drive system and process improvements.
Advanced excel skills and knowledge of BI reporting including ETL’s, SQL and Data Warehouse would also be advantageous, but this is not essential.
