We are currently looking for Level 1 Teaching Assistants to join our successful Achievement Support team, supporting the learning and wellbeing of SEND and Pupil Premium students. We have one full time and one part time (3 days per week) position available.

In this role you will help students to understand instructions and support the independent learning and inclusion of all pupils. You will support teaching staff with behaviour management and keeping pupils on task, as well as supporting pupils with their social and emotional well-being, escalating where necessary.

The successful candidate will have previous experience of working or volunteering with young people in some capacity. The post is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain experience working with secondary age children and would be an ideal first step for someone considering a future career in teaching.

You will work 5.5 hours per day in this role (plus a daily 25-minute unpaid break), term time plus 5 days per year. 3 days will be for staff training days in September and January. The remaining 2 days will be for SEN review meetings and training and will be agreed in advance with your line manager.

The school uses Teaching Assistants to carry out Midday Supervision. This has been particularly successful in managing student behaviour and helps to build positive relationships with students. Successful applicants will also be required to work 45 minutes per day as a Midday Supervisor; a separate contract will be issued for each post.

Leading other TAs in supporting students

• Observation of support in lessons and interventions with a view to discussing strategy and types of support.
• Carry out appraisal observations and interviews as directed by the SENDCo.
• Leading Department discussions and planning on meeting the needs of students.
• Monitoring record keeping of all TAs who are working with students to include monitoring logs and attendance sheets.
• Contributing to and leading when appropriate Department INSET on matters, strategy, planning and administration.
• Organise the planning and delivery of Key Skills and small group lessons in conjunction with the relevant HOD and SENDCo

Liaise with relevant teaching staff over the needs of pupils

• Preparation of supporting data
• Attend the relevant year group meetings and prepare the minutes in conjunction with HOD.
• Ascertain information from teachers prior to EHCP reviews.

Supporting Students

• Support students with revision strategies and help to develop new methods and materials to aid revision.
• Liaise with outside agencies such as medical services and Careers services.

Meeting with SENDCo

• Attend regular meeting with SENDCo on a regular basis (ideally once a week) to support departmental planning

Support for pupils

• Supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to learning.

• Establish constructive relationships with pupils, acting as a role model, and interact with them according to individual needs.

• Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils in all situations.

• Supervise and provide particular support for pupils, including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities.

• Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher.

• Use specialist (curricular/learning) skills/training/experience to support pupils.

• Support pupils consistently whilst recognising and responding to their individual needs.

• Encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all pupils in activities

• Promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance.

• Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips, and out of school activities as required within the working day and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.

• Undertake planned support and interventions with pupils during and outside of lesson times, within the working day.

The School has an incredibly strong reputation in the area and is one of a very small number of state Schools that has retained close links to the Cathedral dating all the way back to 1541. The School is heavily oversubscribed, staff retention is very high, and staff will typically choose to send their own children to the school for their education. The appointed applicant will be part of a department that has high standards and achieves excellent results with their students. The Department benefits from a number of highly trained staff that includes experience working in primary schools, significant expertise in reading support and numeracy support and several of our staff hold mental health qualifications. We are part of the first cohort of the Peterborough Virtual School’s Connected Communities Project.

The School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities and we ensure our SEN students benefit from these. These include House Music competition, Year 7 and 9 residential trips, Duke of Edinburgh Award (Bronze and Gold), School drama performances, trips to France and Germany, sport, and attending activities week programmes. We often have SEN students in senior prefect roles in Year 13.

Actual starting salary (calculated pro rata): £18,279 per annum

Salaries are paid in 12 equal monthly instalments

We are looking to recruit a Learning Support Assistant (Reading Intervention) to provide reading intervention for students who require it at The St Leonards Academy. You will be based in our recently refurbished library space and work with targeted students delivering our programmes.
