Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required - Provide autonomous leadership, guidance and professional judgement in making challenging patient centred decisions in compliance with their respective code of conduct and within their scope of practice, being responsible and accountable for their decisions, actions and omissions at this level of practice. - Develops and maintains expertise in skills and competencies, to ensure highest level of precision to maintain patient safety in line with Trust and NMC/HCPC regulatory frameworks - Autonomously practice in Endoscopy having developed specialist clinical knowledge, and demonstrating a critical understanding of their broadened level of responsibility and autonomy, alongside the limits of their own competence and professional scope of practice - Use clinical expertise and decision-making skills to undertake advanced health assessment and clinical examinations, request relevant diagnostic investigations and make diagnoses and referrals for other specialist treatment using agreed protocols of clinical practice and professional guidelines. - Take responsibility for autonomous clinical decision making of as appropriate for the service. Manage a defined caseload that will focus on patients, including those with complex physical and/or mental health needs. - Undertake Non-Medical Prescribing role and provide advice on medicine management issues associated with the patient specialty group. Work within Trust policy for Medicines Management. - Act as an expert resource for the Trust and provide specialist advice when required - Lead the development of future clinical initiatives, including policies using specialist knowledge within the service/division, which promote collaborative working and deliver a high standard of clinical care for patients and their families. - Communicates very sensitive, complex condition related information to patients, relatives, where empathy and reassurance is required; presents specialist information to large groups of staff. - Report and raise concerns related to Safeguarding, accessing advice and support as required. Be conversant with Trust policies for safeguarding including the assessment of mental Capacity, and consideration of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS). Ensure that adult safeguarding procedures are adhered to within own practice - Ensure that high standards of all documentation are maintained, with accurate, complete and up-to-date information regarding patient care are kept in accordance with Trust standards. - Be a member of relevant Trust and Network committees and groups providing expert advice and contributing to the development of Nursing and Midwifery policy and strategy. Leadership and management - Provide highly visible and accessible professional leadership and demonstrate expert knowledge and standards of clinical practice. - Operationally line manage, mentor and support team of Clinical endoscopists with support from the senior management team. Provide senior managerial support and leadership to staff assigning responsibility for individual projects, providing day to day clinical support and overseeing staff deployment, balancing the workloads of individual team members. - Ensure that staff, within line management responsibility, are managed according to corporate policies and procedures, including recruitment, selection, induction performance review, setting objectives and personal development plans, mentoring, providing practical support and advice on day-to-day work, ensuring staff have access to appropriate training opportunities and undertaking disciplinary and grievance procedures as required. - Encourage teamwork that improves communication, understanding and performance. Maximise the skills and talents of team members and take appropriate steps to support their development. Lead by example by adopting a positive attitude towards their work, service users and colleagues. - Utilise well developed facilitation skills to effectively chair multidisciplinary meetings, leading on quality improvement projects utilising core project management skills, tracking progress and initiating actions required to sustain momentum and reach conclusions and sustainability within change programmes. - Demonstrate effective leadership skills, supporting the senior management team (General Manager / DDQN / DDDQN / Matron / Clinical Service Lead) in service development and lead as delegated on the implementation of any of these changes. - Support the maintenance of service KPIs, JAG and CQC compliance and local and national clinical governance initiatives in close collaboration with the directorate senior nursing, medical and management and in collaboration with clinical governance teams. - Maintain improvements in patient safety by supporting implementation of patient safety initiatives, prompt and appropriate response to complaints resolution and escalation where appropriate. - Proactively engage and lead on initiatives with patient / service users and groups to ensure that service delivery and development improves patient experience. - Work to develop new models of care in collaboration with the lead clinicians and service management, relating to DOH, NICE, NHS England, Specialist commissioning groups, regional and Trust objectives and guidance. - Participate in local and national policy or service changes that impact beyond own area / responsible for policy implementation as well as service development and has an excellent understanding of how the directorate directly impacts on other support services/directorates within the trust. Has an ability to engage and involve other key stakeholders affected by service change. Education and training - Participate in research informing the body of clinical and specialist knowledge in Endoscopy maximising the contributions of nurses and the wider interprofessional team. Collaborating as appropriate with relevant partners (clinical and academic). - Work towards shaping and delivering the multidisciplinary model of care, working with national best practice guidance and networking to develop effective services, and being a driver and advisor in the development of integrated pathways that put the patients at the centre of care delivery. - Promote the translation of research into practice. Critically appraise the outcomes of research, evaluation and audit, and apply them to improve practice. Act as an expert resource and demonstrate knowledge of current research in all aspects of the specialty. - Support the strategic aims of the trust research strategy as a collaborator, working with other clinical and academic researchers to identify and participate in research opportunities - Contribute to research publications and present developments and research findings locally, nationally and internationally. - Identify need for service development through audit/research, facilitate sharing/implementation of new ideas and concepts in working practice, overcoming barriers, and manage conflict and resistance to improve outcomes for patients / clients. Physical, Mental & Emotional Effort & Working Conditions Will frequently be expected to manoeuvre patients/objects, in concurrence with the Trust Manual Handling Policies The role will require considerable mental effort to engage with both patients, relatives and staff to understand situations, explore options for improvements and achieve positive outcomes Will have frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions and will be required to follow Policies and Procedures pertaining to bodily fluids, infection control and COSHH regulations. The post holder will work in a variety of settings and across site/Trust with unpredictable work patterns responding to the changing and challenging situations, which may expect prolonged periods of concentration Ability to work where the work pattern may be unpredictable, but there is also a requirement for concentration e.g., on call.
