Clinical 1. To work without direct supervision but under the supervision of the qualified staff in the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients as part of their treatment programmes. Duties may include: Activity of daily living assessments at the NHS base and in the community Independently evaluating and progressing patients occupational therapy treatment goals and care plans Delivering one to one or group based occupational therapy activity of daily living interventions Advising and educating patients on the importance of self care, leisure and lifestyle balance Supporting patients to find paid work voluntary work or training, or to stay in work Carrying your own caseload of non-complex patients including joint decisions on discharge Discharging patients on own caseload Providing education to patients, carers and ward staff Direct assistance to qualified staff with more complex patients Onward referral; signposting to external agencies and organisations 2. To deliver therapeutic interventions using highly skilled technical/creative techniques to engage service users in therapeutic activities. 3. Assist in the maintenance of a safe therapeutic environment beneficial to the needs of the service users, relatives carers and others 4. To provide individual meal support and meal preparation intervention to patients with an eating disorder. 5. To support patients with an eating disorder with relevant activities of daily living, such as shopping, planning and preparing food and going to a caf. 6. To be involved in the induction, training, development and supervision of students or assistants within the team 7. To write progress notes in a concise, accurate and timely manner in line with departmental standards. These notes do not require qualified staff to countersignature 8. To be aware at all times of the needs and risks of patients with eating disorders and to promote and encourage basic nutrition strategies 9. To undertake any non-clinical / clerical duties as necessary. This may include maintaining kitchen equipment, filing, dealing with telephone calls, arranging training, completing onward referrals. 10. Contribute to the team approach, providing accurate and relevant feedback to registered staff; participate in team discussions and meetings regarding care of service users. 11. To be actively involved in the communication of information regarding patients conditions and any other useful information to the multidisciplinary team 12. To communicate effectively with patients and carers. Communication skills of persuasion, motivations and explanation will be required. Barriers to communication may include loss of hearing, altered perception, pain and language disorders. 13. To be involved in the delivery, collection, cleaning and maintenance of occupational therapy equipment. 14. To complete delegated OT assessments. 15. To be responsible for an agreed caseload as required. 16. To demonstrate an understanding of occupational therapy and apply this using specific technical knowledge. 17. To assess risk and manage it effectively within clinical and community settings 18. Develop a therapeutic relationship with service users to encourage and maximise their interest and participation in therapeutic activity. 19. Organise day-to-day activities for groups and individual therapy programmes including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation under the supervision of the mental health professionals. Organisational 1. To work in accordance with the relevant Occupational Therapy codes of conduct. 2. To be aware of and comply with trust and departmental policies and procedures. 3. To be aware of the health and safety aspects of your work and abide by policies including the prompt recording and documentation of incidents and accidents. 4. Any other duties that may be considered appropriate by the qualified staff. 5. To participate in the appraisal process and follow a programme for CPD as drawn up in individual performance review. Skills / Knowledge 1. To actively participate in the trusts appraisal and personal development programme and have a positive approach to continual professional development. 2. The post-holder will demonstrate skills and knowledge beyond that of an occupational therapy assistant. These skills and knowledge will be gained through specific advances training, experience, formal qualifications or completion of competencies. 3. To be involved in the collection and inputting of statistical information for the Occupational Therapy team as required 4. To communicate effectively with other members of the multidisciplinary team and the Occupational Therapy Department, attending quarterly Team Meetings and other department team meetings as appropriate 5. To ensure that patients and carer are dealt with in a way that maintains their privacy and dignity and distressing issues are approached sensitively and professionally. Education & Health Promotion 1. To keep up to date with changing practices and attend relevant training appropriate to the role as directed. 2. Promote positive attitudes towards mental health. 3. Attend regular statutory and mandatory training and updates. 4. Participate in appraisal and supervision processes from identified Senior Practitioner. 5. To participate in the induction, training and education of students and other staff in this setting. 6. To participate in the dissemination and sharing of information and skills with staff, students and volunteers. 7. To provide training to staff and students on specialist technical/creative topics and skills as agreed with qualified OT. Finance and Workforce 1. To play a role in making best use of available workforce and material resources and contributing to provision of best therapy possible. Follow Trust and Service Policies relating to the security of the building/clients, to ensure safe practice and protection of clients, staff, visitors and members of the general public. 2. Play a part in the service provision that is both safe and therapeutic within span of knowledge. 3. To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance. Record Keeping and Administration To maintain standards of record keeping and associated administration in accordance with AWP Trust Policy and local joint arrangements and professional guidelines, this will include:- The upkeep of contemporaneous, chronological and accurate mental health records in accordance with relevant COT Guidelines and Trust Policy. To ensure timely recording of all data required by the Trust Service Development and Delivery 1. To take sole responsibility for maintaining and managing a designated area in accordance with health & safety. 2. Ensure that OT clinical environments are well maintained and comply with health and safety guidelines, including the safe use and storage of equipment and materials. 3. To participate in the delivery of the OT development plan 4. To participate in the planning reviewing and development of OT services within clinical area. Practice Development & Clinical Audit 1. As part of a team, incorporate up-to-date techniques and ideas of positive practice into your programme. 2. To participate in local/trust/national audit and research projects as applicable. 3. Abide by the Code of Ethics and professional conduct for Occupational Therapists. Communications and Working Relationships To form professional relationships with clients and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.
