At our Glenlyon estate being passionate about this beauty is easy however it will take a special kind of individual to fulfil the role of Head Gardener a newly created role you will be ‘The face and expert of Glenlyon Gardens’ creating exceptional and memorable experiences for all visiting this spectacular part of the country.
As part of this guest-facing role you will deliver tours and host garden talks and will be responsible for managing and maintaining the high standards across all estate gardens including Glenlyon House, the Farmhouse, McGregor’s Cottage and the surrounding estate grounds and landscape. Supporting when needed the wider gardening and landscape team across Taymouth Castle Golf and Sport Club.

As the Head Gardener at Glenlyon you will work closely in a hands-on role with the Glenlyon Operations Director and as part of a dedicated team to ensure that the Glenlyon Estate and gardens continue to exceed expectations and bring joy to visiting members and guests, whilst continually developing and implementing our long-term sustainable plan for the estate.
Overseeing the design and layout of the gardens and outdoor spaces ensuring they are attractive, yet functional and practical. Developing and implementing horticultural maintenance requirements - weeding, pruning, planting, annual seasonal bedding operations, pest and disease control, fertilising, watering and general grass cutting ensuring the gardens are kept in pristine condition.
Delivering garden maintenance work with the estate team to ensure the upkeep of garden structures, such as fences, trellises, composting, and other areas when required. Planting, propagation and cultivation of all plants, shrubs, trees and flowers in the garden and greenhouse, ensuring that they are healthy and thriving.
You assist with hard and soft landscaping projects including preparation of ground, paving, simple construction, grubbing out, planting including trees/shrubs and other general landscaping operations. While surveying, collecting, and maintaining accurate records of work such as planting schedules, maintenance records and inventory data. Updating the Operations Director on garden conditions, surrounding areas of the estate and environment supplementing with regular photography.
Managing and overseeing the Glenlyon gardens budget. Maintaining an inventory of all tools and equipment used for gardening and landscaping, ensuring that they are in good condition with parts or replacements ordered as required; faults, defects, risks and hazards reported.
Executing a safe working environment and culture by complying with health and safety throughout the gardens and areas of operation including the use of PPE (personal protective equipment), tools, machinery, fertilisers, chemicals ensuring safe working practices to protect health, safety for all who visit the estate. Maintaining up to date RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statements), COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and MDS (Model Development Specifications). Ensure that waste is managed in accordance with Scottish Waste Regulations.

To be successful you will have a knowledge and vision of horticulture and a genuine interest and knowledge.
You can maintain a professional and welcoming approach when engaging with members, guests & visitors. Excellent communication, influencing and interpersonal skills with a natural ability to build rapport and strong relationships while creating an enjoyable place to work. A full UK Driving License is essential, and the following qualifications would be a distinct advantage.
- NVQ level 3 or above horticultural qualification or equivalent.
- PA1, PA2 and PA6A spraying certificates.
- Full UK driving license - You will be required to travel between locations.
