Overview
Works under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager/Director depending on the facility organizational chart. This position performs routine and special laboratory specimen collections, handling and distributions according to established protocols and standard operating procedures assuring collection of the appropriate specimen in correct container with appropriate labeling. The position is also responsible for explaining specimen collection procedures and instructions to patients, nurses, physicians, etc. The Laboratory Support Tech I may also be responsible for traveling to other patient off-sight locations to collect blood and transporting of specimens back to the lab depending on work site assignment. • Collaborates with physicians to provide for the specialized needs of the surgical patient. Builds trusting collaborative relationship with surgeons to ensure optimal outcomes. Anticipates supply equipment needs in advance so that arrangements can be made in a timely and cost effective manner.
• Monitor and support personal and departmental needs to include flexing and shift changes to meet the needs of the department. Uses time in a productive manner.
• Demonstrates a surgical conscience by maintaining an aseptic environment during the surgical procedure and by recording breaks in technique per AORN Standards. Demonstrates consistent proficient knowledge of procedure specific utilization of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
• Responsible for assuring safe practices as referenced in the National Patient Safety Goals and by following RHS policies and procedures, as well as guidelines outlined in AORN, CMS, and DNV. Identifies and reports noncompliance or violations appropriately.
• Ensures preference cards are maintained and updated by consistently communicating changes to appropriate team members.
• Demonstrates the ability to build collaborative professional relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs.
• Participates and provides feedback in supply utilization, new equipment/product evaluations; identifying and recommending solutions for cost containment and waste reduction.
• Participates positively in training and support of all team members, volunteers and students.
• Actively supports and assists the perioperative registered nurse and team in the care of the patients. Demonstrates responsibility for accurate handling/management of specimens and surgical count. Demonstrates a sense of urgency to facilitate positive customer throughout the department/facility. Addresses customers' needs regardless of assignment.

• Program Graduate, Surgical Technology Program or equivalent (Required)

• 1 year Experience in surgical tech (Required)

• Surgical Technologist - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Upon Hire(Required)
• CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) (Required)
• Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (Required) or
• Tech in Surgery - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (Required)

• Safely transports patients using knowledge of Infection Control policies, proper body mechanics, and use of patient identifiers.

• Ensures proper supplies in transportation office to facilitate timely transports.
• Assists with obtaining supplies, specimens, and blood products requested and following appropriate procedure for transporting supplies.
• Demonstrates understanding of diverse patient care populations served within the community.

• High School Diploma or GED, (Preferred)

• 1 year Experience working with the public in a customer service capacity or related (Preferred)

• CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC)   Upon Hire(Preferred)
