As a Battery Energy Storage Consultant with Leidos Engineering, you will be responsible for the technical and commercial aspects of utility-scale and commercial & industrial (C&I) battery energy storage systems (“BESS”), client development, and BESS technology reviews.  You will collaborate in a team setting to support project managers and provide subject matter expertise in BESS technology, design, project execution, operation, and associated market applications to support independent engineering and owner’s advisory services for clients. You will support the managing of projects, develop sales proposals, and perform technology reviews. 

Location: Prefer Boston, MA or Denver, CO, however, remote work will also be considered.

In this role, you can expect to grow by:

• Increasing your already robust BESS industry knowledge by performing in-depth technical diligence on a variety of BESS integrators and technology suppliers
• Gaining exposure to all facets of BESS project development, execution, commercial operation, and financing

What sets you apart:

To be considered for the following levels:

• Junior – Mid Level: Bachelor’s degree in engineering required, with a minimum of two (2) + years of experience related to battery energy storage.  
• Mid - Senior Level: Bachelor’s degree in engineering required, with a minimum of four (4) + years of experience related to battery energy storage.  
• Lead Level: Bachelor’s degree in engineering required, with a minimum of eight (8) + years of experience related to battery energy storage.  

Required for all levels:

• Commercial or project experience with construction and O&M contracts and contractors for utility-scale and C&I battery storage projects.
• Understanding of battery and BESS market trends in technology, capital and operating costs, major suppliers, and market applications.
• Deep understanding of major components of BESS including battery cells, battery modules, battery racks, battery management systems, power conversion systems, thermal management concepts and designs, BESS safety features, industry certifications, energy management and control systems, and system integration considerations.
• An understanding of and familiarity with BESS performance requirements and guarantees including energy augmentation concepts required for supporting energy degradation guarantees.
• First principles understanding in battery degradation, and project-level useful life.
• Expertise in BESS performance modeling concepts.

You Might Also Have:

• MBA and/or advanced degree in engineering, finance, business, or related management area preferred.

Note:  This role may require as much as 10% travel, including international travel, and can periodically include weeks with extended work hours to support client(s) needs (can be typically 50-hour weeks).

Leidos Engineering has an opportunity for a Solar Team Manager with primary responsibility for managing and growing the current team of highly driven and self-motivated of engineers that are responsible for executing solar energy modeling and reviews of solar technologies.  The position also requires coordination with the BESS practice lead as well as colleagues across the Independent Engineering (IE) and Owner’s Advisory (OA) businesses during execution of solar due diligence reviews and project development support, respectively. 

Location: Ideal candidate would be located within commuting distance of Denver CO.

Travel: This position may require up to 15% travel to include international travel, and can include weeks with extended work hours to support client(s) needs

Primary Responsibilities:

• Thought leadership in the execution of energy modeling
• Thought leadership in reviews of solar technologies
• Provide workload balancing across the team
• Participation and leading technical calls with clients
• Provide coordination throughout the Independent Engineering and Owner Advisory businesses on solar projects
• Execution of energy models and reviews of technologies
• Working with project managers in developing scopes and budgets for new opportunities
• Business development
• Writing white papers

What Sets You Apart: (Basic Qualifications)

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering required with eight plus (8+) years in the solar energy modeling, engineering design, evaluations of technology, performance modeling/analysis/testing and/or operations and maintenance of PV facilities
• Understanding of PV modules and inverters, including first principles understanding of how the design, manufacture, quality control, and installations of these technologies impact PV plant performance and reliability in the short and long-term (this includes cell design and manufacturing techniques, standards, and quality control programs)
• Experience in and understanding of statistics
• Expertise in how performance is modeled with PVsyst.
• Understanding of market trends in technology and technology, installation, and O&M costs
• Understanding the similarities and differences in the design and modeling of residential, C&I, and utility-scale projects
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Ability to successfully meet deadlines under pressure (Clients will include private equity, infrastructure, and hedge funds, investment and commercial banks, private developers, legal and financial advisors, original equipment providers, and energy service companies)
• Successful track record maintaining client relations and working with clients (both internal and external)
