Head of Operations
Here at Menzies Distribution we currently have an opening for an experienced Head of Operations position. Menzies Distribution is a time-critical business, Delivering Supply Chain Solutions across Newstrade, Retail, eCommerce and more.
This role is a leadership role operating as part of the Senior Leadership Team in Warehouse & Associated Transport Division. The role holds accountability for all active areas of operation and customer relationships within the Business Unit. Responsible for the safety and welfare of the customer focused operations operated within FLT and ensuring that we operate within the relevant legislative frameworks at all time and are legally compliant for warehouse and vehicle operations as well as HSE legislation. Direct line responsibility for all activity that is undertaken for warehousing, associated transport, shunting where applicable, administration, invoicing and customer service. The role will champion Menzies and lead customer relationships supported by the Key Account Management function. The expected ownership of circa £45m revenue, £3m EBIT and expected ownership of circa 250 FTE.

• 33 Days Holiday Allowance (Inclusive of the 8 Bank Holidays)
• Monday to Friday - 45 Hours Per Week or to the needs of the business
• Location: We are flexible with the location
• Hybrid Role - Will be required to travel to the needs of the business
Key Duties and Accountabilities (Will include but not be limited to)
• Champion the safety agenda for all owned sites
• Champion the compliance agenda and ensure total priority and adherence
• Champion CSR agenda within business area
• Ensure adherence and compliance to agreed customer KPI levels
• Ensure adherence to agreed and signed off budget levels
• Create a strategy for delivery of specific corporate initiatives / goals as determined
• Work with Key Account Management function to deliver specific account goals such as Joint Business plan, POSI, account strategy for growth
• Champion Continuous improvement and ensure active programs
• Ensure Monthly Business Review’s take place with all customers
• Lead Quarterly Business Review’s with key customers
• Ensure All customers have relevant, consistent and timely KPI suites in place
• Monitor and ensure adherence to contractual obligations
• Reinvigorate staff engagement and maintain the new processes
• Support inter business unit working initiatives to improve overall business performance.
• Ensure seamless handover between planning and execution
• Complete regular 1 to 1’s with line reports
• Build a strong business partnering role with the Head of Key Account Management, Heads of Transport and General Managers in order to develop a constantly improving service and enhance business profitability.
• Seek to challenge the Operations team to achieve margin improvement. Understand the divisional profit drivers, review and evaluate divisional margin improvement initiatives.
• Develop excellent relationships with key customers in order to play an active role in discussions regarding business retention, account management and commercial negotiations. Support existing customer renewals
• Demonstrate a strong and fair approach to Debt Management, liaising between Credit Control and the customer
• Play a key role within the senior team
• Maintain clear lines of communication with the Business Unit Director and Functional leads
• Set clear goals and targets for direct reports through the PDR process, recognise good performance and professionally manage poor performance.
• Develop succession plans for key roles. Seek opportunities for self-development.
Key Experience and Qualifications:
• Working knowledge of Continuous Improvement
• IT literate
• Good knowledge of Health & Safety legislation (IOSHH / NEBOSH preferable)
• Commercial understanding
• Experienced Logistics professional, graduate or with relevant qualifications who will have previously operated at a senior level and preferably have managed a multi-site region
• Demonstrable experience of customer relationship management
• Proven capability of leading a function through significant change
• Experience of driving efficiency savings and business growth
• Good financial and business acumen with experience of managing budgets
• Good project management skills
• Excellent people management skills – driving accountability and delivering results through teams
• CPC Qualified desired.
