As a Biological Science Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assists in planning and execution of wildlife studies, censuses and surveys such as establishing schedules and procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work. Monitors and implement activities related to conservation, management, and/or control of wildlife. Captures, applies visual and radio tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on wildlife.
• Assists in planning plants surveys and recommends plant management practices. Monitors and assists in control plant disease outbreaks, pest plant control, mowing/seeding activities and vegetation removal.
• Collects, assesses, and organizes biological and physical environment data from field investigations and reports findings to determine actual and potential impact on fish, wildlife or plant resources from development projects, restoration projects or habitat improvement projects.
• Use automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of wildlife and/or botany reports. Analyze and summarize biological data using a variety of database software programs or other presentation approaches, ensuring records are detailed, precise and accurately transferred (e.g., terrestrial, geologic, geographic, hydrologic, ecologic, and environmental data).
• Assist in preparing news release drafts for area media, and/or presenting informational or educational programs to individuals, local organizations, and schools.
• Operates farm tractors, light trucks, vehicles, small water craft and various other equipment such as generators, radios, radio tracking equipment, water monitoring equipment, global positioning systems and cameras. Provides work direction and guidance to biological technicians and volunteers and YCC enrollees, including safe handling of tools and operation of motorized vehicles and watercraft. Collects physiological and demographic data on harvested game at hunter check stations.

About the role

This role is a full-time (35 hours per week) role on a fixed-term contract for 6 months. Based at the National Railway Museum in York.

As Archive Cataloguer you will create a searchable online catalogue of over 120 boxes worth of documentation, organise the digitisation selected items from the archive, making them available online. You will work with internal departments to preserve fragile digital and paper material and with Campaign for Better Transport to communicate the power of the archive to key stakeholders and interested communities.

About you

Senior Communications Manager

About the role

As Senior Communications Manager you will be leading the activity of the NRM and Locomotion communications team, with responsibility for delivering the communications strategy and achieving ambitious visitor numbers for both sites.

You will lead these teams in delivering engaging communications designed to celebrate a number of exciting events happening in 2025. These include the NRM's 50th birthday, the reopening of Station Hall and the bicentenary of the railways to be celebrated across both of our sites. In addition to these events, you will help to drive commercial return for our paid for offers and programmes including Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery and the Flying Scotsman VR Experience.

Your role will be essential in setting a culture of excellence and quality in all that we do and ensuring that internal comms are in line with expectations. You will work collaboratively with web and digital teams to align with museum objectives and messages to produce joined up comms campaigns across marketing, press, digital and social. You will use insight and data to continuously improve and evaluate all campaign outcomes.

About you

We are now recruiting for an ICT Security Officer on a permanent contract. This role is based at the National Railway Museum in York, on a full-time basis working 35 hours per week with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As ICT Security Officer your role will be instrumental in allowing SMG to continue to deliver on our mission. This is done by using security tools, writing policies, delivering training and using the knowledge and expertise within the team to influence decision making on creating a secure and accessible workplace. You will also contribute to compliance projects such as PCI DSS, Cyber Essentials and GovAssure.

This is an exciting role within an active and involved Information Security team, you will get the opportunity to work with a wide variety of business functions and aid in increasing the profile of Cybersecurity within the organisation through your relationships with the ICT Department and further.

You will be responsible for handling many of the regular projects that the team conducts, such as organising penetration testing and remediating vulnerabilities, producing, updating and delivering training as well as creating and delivering phishing simulations. This role will also take an active role in responding to security incidents, phishing, and malware in addition to assisting with daily alert monitoring.

About you

Joining us, you will have experience of supporting corporate IT environments, this includes devices such as network switches and firewalls, and systems such as Active Directory Domain Services. You will also have good attention to detail in addition to a knowledge of Cyber Security best practices and experience working on compliance projects.

Crucially, you will have the ability to work well in a team and you will be a good communicator able to engage with a wide range of people with varying levels of seniority. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Trust as a Research Project Manager for the ColoCap Trial.

You will join a national study team being established across the UK and will play a key role managing the study at NHS sites in England. This is an opportunity to get involved at the outset, inputting into the study set up and approval stages and subsequently delivering this ground-breaking trial over the next 3 years.

The post holder will additionally be responsible for the day-to-day management of other research projects, studies and trials at the Trust as required. The Project Manager must be able to provide initial advice, guidance, and support for researchers so candidates must already be familiar with the regulatory environment surrounding research in the NHS.

The post may therefore be varied, with opportunities for oversight of several concurrent research studies across a potentially clinically diverse field. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with previous trial/study management or coordination experience, who relishes a challenge, is keen to use their own initiative, and is flexible to the changing demands of research being able to prioritise competing workloads.

We are delighted to offer a Neuromodulation Research Fellowship at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This 1-year industry funded post is looking to further the development of expertise in, and a strong evidence base for, neuromodulation.



The ideal applicant must hold a UK CCT in Anaesthesia and pain medicine or equivalent.The successful candidate will gain the exposure, experience, and confidence to become an independent neuromodulator. The candidate will learn how a successful service with low explant rates and high patient satisfaction is run. Further, this role will give the candidate dedicated time to undertake, publish and present neuromodulation research.

The fellowship will have protected time for high quality supervised research that will align with both local and industry research priorities. Within the post, they will be expected to engage and deliver NIHR portfolio studies related to pain and neuromodulation. However, they will also be required to develop and deliver investigator initiated, industry funded studies that align with the strategic direction of both the funder and the neuromodulation service. This position presently joint funded by Saluda medical, Nevro & Mainstay medical will help fill the current void in well designed and conducted randomised controlled trials in this sphere. This aligns with the recent publications in major journals (JAMA) and discussion at international meetings (INS) calling for this direction. York and Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust has a strong history in delivering randomised controlled trials (both commercial & non-commercial) in the sphere of Anaesthesia, Pain, Perioperative medicine, and Intensive Care and has several active trials ongoing. We successfully deliver many NIHR portfolio trials across our trust, a number of which have been developed and sponsored by York and Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful applicant will be supported by both the University of York academically & Dr Armstrong and Dr Fitzmaurice clinically, & will be encouraged to attend & present their research regularly at major national & international meetings including NSUKI, BPS, INS, NANS and WIP

Film and Sound Archivist

We are now recruiting for a Film and Sound Archivist on a fixed-term contract for 7 months. This role is based at the National Railway Museum in York, on a full-time basis working 35 hours per week.

About the role

As Film and Sound Archivist you will document and process our sound and film material, making catalogue descriptions available via Collections Online and recordings via our reading rooms in Bradford, London, Manchester and York. You will work closely with Collections, Research and Curatorial colleagues across SMG on the intellectual development of the collections and processing new acquisitions.

You will respond to archive research enquiries about the sound and film archives, whilst also contributing to promotion and communications about the archives, such as via social media. You will also be supporting the Group Archives Manager to supervise volunteers to perform routine tasks such as listing, indexing and repackaging.

About you

Joining us, you will have experience of working in an archival role and with archives collections. You will have experience in audiovisual digitisation and preservation, and/or time-based media conservation.

You will have good accuracy and attention to detail alongside experience of working on cataloguing projects, following current professional archives practice and standards, including creating authority files. Crucially, you will have good IT skills including using an archive management system and Microsoft 365.

Collections Care Assistant

We are now recruiting for a Collections Care Assistant to join the team on a fixed-term contract until March 2025. This role is full-time, working 35 hours per week, on-site at the National Railway Museum in York.

About the role

As Collections Care Assistant you will work within our Collections Care team during this busy and exciting time for the museum. You will be involved in a wide variety of conservation and collections care activities including assisting with environmental monitoring and conservation cleaning of the collections.

You will assist in the condition reporting, care, data management and recording, assist with the changeover of exhibitions, cleaning and packing of objects from the collection stores and on gallery.

You will work closely with the other members of the Conservation & Collections Care team, supporting the work of the Conservation team, and more widely the work of the Documentation, Registration, Photography and Curatorial teams.

You will undertake conservation object cleaning of collection items where appropriate. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.

About you

Joining us you will have good knowledge or practical experience of working with historic collections coupled with an understanding of collections care, particularly object handling. You will have good communication skills which will enable you to work well as part of a team.

You will be able to work well under pressure and use prioritising skills to meet deadlines calmly and effectively. Crucially you will have the ability to work to a high standard of accuracy with good attention to detail.

What you’ll be doing:

• Deliver scientific excellence in accordance with ISO17025 and ISO9001 quality accredited procedures.
• Work from Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to identify and diagnose pathogens and pests, using a range of methods including, but not limited to, microscopy, ELISA and PCR.
• Data entry and validation
• Carry out general laboratory duties e.g. glassware washing, cleaning and tidying
• Complete laboratory documentation with test results.
• Help to clean and maintain facilities and equipment.
• Have the opportunity to assist other teams throughout the programme

What we’re looking for:

• Ideally, qualifications in a science subject, preferably a biology discipline or equivalent experience
• Experience of working in a laboratory is desirable, but not essential and we can teach you!
• A methodical approach to work and attention to detail is key.
• The ability to follow written and verbal instructions efficiently within regulated environments.
• Practical IT experience, in particular Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to keep clear written records.

You will work hybrid with Wednesday and Thursday on-site at the Railway Museum in York, and the remainder of the week at home.
