About the role
As Conservation Project Manager you will bring together project management skills, specialist conservation and collections care expertise, problem solving, and team leadership skills to deliver collections projects at NCC. More information about NCC can be found below.

Reporting to the Group Conservation Manager, you will work collaboratively and proactively with other Project Managers and departments to enable the Conservation team to deliver Masterplan and Collections Services projects. This includes ensuring that conservation and collection care elements are correctly scoped and resourced and that conservation budgets are managed accordingly.

You will manage and matrix manage conservators across several projects. Using your conservation specialist knowledge of materials and practices, you will help your team plan works and review processes to ensure they are fit for purpose, making decisions to improve efficiencies and ways of working.

Full time (35 hours), Fixed term contract until Dec 2025 - Hybrid working from Wroughton Office.
Offering £40,133 per annum

There may be the possibility of the extension for this role depending on the Science Museum Group work programme.

About you
You will have solid experience of conservation project management with the ability to analyse, forward plan, coordinate and manage people. From this, you have the ability to find innovative conservation solutions to complex problems, and to define and report on key performance indicators, key dependencies and milestones and risk.

With great people and negotiation skills, you can maintain a strong reputation for delivery whist effectively engaging with senior stakeholders, and acting as a successful, and trusted ambassador for your team.

About the National Collections Centre
This position is based at the National Collections Centre, at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton within the Collection Services Department.

The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. The National Collections Centre is transforming how we care, manage, and make accessible over 400,000 objects and 1.5M items in our Library and Archive. As the Conservation and Collections Care team we are responsible for the physical care of the objects in the Science Museum Group collections which span science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

We are recruiting for a Conservation Scientist to join our team based at the NCC at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week on a fixed-term contract until December 2025, with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As Collections Scientist, you will be working on a Collections Review project to create a better understanding of the collections we hold through in-depth reviews of selected parts of the collection. The focus for this role will be to support the review team on a review of specific hazards within SMG's Collection, such as radiation and synthetic dyes.

Bringing your knowledge and expertise of chemical science and adapting it to collections, you will research our collections and provide recommendations on the management these hazardous collections and where required advise and feed into the removal of hazardous objects. You will work alongside external consultants and internal colleagues to review our ways of working, including our policies, standard operating procedures and risk assessments, and ensure our processes are practical and safe, ensuring that any changes are agreed, communicated and implemented.

About you

Joining us, you will be able to carry out scientific analysis using a range of equipment questioning and interpreting results, for example, portable XRF, FTIR and Raman, Alphaguard Mini Rad, Smartlon and Selectra. You will bring experience in updating spectral libraries and will have experience working with and researching a range of hazardous materials.

You will be an effective communicator with a proven ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders, subject specialists and external consultants or contactors, as well as collaborate as part of a team.

Documentation Officer

The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. The NCC is transforming how we care, manage, and make accessible over 400,000 objects and 1.5M items in our Library and Archive.

Working within the Documentation team offers an exciting opportunity to work with collections data for one of the world's preeminent science, technology, transport, medicine & media collections.

We are now recruiting for a Documentation Officer based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time (35 hours per week), fixed-term contract until September 2026, with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As Documentation Officer you will have a group-wide reach, working with diverse collections data across the organisation. As well as championing our cataloguing and documentation standards, ensuring that data is consistent and accurate, you will also use your data skills to support the Conservation team in building and improving the information we hold and share about our collections.

You will be working on a project: Empowering Safety: Hazardous Materials Awareness, Identification and Management. This project aims to develop a comprehensive hazardous materials library and dataset, that can be shared with the wider sector, both to raise awareness and increase research and understanding, including around safe and practical management. Ultimately helping to increase access and knowledge of these fascinating but hazardous collections.

You will play a crucial role in ensuring high quality data is generated and maintained. You will use innovative techniques to record and improve collections data. Alongside this you will be responsible for improving data in our Collections Information Systems. You will feed into recommendations on taxonomy and how this data could best be recorded and shared.

About you

Joining us you will have some experience of museum documentation and cataloguing, in addition to an interest in developing data management skills. You will possess a good level of attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures consistently and accurately.

Crucially, you will have experience of handling museum collections, including an awareness of basic collections care. You will have good IT skills, data skills and the ability to work with a Collections Management System as well as a knowledge of museum documentation standards.

Archive Cataloguer

The Science Museum Group (SMG) archive and library collection contains around 7 million items and is of outstanding national and international significance. This is an exciting time for SMG's Archives and Libraries with our new strategy setting out how our collections will be the best in the world in our fields. We are committed to documenting our collections, making them available to more people than ever before and transforming customer service.

To fulfil our ambitions to catalogue our archive collections we are now recruiting for an Archive Cataloguer on a permanent contract based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week.

About the role

This role will concentrate on cataloguing our archives, working closely with curatorial teams to prioritise work in line with the Science Museum Group's plans. The focus and much of the work will be on box listing or creating collection level descriptions for the entirety of the archives, with regular time spent on detailed cataloguing of prioritised archives.

You will be managed by the Curatorial team at based at the NCC but will work closely with the Group Archives Manager to ensure consistency and to meet KPIs. While most of the time will be spent on cataloguing activity, you will sometimes be expected to support access to researchers by assisting with enquiries, contributing to promotional activities, and providing cover for reading room supervision.

About you

Joining us, you will have relevant experience with Archives or Records Management and experience handling, storing and documenting archive collections. You will be able to embrace our commitment to making archive collections accessible to diverse audiences.

Crucially, you will be organised with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively with the ability to complete tasks with accuracy and a good level of attention to detail. You will also be an effective communicator, able to communicate confidently to a variety of internal and external stakeholders and provide good customer service.
