• Leads investigations of the molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions, particularly for economically significant bacterial and/or viral diseases in small grain cereals.
• Works independently but coordinates research activities with other ARS scientists in the unit, as well as with pathologists and geneticists at North Dakota State University and elsewhere as part of a regional cooperative research program.
• Improves small grain cereals performance and to develop basic information on plant diseases and their control.
• Provides basic knowledge that will facilitate understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying virulence and pathogenicity, and ultimately to use this knowledge to improve disease resistance in cereal crop.

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our interdisciplinary team addressing critical issues in mental health using AI technologies. This role involves contributing to a groundbreaking project aimed at developing AI-driven tools for mental health support, with a focus on detecting and treating mental health disorders and distress through digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist in the development and refinement of algorithms designed to detect social communication patterns and signs of mental distress.
• Participate in the design and testing of AI models, including data collection, preprocessing, and analysis.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to integrate AI tools into social media and messaging apps to offer real-time mental health support.
• Help conduct empirical research, including designing studies, recruiting participants, and managing experimental data.
• Contribute to the development of empathetic conversational support systems facilitated by human-AI interactions.
• Support the team in writing research proposals, progress reports, and academic papers.
• Engage actively with project stakeholders to facilitate the adoption and implementation of research findings.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
• Strong interest in mental health research and AI technologies.
• Experience in research methods and statistical analysis, preferably with exposure to machine learning or natural language processing.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently.
• Prior experience in handling sensitive data and ethical considerations in mental health research is advantageous.

• We seek out for a researcher with a PhD in Physics or similar. In particular the candidate is expected to have a strong back ground in many-body quantum physics with extensive experience in tensor networks and neural network quantum states.
• The researcher will work on developing the numerical approaches and apply them to areas such as quantum thermodynamics, many-body quantum systems out of equilibrium and biology.
• High competence in parallel programming and GPU programming is preferred.
