Financial Reporting Accountant

About us

The Science Museum Group (SMG) is an exciting organisation at the boundary of the private, public and charitable sectors, with a fascinating variety of reporting challenges. The finance team is based across the Group's six sites, with ambitious plans for improvement in financial reporting.

We are now recruiting for a Financial Reporting Accountant on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. This role is full-time, working 35 hours per week and can be based either at the Science Museum in London or the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As Financial Reporting Accountant you will help to deliver important parts of our plan to shorten our reporting cycle, improve our control environment and increase the value of our financial data to a range of stakeholders.

You will focus on ensuring that the data required to automate the majority of our record to report cycle is available within our finance system, TechnologyOne, and that our processes are system-driven and repeatable. You will look at transactions across our Statements of Comprehensive Income and Financial Position (P&L and balance sheet), including those related to the fixed assets in our physical estate, fund accounting and other museum activities.

You will have the opportunity to think about how we can be as efficient as possible in using our existing data sources, whether owned by finance or by other departments, to produce a range of financial reporting outputs such as our group's statutory accounts (under the Charities SORP and Companies Act), our consolidation pack for Government (under IFRS) and other statistical returns.

About you

Joining us you will have a relevant accounting or financial qualification e.g. ACA, CIMA, CIPFA in addition to good technical knowledge of current accounting standards. You will have significant experience of reporting and auditing processes with an interest in future developments in these areas.

Crucially, you will have a proactive approach to making processes efficient with a commitment to increasing the use of automation in finance tasks. You will be a good communicator with the ability to plan and deliver pieces of work, setting clear expectations for others and yourself.

Wimbledon College has a strong tradition of success in Science and offers a broad range of opportunities to study Science both in timetabled lessons and an extensive extra curriculum programme of events, visits and clubs. The school is also an Associate School of the Royal Society and regularly participates in its education events.

Science at the College is a popular choice for students and we have two sets of A-level classes for all three sciences and in addition Science BTEC is also offered. In Years 7 and 8 teachers teach all three sciences but by Year 9 an increasing number of lessons are taught by specialists in the relevant science. In Year 10 onwards teachers for the most part teach in their specialism(s).

About the role

As Prospect Development Manager you will work to identify new target donor audiences and embed a proactive prospect development strategy that delivers strong, long-term pipelines across our museums and income streams. As well as identifying high-quality prospects and delivering well researched prospect intelligence, you will build and work in partnership with fundraisers to maximise the value of their pipelines.

You will also work alongside the rest of Fundraising Operations to drive a data-driven way of working, using our CRM database and analytics platform to ensure that all opportunities are maximised. Furthermore, you will manage a Prospect Development Executive and work collaboratively to support fundraising across all SMG Museums.

Along with prospect research tasks, you may also be working on more collaborative pieces such as exploring the prospect potential for upcoming capital projects like the build of a new gallery space, large event biography documents for annual dinner events or the creation of a new report or process to support the wider Department.

About you

Joining us, you will have experience of working in a fundraising team in a prospect research capacity, in addition to a good understanding of the pivotal role research plays in prospect management, cultivation and stewardship. You will have good research skills with the ability to work with a CRM database and experience of collating and analysing complex information.

Crucially, you will be a good communicator with the ability to collaborate with others, build good working relationships and deliver complex information in a clear way to a variety of audiences. You will be able to manage your time and prioritise tasks effectively in order to meet deadlines and manage competing demands.

We currently have a vacancy for a dynamic, motivated administrator to work in the busy Cardiology Research Department within the newBarts Heart Centre.We are the biggest cardiovascular centre in Europe and have a growing portfolio of interventional research for cardiac patients. The post is for a one year fixed term contract position in the first instance with possibility of extension.



The primary responsibility for this post holder is support the delivery of our research portfolio as well as to assist with the every day tasks of the department. The post holder will be based within the cardiology research department at the Barts Heart centre. You might be required to cover multiple sites within the trust.



You will be an enthusiastic individual who is willing to learn an array of new skills and is passionate about research and patient care, with a background in administration within the healthcare setting. You must demonstrate organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, be computer literate, flexible and be able to manage your own time effectively.Excellent time management and IT skills are essential to the role.

The post holder will be expected to provide a full administrative support within the research team; and, as such, have a working knowledge of all studies within the department, with focus on supporting the department’s administrative needs, study protocol and patient flow.The role will include the registration of new patients for the service, handling queries (e.g. from patients and GPs), arranging appointments/correspondence and supporting the team to make the flow of the patients’ pathway as smooth as possible. Main duties will be maintaining files (both paper and electronic) as well as ensuring each step of the patient’s pathway is accurately documented in the appropriate data capture systems in a timely manner. The role will also involve coordination R&D applications and maintenance of database of trial activity. The post holder will support the activities of Research Delivery Managers to assist with the implementation and conduct of trials and maintenance of high quality work and training.
