The Division of Psychology, housed within the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, are seeking to appoint two exceptional individuals with strong track records of research and research-led teaching. As part of our strategic growth initiative, these posts will build our capacity to deliver world-leading teaching and research, strengthening our existing areas of research excellence and support the expansion of our teaching programmes. We invite applications from any area of psychology. However, we particularly welcome applications from candidates with research expertise in health (e.g., mental health, behaviour change, health inequalities, or other), cognitive psychology, or social psychology (with experience of qualitative social psychology methods).

The successful candidates should be able to articulate a clear research strategy, outlining how they will significantly enhance our research, attract external funding, and foster interdisciplinary links across the wider university. The successful candidates will also apply their academic passions to the delivery of excellent and innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The candidates would participate in the design and delivery of Psychology modules, taking an active role in the delivery of our successful undergraduate Psychology programme as well as our expanding taught postgraduate portfolio.

Purpose of the Post

• Contribute to the research activities of Psychology, ideally in one of our key thematic areas.
• Support the full economic cost of research by generating research grant income (e.g., UKRI).
• Supervise research students, and support applicants in their funding applications, if appropriate.
• Develop appropriate opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange with other academic, industrial partners, and/or third sector partners.
• Contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate modules in both theoretical and practical settings.
• Use innovative teaching methods to deliver high-quality and effective teaching at all levels to equip students with the skills, attributes, and experiences required for their future careers.
• Supervise research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, ensuring that each student receives an outstanding research training experience.
• Perform a range of administrative tasks within psychology and provide academic, as well as pastoral, support to students.
• Display excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability, and willingness to work collaboratively with others and to be an effective team member.
• Maintain a personal development programme as agreed with academic line manager.

Person Specification Essential

• PhD in Psychology, or a relevant subject.
• An established research profile and the ability to produce research outputs of internationally excellent quality suitable for UK REF submission.
• Evidence of clear research objectives and the ability to generate external funding for research projects that will enhance Division and School research.

We are looking for candidates with a strong track record in teaching and research, with a clear plan that articulates with and enhances our existing activities in the Centre for Medical Engineering & Technology, which is an interdisciplinary academic space between the School of Medicine and the School of Science & Engineering.

Candidates' research plans should align with one or more of the following areas: Biomedical Imaging & Image-Guided Intervention, Cardiovascular Engineering, Medical Instrumentation & Robotics. The successful candidate will contribute to our teaching of Biomedical Engineering to the Joint Education Partnership with North-Eastern University, China.

Your priorities will include:

• To carry out teaching and supervision at undergraduate or postgraduate level, including contributing to curriculum design and enhancement of the student learning experience. A commitment to international travel is required for this post; it is expected that there will be one or two trips to China each year, each of which will be between two and four weeks duration
• To publish research outputs that meet the highest standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour
• To develop appropriate opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange with other academic or industrial partners

We are seeking an individual with strong software development skills and a passion for research to join the Jalview (www.jalview.org) development team and help advance the state-of-the-art in biomolecular alignment visualisation and analysis.

Jalview is a mature platform launched nearly a million times a year by students and researchers worldwide for visualisation and interactive analysis of biological sequence (DNA, RNA, Protein) and 3D structure data. Available as a native Java application and web-based JavaScript component, it allows easy access to a range of public databases and analysis services and interoperates with leading 3D structure tools. Recent developments include interoperation with PyMol and UCSF ChimeraX, and integrated support for discovery and visualisation of AlphaFold structural models.

Currently funded by the UK's Wellcome Trust, the Jalview team work in partnership with the Dundee Resource for Sequence Analysis and Structure Prediction to maintain and improve services provided to Jalview users. Over the next 5 years we aim to introduce a range of new functionality, including integration with Jupyter Notebooks, interoperation with stand-alone and web-based genome browsers and tight integration with a range of databases and services provided by EMBL-EBI.

If you'd like to join us, you need to demonstrate proficiency in Java (or another object-oriented programming language), and be familiar with at least one other language (e.g. Python and JavaScript). Experience applying critical software engineering practices (version control, documentation, code review, build systems, tests, debuggers) and working with legacy codebases will be an advantage. You should also have good written, visual, oral, and online communication skills.
