Documentation Officer

About us

The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. The NCC is transforming how we care, manage, and make accessible over 400,000 objects and 1.5M items in our Library and Archive.

Working within the Documentation team offers an exciting opportunity to work with collections data for one of the world's preeminent science, technology, transport, medicine & media collections.

We are now recruiting for a Documentation Officer based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time (35 hours per week), fixed-term contract until September 2026, with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As Documentation Officer you will have a group-wide reach, working with diverse collections data across the organisation. As well as championing our cataloguing and documentation standards, ensuring that data is consistent and accurate, you will also use your data skills to support the Conservation team in building and improving the information we hold and share about our collections.

You will be working on a project: Empowering Safety: Hazardous Materials Awareness, Identification and Management. This project aims to develop a comprehensive hazardous materials library and dataset, that can be shared with the wider sector, both to raise awareness and increase research and understanding, including around safe and practical management. Ultimately helping to increase access and knowledge of these fascinating but hazardous collections.

You will play a crucial role in ensuring high quality data is generated and maintained. You will use innovative techniques to record and improve collections data. Alongside this you will be responsible for improving data in our Collections Information Systems. You will feed into recommendations on taxonomy and how this data could best be recorded and shared.

About you

Joining us you will have some experience of museum documentation and cataloguing, in addition to an interest in developing data management skills. You will possess a good level of attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures consistently and accurately.

Crucially, you will have experience of handling museum collections, including an awareness of basic collections care. You will have good IT skills, data skills and the ability to work with a Collections Management System as well as a knowledge of museum documentation standards.

About us

The Science Museum Group (SMG) archive and library collection contains around 7 million items and is of outstanding national and international significance. This is an exciting time for SMG's Archives and Libraries with our new strategy setting out how our collections will be the best in the world in our fields. We are committed to documenting our collections, making them available to more people than ever before and transforming customer service.

To fulfil our ambitions to catalogue our archive collections we are now recruiting for an Archive Cataloguer on a permanent contract based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week.

About the role

This role will concentrate on cataloguing our archives, working closely with curatorial teams to prioritise work in line with the Science Museum Group's plans. The focus and much of the work will be on box listing or creating collection level descriptions for the entirety of the archives, with regular time spent on detailed cataloguing of prioritised archives.

You will be managed by the Curatorial team at based at the NCC but will work closely with the Group Archives Manager to ensure consistency and to meet KPIs. While most of the time will be spent on cataloguing activity, you will sometimes be expected to support access to researchers by assisting with enquiries, contributing to promotional activities, and providing cover for reading room supervision.

About you

Joining us, you will have relevant experience with Archives or Records Management and experience handling, storing and documenting archive collections. You will be able to embrace our commitment to making archive collections accessible to diverse audiences.

Crucially, you will be organised with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively with the ability to complete tasks with accuracy and a good level of attention to detail. This Post will be based at the Wythenshawe Campus. MFT is one of the biggest, most ambitious, and progressive NHS Trusts in the country. We are responsible for running a family of nine hospitals across six separate sites, providing a wide range of services.

We are looking for a team player who is flexible and self-motivated to enhance our Aseptic Services Team. You will have a professional outlook and able to demonstrate excellent organisational and communication skills.

This is an apprenticeship and candidates will be given 1 day a week to attend college lectures, either in person or remotely to work towards aLevel 3 Diploma in the Principles of Aseptic Pharmaceuticals Processing over 2 years. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be qualified as a Science Manufacturing Technician, eligible to register with the Science Council and be employed as a permanent band 4 Science Manufacturing Technician in the Aseptic Services Team.

This role will include 1 in 4 Saturday working as part of a rota and Bank Holiday working as part of a rota at the Oxford Road Campus. Posts will be based at either the Oxford Road Campus or Wythenshawe with the possibility of cross site working at each site.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
• The ability to work accurately and methodically
• Effectively under pressure and have an excellent eye for detail
• Working to your own initiative to meet deadlines
• Committed to deliver a high standard in patient focused service.

You will have responsibility for assisting the Senior Technical Team in the day-to-day management and development of the Aseptic Services Unit Cytotoxic, PN and CIVA Service within MFT.

To carry out aseptic preparation including parenteral nutrition, CIVA, cytotoxic drugs, gene therapy and monoclonal antibodies from point of prescription receipt including accurately measuring volumes, following departmental procedures.

You will be responsible for the transfer disinfection into the aseptic units all items required for aseptic process.

To assist the Senior Technical Team – Aseptic Services in planning, organising and managing the workload in accordance with the capacity plan, ensuring adequate numbers of appropriately trained staff are available to perform tasks required for a given activity level and feeding back information to Senior managers when breaches and constraints occur, following departmental processes.

About us

The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. As the Conservation and Collections Care team we are responsible for the physical care of the objects in the Science Museum Group collections which span science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

We are recruiting for a Group Conservation Scientist to join our team based at the NCC at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week on a permanent contract with hybrid working also available.

About the role

You will be working on a project that aims to develop a comprehensive hazardous materials library and dataset, that can be shared with the wider sector, both to raise awareness and increase research and understanding, including around safe and practical management.

Bringing your knowledge and expertise of chemical science and adapting it to collections, you will research our collections and be responsible for designing effective processes for the management of hazardous collections and sharing that knowledge both internally and externally. You will review our ways of working, including our policies, standard operating procedures and risk assessments, ensuring our processes are practical and safe and that any changes are communicated and implemented.

You will also set up and roll out processes for efficiently using our scientific equipment across the Group. There will be potential for line management responsibilities, and you will matrix manage as the projects require.

About you
Joining us you will have substantial experience of scientific analysis using a range of equipment, in addition to experience working with a range of hazardous materials and implementing risk management approaches.

Crucially, you will be able to assess complex situations and generate solutions and you will have the ability to apply your scientific expertise to cultural collection material and ensure practical advice and work is fit for purpose.

You will have experience of writing standard operating procedures and presenting and publishing research. This role will also require you to use effective leadership, influencing and communication skills, to work effectively with internal stakeholders, subject specialists and external consultants or contactors.
