About the role
Nottingham City Council has an ambition to become an effective research partner and research active organisation, embedding evidence in all decision making. In order to achieve this, we will need to develop a systematic approach for guiding colleagues, provide training and support on finding and applying evidence to inform decisions and processes, and develop research infrastructure including governance, to support research proposals and their delivery. We are looking for a colleague who is passionate about evidence informed practice to lead on this developmental workstream, and to join a national network of research practitioners supported by the NIHR Research Support Service Specialist Centre for Public Health (SCPH) working to embed research across local authorities by sharing best practice and protocols. If you have applied research experience, particularly within a large organisation, we would love to hear from you.

Key objectives of the role will include:
- supporting networking and influencing senior colleagues across the Council to promote the value of research and evidence to inform practice
- delivering research awareness and knowledge mobilisation activities
- facilitating and providing training on finding and using evidence
- assessing Council’s research readiness (including skills and capacity audit) and identifying development needs with regards to research culture, collaboration, dissemination and infrastructure
- supporting development of research infrastructure/processes
- facilitating networking (across all Council’s directorates responsible for functions related to wider health determinants) for colleagues interested in research and enabling access to relevant guidance, support and training
- promoting, supporting and contributing to the activity of the Specialist Centre for Public Health (SCPH)

• About you
  The ideal candidate will have:
  . Knowledge, skills and experience in a broad range of applied research and evaluation methods applicable to public health including wider determinants of health.
  - Knowledge of research funding systems, application processes and governance
  - Understanding of the challenges in translating evidence into practice and experience of facilitating this
  - The ability to influence and engage with senior leaders and Nottingham City Council teams
  - Experience in designing and delivering training and knowledge mobilisation activities related to research and finding and using evidence to inform practice
  - Project management skills and experience
  - The ability to lead, motivate, mobilise and build capacity in others
  - Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to present complex issues clearly and in an engaging manner to a range of audiences, both professional and public
  - Experience of working well against a background of change and uncertainty, can work with people of all capabilities and attitudes

The role will be based within our Public Health Knowledge and Intelligence team but will work across all Council’s directorates responsible for functions related to wider health determinants.

A new role of research ophthalmic science practitioner has been created within ophthalmology to coordinate and support the research trials requiring input from our services. This is a really exciting opportunity to work between ophthalmology and research and innovation teams, to facilitate the set-up of research studies in a timely fashion, ensure patients enrolled in trials have visits in line with the study protocol and work collaboratively across the teams.

Research & Innovation (R&I) receives and generates funding from various routes, in order to support and foster clinical research in Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and in partnership with regional stakeholders. As part of the research support infrastructure, the Ophthalmology department plays an integral role in facilitating R&I to carry out this function. Consequently, NUH R&I is enabling the development of this role. The post holder will be based in ophthalmology and must be flexible to meet the needs of the service. Excellent communication, organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently to prescribed timelines are essential skills required for the role.

Administer, co-ordinate and manage the collection of data relating to ongoing clinical studies in the DREEAM portfolio and assist with recruitment into other studies when required. Screen, identify, recruit and follow-up appropriate patients for clinical studies. Demonstrate excellence and professionalism in all modes of communication: in writing, in person, via telephone and using new media. Carry out and/or monitor all trial-related and other clinical care procedures for research participants to the highest safety standards. Demonstrate keyboard, word processing and database skills, adapting to the required needs of specialist and trial-specific systems. Perform trial and other procedures competently and in accordance with local Trust policies e.g. ECG, sample processing, pregnancy testing, venepuncture, I.V cannulation. Ensure that the processing and storage of biological samples meets the necessary requirements of the research protocol in order to ensure safe handling and quality. Take responsibility for seeking consent from patients and relatives and/or provide support to medical colleagues in doing so. The post holder will be a key member of the Neurology Clinical Research team. They will assist in the management, co-ordination and facilitation of clinical trial activities to support delivery of current and future studies in the research team to time and target. They will provide specialist research and clinical care for participants and patients enrolling in a variety of research studies and project.

This post is open to highly motivated health care professionals with research experience in the clinical environment.

The post-holder will be required to work flexibly over a five day week.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on urgent and high priority studies in a wide variety of clinical environments and alongside clinical experts in order to deliver the highest quality experience for patients in research trials within the Trust.

The post holder will be responsible for the running of complex clinical trials both commercial and non-commercial, as well as other types of clinical research in the Trust. You will need knowledge of clinical research studies in the clinical setting and exposure to research conducted in the NHS (on wards / theatres / outpatients etc.). Experience of liaising with and maintaining good working relationships with other health professionals across all clinical disciplines at all levels is essential.

The role may involve completing and submitting documents to obtain local approval; collecting, recording and maintaining data for patients on the NIHR portfolio and other studies, providing guidance to other clinical, administrative and research staff, ensuring & organising research tests and investigations, preparing and shipping samples, and ensuring recruitment into clinical trials meets all targets. The role involves acquiring an in-depth knowledge of trial protocols and their application in practice, research methodology and the requirements of local, national and international research regulations.

The post holder will be working independently and with a wider team, work across both sites (QMC & NCH). Full support and training will be provided by to the post holder.

Clinical
Assist research nurses/ACP’s/Clinicians in delivery of patient care to research participants.
Support and co-ordinate obtaining and processing of blood and tissue samples in the clinical setting as well as optimising recruitment via clinics and MDT’s.
Work alongside research nurses ensuring samples are collected and recorded per protocol.
Review and record treatments, adverse events and response to treatment to relevant study documentation including source data and case report forms including electronic data entry.
Plan, prepare and participate in monitoring visits and respond to trial data queries.
Communication
To function as a member of the Research and Innovation Clinical Trials Team to provide dedicated clinical trials support to research teams across NUH. Working within a multidisciplinary team, to co-ordinate a caseload of patients participating in local, national and
international clinical trials in various treatment types.
Disseminate information to consultants regarding new trials on the National Institute of
Health Research trial portfolio as well as non-adopted clinical trials, to enable optimal patient recruitment.
Ensure ethics and R&D approval and indemnities are in place before recruitment of first patients to a newly set up trial.
Liaise with clinical teams to organise and ensure that trial specific investigations are undertaken as and when required, obtain the results, ensure eligibility and randomise the
patient.
Liaise with medical staff to record organise and ensure the timely administration of treatment
and any necessary follow up investigations and visits.
Liaise with histopathology ensuring tissue samples are stored via Tissue Bank guidelines, organising storage and catalogue of samples kept.
To ensure effective communication with support departments to request and obtain specific
trial related information. E.g. Radiology copy scans, histological status and tissue samples.
Organise the collection, storage and shipment of protocol specific samples. Explain, dispense and collect patient quality of life questionnaires and diaries. Liaise with designated
