Senior Laboratory Research Scientist

We have an opportunity for a talented, experienced, and motivated Senior Laboratory Research Scientist in the Proteomics Scientific Technology Platform at the Francis Crick Institute. The post holder will help us provide a world class platform to contribute towards key research in collaboration with the wider Crick scientific community. This is a lab-based position, responsible for driving forward qualitative and quantitative proteomic and clinical proteomic projects, from experimental design through sample preparation to data analysis.

The Proteomics STP houses a broad range of mass spectrometers including a Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid with FAIMS and ETD, Exploris 480, Q Exactive UHMR, Bruker timsTOF Ultra and Pro2, Waters Select Cyclic and SYNAPT G2Si HDMS. The role will involve setting up new experiments as collaborative projects arise using the available mass spectrometry technologies to both qualitatively and quantitatively measure proteins.

Key Responsibilities
These include but are not limited to:

• Planning of experiments, decision making about which pipeline to take, and independently executing experiments for projects.
• Performing both standard and bespoke proteomics experiments starting with sample preparation from a variety of biological sources using common biochemical methodologies for cell lysis, SDS-PAGE, in-gel, in-solution, TCA and acetone precipitation digest protocols, TMT labelling, high pH chromatographic fractionation and label free quantification.
• LC-MS/MS nanoUHPLC data acquisition, evaluation, and processing of raw data.
• Communication of results in collaboration.

Other typical activities may include:

• Collaborating with other lab members on/Assisting other lab members with/ research projects.
• Providing experimental or technical support to other lab members.
• Providing technical expertise/ input for the development, refinement and troubleshooting of novel methodologies.
• Participating in academic activities, including group meetings and journal clubs, seminars

The successful applicant will be working with international neuromuscular expert physiotherapists and physicians within the Clinical Neuromuscular Physiotherapy Team at GOSH to ensure best clinical care and research practice and will furthermore collaborate closely with the ICH Neuromuscular Research Team and the Clinical Research Facility Team. We have an active and growing paediatric research unit based within a new, dedicated and purpose-built Children’s Clinical Research Facility (CCRF), which opened in 2018. We employ over 18 research nurses and clinical research practitioners with a portfolio of over 20 research studies currently in the delivery stage. Over recent years, the department has seen a significant expansion of clinical research.

We currently have an opportunity to provide maternity leave cover for one of our existing research nurses. The post will suit an enthusiastic, organised and motivated individual to join us as a Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse, on the CCRF at St Mary’s Hospital. Hours will be full time (37.3hrs) and the post will be funded for 12 months in the first instance. The successful applicant will join a first class team delivering ongoing, ground-breaking paediatric research studies, particularly in the field of children's allergy.

This role involves working closely with medical and nursing staff along with research participants and their families. Central to the role is the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients participating in our allergy clinical research studies. Human Biology (HB) is a Science and Technology Platform investigating the biological mechanisms that underpin key consumer phenotypes leading to the generation of new technologies for the next generation of personal care products and providing novel insights to support superior claims in the marketplace.

A UL Bioscience Hub has been established at Kings College London, with UL scientists based at Guys Campus. The main purpose of this Hub is to enable UL scientists to work alongside globally recognised experts in the Bioscience field, allowing access to world leading scientific expertise and technical capability.

An opportunity has arisen in the S&T Human Biology team for a PhD-qualified scientist to join our team at Kings College London, reporting to the Bioscience Hub leader & senior scientist for a 12-month maternity cover contract. The role is ideally suited to a self-motivated, resourceful research scientist with ability to work on their own initiative and with strong people and communication skills. A background in immunology is essential with a knowledge of skin biology highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Programme support: As part of the HB S&T programme, provide immunology expertise to support all project workstreams. Undertake lab-based research to identify new insights, targets & technology for relevant categories.
• External networks and resources: Leverage the best of both academia and industry, including assessing and working with independent service providers, to support the development of new technologies. Contribute to building the new KCL Hub and establishing an effective scouting network within the University.
• Science capability build: Support internal efforts to build knowledge and expertise in the area of skin immunology. Actively evaluate new science capabilities, establish relevant capabilities into practice and assist in alignment with relevant UL programmes.
• Business relationships: Build and maintain effective working relationships with project teams in Human Biology, Human Microbiome and business category stakeholders in UL.
• People/Skills Development: Be proactive, self-motivated, with ability to work on their own initiative and with strong communication skills, for delivering the immunology focussed Human Biology agenda and exploiting the opportunities of the KCL hub.

ALL ABOUT YOU

• A degree in a biological based subject is essential. A PhD, or equivalent experience, with a strong emphasis in human immunology is preferred. Experience of skin biology/immunology would be ideal, or other host-microbial interface such as hair and oral mucosa.
• Proven ability to handle primary cells, particularly immune cells, is preferred. Experience of co-culture systems, 3D models, histological analysis of immune biomarkers, and experience of managing tissue in accordance with the UK Human Tissue Act would be an added advantage.
• Omic measurements (e.g. RNAseq, proteomics etc) of cells and/or tissues and bioinformatic analyses thereof using R and/or other software platforms is desirable. Knowledge of single cell and/or spatial transcriptomic techniques is an added advantage.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external partners for new technology development, as well as initiating new partnerships
• Ability to effectively balance multiple concurrent activities and deliver to established deadlines.
• A strong interest in translational research and industrial R&D; the direct experience of delivering a research agenda in an industrial setting would be an added advantage.
• Fluent spoken and written English.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Clinical Research Nurse or Practitioner, to join our CCRF team at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. This post would suit enthusiastic individuals who are eager to get involved with delivering clinical research to children and their families throughout children’s services at Imperial but with a focus on Paediatric emergency care.

The successful applicant will be part of a first class team delivering ongoing paediatric clinical research studies. What skills and experience we're looking for

There is a vacancy for a committed and dynamic Teacher in Charge of Science to teach the Science Curriculum at Francis Barber PRU in Wandsworth. You will be co-ordinating the GCSE Biology and KS3 Science delivery across both sites of the PRU to students. In addition you will also hold the role of keyworker to a small group of students and will be responsible for monitoring their progress and well-being.

What the school offers its staff

Francis Barber works with groups of secondary aged pupils who have found education challenging in mainstream schools or who have moved into the borough and are awaiting a school place.

This post is based across both sites of the Francis Barber PRU in central Wandsworth and in Tooting.

We are a very good PRU and have very high expectations for our pupils. There is a friendly and welcoming ethos and a variety of activities both during the day and after school. These, along with good keyworking, help young people make changes which enable them to be successful in their education.

Many of the pupils have faced challenges in mainstream schools. Some continue to be challenging in the PRU, but there is a strong staff team helping the young people to manage their behaviour within a supportive and caring school-like environment.

Staff at Francis Barber are committed to creating a reflective and considerate community where pupils can learn in a safe and secure environment. We value the individual strengths which pupils and staff can equally contribute to the development of positive and co-operative relationships.
