Somerset Studio School is a unique and small specialist Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics school with students' pastoral care, educational needs and personal future aspirations at its very heart. We have a small team of 20 staff and just 137 students on roll, aged 14 to 19 years and we serve the communities of Radstock, Frome, Midsomer Norton and surrounding villages.
Somerset Studio School needs a very particular kind of staff. As with all educators, they need to have a heartfelt commitment to challenging and supporting students to be the best they can be - however; they also need to be committed to 14 to 19 Education with an emphasis on developing young peoples’ skills through a predominantly applied learning curriculum, ready for employment. For example, at Sixth Form we offer Healthcare Science, Education and Engineering T Levels - full time level 3 courses with work placements, worth three A Levels, developing the workforce of the future, whilst securing outstanding life chances for our students.
Working in this relatively small school environment, staff need to be resilient, adaptable and to exhibit high levels of emotional literacy and initiative. These skills and attributes are key to all of this - a strong community bound by professional behaviours, particularly honesty and self-reflection. Principal Accountabilities and StandardsLead and manage Health and Safety for the Science Department
Keep up to date with external legislation and internal policy, ensuring adherence at all times
Ensure laboratories are equipped/stocked to meet the needs of the department
Maintain laboratories and equipment in good clean working order
Procure and develop resources that enhance and enthuse learning
Equip classrooms with teaching resource ready for use in lessons
Assist with practical demonstrations in lessons
Working positively with students, within the expectations of the school’s mission
Maintain a well organised, tidy and user friendly environment
Develop systems to manage resources efficiently
Procure best value for money resources
Provide administrative and technical support to the department
Maintain accurate and precise records
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Support in the auditing, resourcing and implementation of T Levels in Healthcare Science and/or Science
Maintain H&S compliance for equipment, chemicals and consumables: identifying hazards, developing and applying risk assessments
Managing the process of the BANES H&S audit for the department
Implement safe working procedures to meet all internal policy and external legislation
