About You

An exciting opportunity has arisen at CCCG for a Science Technician to work as a member of the team providing technical support and expertise to the science and engineering department at our Kings Cross Centre.

About the Role:

To work as a member of a team providing chemistry and physics technical support and expertise of Criminal, Forensic, Medical and General Sciences on the L2/L3 Applied Science, Medical Science and Criminal and Forensic science Programmes.

* Preparing equipment, materials and set up equipment and other resources for practical classes with a focus on Physics and Chemistry. Retrieving and clearing up equipment, materials etc. General maintenance (including cleaning) of equipment and basic maintenance of general laboratory services and facilities. Ordering the consumables supplies and keeping the appropriate records in line with the college financial guidelines and procedures.
* Provide in class support during practical lessons when requested and advise staff on the use of equipment.
* Responsible for the organisation, maintenance, servicing and storage of equipment, materials used in science practicals.
* Assisting in the maintenance of specialist resources typically found in laboratories as well as stationary supplies for teaching staff.
* Ensuring the health and safety of staff, students and visitors to the workshops and laboratories and disposing of workshop hazardous waste as per legal guidelines.
* Participating in the selection of equipment and in the development of the departments' facilities and liaising with suppliers.

About you:

You will be/have -

* Qualified to at least Level 5 or equivalent in a relevant chemistry/physics discipline.
* Experience of preparing materials and laboratories for biology/chemistry and physics experiments in an educational environment.
* Knowledge of equipment to support with chemistry and physic experiments.
* Knowledge of health and safety and risk assessments in an education environment
* Ability to work as a member of a team in a teaching environment.
* Ability to support teaching staff during practical lessons.

MAIN TASKS Within the context of the College's commitment to providing quality education for all, you will be a crucial member of the curriculum team as a technician coach. You will be supporting a range of practical activities within the curriculum and managing specialist areas, lab and inventory assigned, ensuring stock and equipment is maintained As a coach you will also be required to provide coaching and cover by facilitating sessions, to support learner progress and achievement. JOB ACTIVITIES o To promote the highest possible standards in customer care, equal opportunities and health and safety practices for the benefit of learners and the wider community served by the College. o To liaise with Managers to facilitate efficient delivery of the planned curriculum o To support teaching staff and to provide maximum cover for the support of the delivery of a flexible curriculum. o To ensure practical areas are prepared for classes, including machinery, equipment and commodities/consumables are available as required. o To issue equipment and commodities/consumables to teaching staff for practical classes, ensuring they are maintained and returned in good order o To ensure workshops are set up and left in a clean, safe and compliant manner. Addressing teaching staff and learners to ensure this is met, informing the senior technician or management of any concerns. o To ensure that Health & Safety policy is adhered to at all times and to ensure that hygienic and safe standards are maintained at all times. MAIN DUTIES o Ability to use a wide range of complex/sensitive equipment within the health and science labs requiring a high standard of technical expertise. o Ability to organise own workload & work with minimum supervision. o Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, including drawings and sketches where appropriate. o Preparation of equipment for practical classwork and demonstrations. When requested, assist staff and students in the use of equipment and help with demonstrations. Allow students access to work areas as requested by course tutors. o Recording and the issuing of equipment to students and staff. o Construction of non-standard equipment and modification of existing equipment on request commensurate with the level of the post/course. o Clean, service, carry out routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, monitor the condition of equipment and bring any faults or defects to the attention of the relevant person o Provide first line maintenance and support for specialist equipment. Identify major repairs to be undertaken by outside agencies in liaison with the Deputy Head/Head/Director o Monitor and keep records of stock levels of equipment and materials, advise on future requirements and participate in annual stock take. Research and conduct orders for equipment and materials liaising with the Deputy Head/Head/ Director o Assist in the loading/unloading of delivery vehicles and safe storage of goods. o Responsible for maintaining satisfactory standards of cleanliness, security and safety within designated area(s) and ensuring that all relevant Health and Safety regulations are complied with. Participate in the preparation of all H&S Assessments within the Service/Area. o Support curriculum delivery team through practical demonstrations and student assessment work. Assist and advise staff and students on technical aspects of projects, equipment and materials. o Participate in the development of new facilities. o To work with the Curriculum and Health & Safety Manager in the preparation of Risk Assessments. o To contribute to and support the self-assessment review of area, and learner feedback to help inform changes and quality improvement needs o To participate in stock checks when requested by Line Manager. o To enter orders onto the College finance system if appropriate. o To have a care for College resources and to follow established procedures in the use of materials, equipment etc. o Continue to develop own skills by gaining further experience and technical expertise through staff development training. o Attend and actively participate in relevant Faculty and Course Team meetings. o Assist with changes to college accommodation as directed and in accordance with the skills of the post holder. o To undertake other duties as directed by the relevant Deputy Head/Head/Director commensurate with the level of this post.
