The SymBioSys Lab (www.simbiosyslab.com) is seeking an independent and creative postdoctoral associate to support research on computational modeling of complex protein-glycan intereactions in the broad field of glycoprotein-based therapeutic design. Strong background and experience with applications of machine learning (especially Explainable Artificial Intelligence – XAI) is required. The available position is in the Chemical Engineering Department of Northeastern University (Boston Campus). • Establish ML and XAI based models explaining structural aspects of biomolecular systems

About our lab: The overarching goal in our laboratory is to develop novel computer-driven solutions to glycoprotein-based biomedical challenges. Two independent thrusts targeting viral vaccine engineering and biomaterial design form the current research focus. This is a cross-disciplinary group at the interface of Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics and Computer Science. All research is expected to occur in association with other experimental collaborators (both intra- and extramural).

Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral, and written. Strong background and experience with applications of machine learning (especially Explainable Artificial Intelligence – XAI) is required. Summary

The School of Architecture in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University seeks applications for the 2024-25 Design Research and Teaching Fellowship, a one-year visiting appointment that provides emerging scholars, practitioners, and advocates of the built environment with the opportunity to develop a body of design research based on a specific area of interest while contributing to the vibrant intellectual culture of the school. The position is a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor and is scheduled to commence in August, 2024.

The fellowship supports teaching related to the candidate’s area of interest, as well as modest resources for the development of independent research and creative work. Fellows will have the opportunity to design new curricula for studio and seminar courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as to teach within the School of Architecture’s core curriculum. They will be provided with opportunities to share their ongoing fellowship work with the wider Northeastern community through lectures, presentations, and exhibitions throughout the academic year. In particular, fellows are invited to engage and collaborate with the diverse faculty body within the School of Architecture, across the College of Arts, Media and Design, and with other colleges and centers across the University. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds, training, and perspectives are encouraged to apply for this position.

Responsibilities

The teaching responsibilities of the fellowship include three courses taught during the 2024-25 academic year. At least one of the courses will take the form of a research-centric design studio that builds directly on the Fellow’s research project, and provides a way for them to draw connections between their teaching, research, and creative practice. Other courses include design studios, research seminars or representation courses within the School of Architecture’s core curriculum where the Fellow’s unique perspective on the built environment will contribute towards the existing strengths of the department on areas such as sustainable design, urban ecologies, collective housing, public health, and material experimentation.  

As the culmination of the fellowship year, the Fellow will be invited to deliver a lecture as part of the School of Architecture’s public lecture series and/or to prepare an exhibition or other event that showcases the research, teaching, and/or creative work that they conducted while in residence at the school.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (PhD, Master’s, or equivalent) in their proposed area of research by the appointment start date. Applicants with prior studio teaching experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Specialization may be in any area of Africana Studies in disciplines of social sciences or humanities, with a clear commitment to feminist interdisciplinary work. We welcome textual, theoretical, and/or empirical projects in any field or period that engage questions at the intersection of Africana Studies and feminism, gender, and sexuality. Research proposals should involve substantive theoretical engagement within Africana Studies and feminist/gender studies; the strongest proposals will include a project component and will embrace an intersectional approach that reckons with gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. Scholars working in Black feminist or African diasporic women's histories, Black queer studies, or the digital humanities are strongly preferred.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will have access to a mentor and have one writing workshop presentation and session with faculty from across the university. Recent hires in Africana Studies at Northeastern have resulted in a strong community of Black feminist scholars in the fields of history, anthropology, and literary studies making this an especially exciting moment for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Black Feminist Studies.  

Areas of particular interest in the Northeastern context include the transmission, circulation, and organization of social movements for gender and sexual equity; sexual and racial communities, cultures, and markets, particularly as these are inflected by digital culture; digital humanities theory and practice; expressive uses of media in the construction of gendered and raced subjectivities; feminist approaches to digital representational practices and systems.

Responsibilities:

The fellowship offers the successful candidate a unique platform for professional advancement: financial and material support for independent research; the ability to develop substantive interdisciplinary teaching expertise; and the opportunity to play an instrumental role in nurturing the growing digital humanities community at Northeastern University. The fellowship includes a stipend of $60,000, health insurance, office space, mentoring, and clerical support, in addition to $5000 per annum for research and travel expenses.

This fellowship combines research and teaching and is designed to support fellows in developing both their teaching skills and their research programs.  We expect:

Postdoctoral fellows will present their work to the Africana Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Public History communities and will teach cross-listed courses in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Public History programs. One course will be the Introduction to Africana Studies class or another undergraduate course that will attract a broad audience. In addition, fellows will be encouraged to participate in the Northeastern Humanities Center seminar series as well as the Northeastern community at large where the themes of racial and social justice are of particular interest in this critical moment.

Qualifications:

• Applicants should have received their PhD in a relevant field between May 2020 and May 2024 and have college or university teaching experience.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Northeastern University Research Enterprise Services (NU-RES) Director of Research Operations and Systems and with support of senior level NU-RES team members, the Data Quality and Research Administration Analytics Manager (“Data Manager”) is responsible for developing and executing local data governance strategies, managing data quality, building and driving digital initiatives that support the research enterprise, and improving the analytical value of data related to the university’s research enterprise.  They will focus on client engagement and internal operational efficiencies to implement data governance policies, procedures, processes, and standards and work with a variety of university partners to identify opportunities to improve data quality across the university’s global research network. 

The Data Manager is responsible for information system management and best practice standards to improve data quality across NU-RES applications (e.g., eCD eCLAWs ePAWs), which includes analyzing data collection workstreams, creating processes and procedures, recommending new policies, and monitoring the collection and storage of NU-RES data; they will work closely with the NU-RES Director of Research Operations and Systems and eRA Systems Manager on implementing NU-RES’s digital strategy through evaluation of enterprise data standards, technology, and processes.

The Data Manager is responsible for educating and training end-users on sound data quality standards and internal control practices, fostering a culture of quality client service; assessing and interpreting data in support of operational excellence and data-driven decision making by senior leadership.

The Data Manager will evaluate how digital governance of research data impacts data quality and will work to maximize the value of analytics and innovation to transform the university’s data reporting capabilities, while encouraging the adoption of contemporary methods, practices, and measurement outcomes, producing consistent and accurate information.

Research in the Liao laboratory combines single-molecule imaging, genetic manipulation, whole-cell super-resolution microscopy, machine learning, and physical modeling to understand how neuron structures and functions emerge from the elementary molecular processes, under both normal development and pathological stresses. 

The Associate Research Scientist will conduct leading-edge research in understanding the elusive connection between microtubule organization/dynamics and neurological diseases. They will also investigate the processes that control the interaction between microtubules and actin in the context of neuronal development.
